Book excerpt: This is the never-before-told story of George Orwell's first wife, Eileen, a woman who shaped, supported, and even saved the life of one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. In 1934, Eileen O'Shaughnessy's futuristic poem, 'End of the Century, 1984', was published. The next year, she would meet George Orwell, then known as Eric Blair, at a party. 'Now that is the kind of girl I would like to marry!' he remarked that night. Years later, Orwell would name his greatest work, Nineteen Eighty-Four, in homage to the memory of Eileen, the woman who shaped his life and his art in ways that have never been acknowledged by history, until now. From the time they spent in a tiny village tending goats and chickens, through the Spanish Civil War, to the couple's narrow escape from the destruction of their London flat during a German bombing raid, and their adoption of a baby boy, Eileen is the first account of the Blairs' nine-year marriage. It is also a vivid picture of bohemianism, political engagement, and sexual freedom in the 1930s and '40s. Through impressive depth of research, illustrated throughout with photos and images from the time, this captivating and inspiring biography offers a completely new perspective on Orwell himself, and most importantly tells the life story of an exceptional woman who has been unjustly overlooked.

Book excerpt: Spurred by ideals of individual liberty that took hold in the Western world in the late nineteenth century, psychiatrists and public officials sought to reinvent asylums as large-scale, totally designed institutions that offered a level of freedom and normality impossible in the outside world. This volume explores the “caged freedom” that this new psychiatric ethos represented by analyzing seven such buildings established in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy between the late 1890s and World War I. In the last two decades of the Habsburg Empire, architects of asylums began to abandon traditional corridor-based plans in favor of looser formations of connected villas, echoing through design the urban- and freedom-oriented impulse of the progressive architecture of the time. Leslie Topp considers the paradoxical position of designs that promoted an illusion of freedom even as they exercised careful social and spatial control over patients. In addition to discussing the physical and social aspects of these institutions, Topp shows how the commissioned buildings were symptomatic of larger cultural changes and of the modern asylum’s straining against its ideological anchorage in a premodern past of “unenlightened” restraint on human liberty. Working at the intersection of the history of architecture and the history of psychiatry, Freedom and the Cage broadens our understanding of the complexity and fluidity of modern architecture’s engagement with the state, with social and medical projects, and with mental health, psychiatry, and psychology.

Book excerpt: Nigel Molesworth, the curse of St. Custard's school, is known to his huge army of fans through Geoffrey Willans' four books Down with Skool!, How to be Topp, Whizz for Atomms and Back in the Jug Agane, first published between 1953 and 1958, and illustrated by Ronald Searle. Much less famous are the Molesworth diaries that appeared in the magazine Punch between August 1939 and December 1942. This volume is an opportunity to discover a slightly different Molesworth - less philosophical than the boy portrayed in the books, but equally as sardonic, knowing and cynical. The diaries are an introduction to the world and mind of Molesworth, and as such are essential reading for Molesworth fans - all of whom are, of course, "conoisuers of prose and luvers of literature".

Book excerpt: 'To put yourself at the mercy of something as awe-inspiring as the ocean is to accept your place in the world.' Surfing is a seductive mistress, providing inspiration, a time for reflection, personal challenge and sheer exhilaration. this is especially true in NZ, where we have an affinity with the sea, and a disproportionately high number of artists, writers and musicians surf. Aaron topp, himself a surfer, explores this close relationship, and the role surfing and the sea plays in the creative lives of a selection of leading musicians, painters, sculptors, poets and fellow writers. In a series of perceptive and revealing personal profiles, he discovers that, as we suspected, while surfers may function in normal society, in reality they're a few steps removed. Putting yourself at the mercy of something as awe-inspiring as the ocean is to accept your place in the world, and while there's great risk and skill required, at the same time the rewards are such that these children of the sea do it again and again as it becomes their sanctuary, a time to meditate free of constraint. Profiles include SurfAid founder Dr Dave Jenkins, film directors Damon Meade, Andrew Forrester and Andrew McAlpine, carvers Jess Santorik and Aaron Kereopa, sculptor Nick toa, musicians Fran Kora and Ian King, photographers Daisy Day and Craig Levers and artists Justin Summerton, Ben Galbraith, Ken thomas, tony Ogle, Daryn McBride and many others, providing a fascinating cross-section of contemporary artists.

Book excerpt: A soldier's experiences in times of war are as varied and filled with impact as the cause he or she fights to defend. The collection of soldier memories in Letters from Lee: One Man's Story of Vietnam are those of one man, Lee Heckman, who took up arms during the Vietnam War. It's been more than 40 years since Lee Heckman was called upon to fight that war. Although he has spent the years since in a peace-filled Nebraska town, his nights have been anything but. The effects of posttraumatic stress disorder have brought the war back to him in waves as deep as the South China Sea, couched in dreaded nightmares, panic attacks and flashbacks. The letters from Lee contained in this book were written to a girlfriend back home during the days of a young man's life when all he longed for were a fast car, a girl on his arm and a cold beer. These dreams were crushed by an Army ticket to a tropical country in Southeast Asia. Lee's letters, written from the viewpoint of an H-13 Loach helicopter during the terror of war, are mix with Heckman's memories in a look back at the war from a perspective of four decades. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or can't locate Vietnam on a world map, you'll find Letters from Lee to be a sometimes irreverent but always honest story of Vietnam.
