Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing cost and scarcity of durable boatbuilding timbers have affected the construction of fishing craft around the world. The developed world has by and large witnessed the transfer from traditional wooden boatbuilding methods to either less conventional wood construction techniques (e.g., plywood or wood laminates) or non-wood materials such as fibre reinforced plastic (FRP), steel, aluminium and ferrocement. These techniques generally favour less labour intensive methods of construction. In the developing world where timber is still the predominant boatbuilding material, the scarcity and high cost of good quality timber have not meant that less wooden boats are being built, but rather that building quality has deteriorated through the use of poor quality timber. At the same time, however, attempts have been made to diversify construction methods with varying degrees of success. This publication is intended to benefit those who are considering ferrocement construction; it is assumed that those who use the book are already conversant in small fishing vessel construction.

They would leave their home on the eastern coast of Australia, sail to India, around Africa, and over to the United States where they spend a few months visiting relatives before returning through the Panama Canal to their home. But the crew, a lousy engine, foul weather, and other perils of the sea jeopardize the voyage. Will they survive a cyclone at sea? Or an oncoming oil tanker? Will Pierre-Paul, the bully of the crew, destroy everything on board? How will Cheryl go to school? Will they have enough food and water? Can they avoid pirates? Will they make it back to AustraliaExperience the adventure as they explore a deserted island, escape a harbor at midnight, resort to eating peanut butter and onion sandwiches, and much more. "Around the World in a Cement Boat" is a true story of adventure on the high seas told by one who lived the adventure.

Rabl's concise instructions overflow with expert advice that will simplify the job and make your boat build a success "About the Author The son of a shipyard supervisor in Chesapeake Bay, Sam S. Book excerpt: Buying a 42' ferro-cement boat for £1500 and what started as a retort to a wind-up led to the adventure of a lifetime. RYA Yachtmaster Max Liberson had been drawn to the sea all his life, but it was the chance acquisition of a yacht that apparently only he could see the potential of that allowed him to fulfil a dream. What followed was a true story of ingenuity, persistence and more anecdotal tales of woe than most sailors would want to admit to as their own. For anyone aiming to make a similar voyage, the story goes into detail of his plans beforehand and the many pitfalls and triumphs he encountered on his 9-month round trip from Battlesbridge in Essex over to the Carribean.

Book excerpt: What begins as the sheer desire for adventure turns into a spiritual quest as a young woman comes to terms with her family, her dreams, and her first love. Tania Aebi was an unambitious eighteen-year-old, a bicycle messenger in New York City by day, a Lower East Side barfly at night. In short, she was going nowhere—until her father offered her a challenge: Tania could choose either a college education or a twenty-six-foot sloop. The only catch was that if she chose the sailboat, she’d have to sail around the world—alone. She chose the boat, and for the next two and a half years and 27,000 miles, it was her home. With only her cat as companion, she discovered the wondrous beauties of the Great Barrier Reef and the death-dealing horrors of the Red Sea. She suffered through a terrifying collision with a tanker in the Mediterranean and a lightning storm off the coast of Gibraltar. And, ultimately, what began with the sheer desire for adventure turned into a spiritual quest as Tania came to terms with her troubled family life, fell in love for the first time, and—most of all—confronted her own needs, desires, dreams, and goals…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic examination of superb design through the centuries. Widely regarded as a classic in the field, Experiencing Architecture explores the history and promise of good design. Generously illustrated with historical examples of designing excellence—ranging from teacups, riding boots, and golf balls to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of Beijing's Winter Palace—Rasmussen's accessible guide invites us to appreciate architecture not only as a profession, but as an art that shapes everyday experience. In the past, Rasmussen argues, architecture was not just an individual pursuit, but a community undertaking. Dwellings were built with a natural feeling for place, materials and use, resulting in “a remarkably suitable comeliness.” While we cannot return to a former age, Rasmussen notes, we can still design spaces that are beautiful and useful by seeking to understand architecture as an art form that must be experienced. An understanding of good design comes not only from one's professional experience of architecture as an abstract, individual pursuit, but also from one's shared, everyday experience of architecture in real time—its particular use of light, color, shape, scale, texture, rhythm and sound. Experiencing Architecture reminds us of what good architectural design has accomplished over time, what it can accomplish still, and why it is worth pursuing. Wide-ranging and approachable, it is for anyone who has ever wondered “what instrument the architect plays on.”

By the end of the day, he finds himself the owner of a thirty-seven-foot ketch called Sea Mouse. Although he's never really been on the ocean before (aside from the odd ferry-ride), he feels compelled to sail to Tahiti and back, to burn away his failings in hard miles at sea.
