Book Synopsis All That Glisters and Other Stories by : Pat Lynch
Download or read book All That Glisters and Other Stories written by Pat Lynch and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pat Lynch's work, with its astute social consciousness and reporter's sharp eye, tunes us in: to language with its revelations and betrayals, to subtexts, to nuance, to irony. Her characters engage us emotionally; her stories peel away the layers with humor and great humanity. Lynch is funny the way that Lear's fool is funny: she tells the truth. She is (as the teenage Dustin Blake would say in "Hand-Me-Downs") a "hella good" writer. -Susan Kelly-DeWitt, author of The Fortunate Islands Pat Lynch's work is a pleasure, especially if we define pleasure as delivering a world and a sensibility toward it that always rings true. Her most interesting characters are outsiders, people who find ways to live (and sometimes prevail) both inside and on the margins of society. She has a fine ear for their language, and a complicated sympathy for the situations she places them in. -Stephen Dunn, author of nineteen books of poetry and prose, including Different Hours, winner of the Pulitzer Prize
Book Synopsis The Great Portrait Mystery and Other Stories by : R. Austin Freeman
Download or read book The Great Portrait Mystery and Other Stories written by R. Austin Freeman and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Portrait Mystery and Other Stories" is a crime mystery novel by the famed author of the Thorndyke mystery novels, R. Austin Freeman. Joseph Fittleworth is a painter, with a leaning to the methods of the past rather than to those of the future, a fact that often diminished the chances of his success. Hence it had happened that Fittleworth had accepted with avidity a not very lucrative supernumerary post at the National Gallery where he could, at least, have his being amidst the objects of his worship, which included an exceedingly comely young lady, who came regularly to the gallery to copy pictures, principally of the Flemish school. But this mundane experience will all change one fateful morning when he helps a man carry a painting out of the museum, a mistake he would live to regret...
Book Synopsis Tomato Cain and Other Stories by : Nigel Kneale
Download or read book Tomato Cain and Other Stories written by Nigel Kneale and published by Comma Press. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1949, Tomato Cain and Other Stories is the sole collection of short fiction by Nigel Kneale. Drawing on his experiences of growing up on the Isle of Man, many of Kneale's tales conjure up a remote, old-fashioned community where mythology and superstition are part of everyday life. Several stories go further, making imaginative leaps into the kind of weird, eerie territory with which Kneale would go on to make his name, as the writer of TV's Quatermass, The Road, Beasts and The Stone Tape. Though garlanded with praise on publication – it won its author the 1950 Somerset Maugham Award – Tomato Cain has long since been out of print. In the face of a steady groundswell of interest, this new edition, published by Comma Press to mark the centenary of Kneale's birth, makes the collection available again at last, uniting the stories from both the original UK and US editions for the first time ever. It's sure to delight Kneale's legions of fans and indeed all admirers of skilfully-crafted short stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Gilligan's smart and funny illustrated middle grade series stars Doug, King of the Mole People, who struggles to balance chaos both in school and in the underworld. "The Wimpy Kid's got nothing on the King of the Mole People—he's got more laughs and more mud."—Kirkus Reviews Doug Underbelly is doing his best to be normal. It's not easy: he's bad at jokes, he's lousy at sports, and he lives in a creaky old mansion surrounded by gravestones. Also Magda, the weird girl at school, won't leave him alone. And if that weren’t enough, he recently got crowned King of an underground race of Mole People. Doug didn't ask to be king—it's a job he can't really avoid, like the eel sandwiches his dad makes for him (with love). If he thought dealing with seventh grade was tricky, it's nothing compared to navigating the feud between Mole People, Slug People, Mushroom Folk and Stone Goons, not to mention preventing giant worms from rising up and destroying everything. How will Doug restore order? It's all a matter of diplomacy! Christy Ottaviano Books

Book Synopsis A Rose for Emily and Other Stories by : William Faulkner
Download or read book A Rose for Emily and Other Stories written by William Faulkner and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a classic collection from one of America’s greatest authors. Though these short stories have universal appeal, they are intensely local in setting. With the exception of “Turn About,” which derives from the time of the First World War, all these tales unfold in a small town in Mississippi, William Faulkner’s birthplace and lifelong home. Some stories—such as “A Rose for Emily,” “The Hound,” and “That Evening Sun”—are famous, displaying an uncanny blend of the homely and the horrifying. But others, though less well known, are equally colorful and characteristic. The gently nostalgic “Delta Autumn” provides a striking contrast to “Dry September” and “Barn Burning,” which are intensely dramatic. As the editor, Saxe Commins, states in his illuminating Foreword: “These eight stories reflect the deep love and loathing, the tenderness and contempt, the identification and repudiation William Faulkner has felt for the traditions and the way of life of his own portion of the world.”
Book Synopsis The Prussian Officer and Other Stories by : D. H. Lawrence
Download or read book The Prussian Officer and Other Stories written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honoring his practice of tackling the taboo, esteemed author D.H Lawrence created a collection of evocative short fiction in The Prussian Officer and Other Stories. With themes of feminism and sexuality, The Prussian Officer and Other Stories examines varying levels and types of the abuse of power so common among men and government officials, especially in the 20th century. The Daughters of the Vicar depicts the aftermath of an unstable family as it follows Mary and Louisa, who are both sisters and best friends. Due to their father’s poor financial position and their parent’s loveless marriage, Mary and Louisa’s family is severely struggling. The women work as teachers to offer financial support, but when that proves to be too little, Mary is forced to marry a hideous an uncultured rich man. Miserable and dreading the rest of her life, Mary tries to warn Louisa from doing the same. Exploring similar topics, Second Best follows two sisters struggling with their identity and love life. Odour of Chrysanthemums depicts a later narrative of marriage than the aforementioned, as it portrays a woman’s emotional journey after being drained by her marriage. Separated into three parts, Odour of Chrysanthemums begins with the woman and her children waiting for her husband to return home, assuming he was at a pub. However, as the wait continues, they begin to suspect something more sinister may have occurred. Finally, the title story, The Prussian Officer stars a single military captain who feels that he has wasted his youth. In contrast, his orderly is young and in a happy relationship, making his captain jealous. Desiring his youth and feeling sexually attracted to the young man, the captain tries to ruin the orderly’s relationship and starts to abuse him, driving the young man to a dangerous decision. This collection of sentimental and compelling stories depicts sinister human truths and the depths of the despair societal expectations force upon people. With this careful and brutally honest portrayal, modern audiences are able to both observe the culture of 20th century England as well as consider dark human truths that are still prevalent today. This edition of The Prussian Officer and Other Stories by D.H Lawrence features a new, eye-catching cover design and is printed in a modern and easy-to-read font, crafting an accessible experience for contemporary readers.
