Book excerpt: As the classroom climate transforms into a more technology-enhanced environment with increased device availability, there is a growing need to understand how attitudes among teachers may be influenced by the use of these devices in the classroom. Because of current technology trends, device integration is essential to meet education goals (Keengwe, Schnellert, & Mills, 2012). Research suggests that the use of mobile devices in the classroom along with the expectations for teachers to integrate these devices into their curriculum can have significant effects on attitudes and behaviors among teachers and therefore, should be studied (Sahin et al., 2017; Moore, 2016; Beeland, 2002; Christensen, 2002). This study attempted to examine the difference in teacher attitudes toward technology integration based on their use of either Chromebooks or iPads as mobile devices in a one-to-one integrated middle-school classroom. Using a quantitative, causal comparative design, participants were selected from a population of middle-school teachers at two Southeastern United States school districts. The sample size of participants was 115, of which 73 used Chromebooks and 42 used iPads. Data were analyzed using an independent-samples t-test to examine the relationship between attitude and mobile device used. Results of the survey showed that no significant difference existed in the attitude scores of teachers’ and the mobile device they used. Although the study did not find significance in the attitude scores, the data indicated that attitudes were mostly positive. Further research should be conducted to include a broader population, other grade levels, and other mobile devices. Studies that look at variables such as self-efficacy, training, and confidence, along with attitude should be researched.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to measure factors that may lead to adaptations by teachers in their instructional practices as they relate to technology integration in a 1:1 laptop environment in a Western Pennsylvania school district. Much has been done around the concept of technology integration in schools and the impact or lack of impact on student achievement. Most of the literature on technology use in schools centers around availability and access to technology in the classroom setting. This study looks at the actual integration of technology through instructional delivery in the classroom. Teacher perceptions with regard to their own instructional practices were gathered using the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Framework and measured next to classroom observational practices as gathered by building administrators throughout the school year. If teacher perceptions using TPACK correlate with instructional technology delivery as measured by classroom observation using SAMR and the Charlotte Danielson Framework, then districts may be able to ensure their investment in technology by focusing on factors that increase likelihood of actual use in the classroom. Participants in this study reported above average comfort with regard to technology as related to technology knowledge and technology pedagogy knowledge which may be attributed to the time and investment in teaching staff by the district through ongoing professional development activities. In addition, teachers were observed implementing technology in their classrooms, in some cases at a higher level of implementation on the SAMR scale, as observed through walkthrough observations. Finally, the district in this study saw tremendous gains by first time test takers on state the mandated standardized test since the inception of the 1:1 initiative which might be attributed to the above mentioned professional development activities focused on technology, technology content creation, and instructional technology delivery.

School leadership support that reduces or removes integration barriers can assist teachers in the move from traditional teaching beliefs and practices towards successful classroom technology integration. This mixed methods study investigated beliefs of school leaders and teacher participants concerning support factors that affect technology integration from a mid-sized suburban public school system in the southeastern United States. The quantitative phase of this study included 556 school leaders and teachers. The quantitative survey Beliefs about Teaching with Technology (BATT) measured the school leaders and teachers' beliefs concerning support factors that affect technology integration. A MANOVA was used to identify significant differences between the two groups and to select the extreme cases for the second phase of the study. An extreme case was defined as one in which the school leaders and teachers had a statistically different view of the beliefs about teaching with technology. Significance was found at the p = .001 level in all categories of beliefs investigated. This qualitative phase of the study included participants from three extreme case schools. Interviews with key informants further explored the differences in beliefs between three leaders and nine teachers and identified differing perspectives between their beliefs about factors that support technology integration in their schools. These interviews also provided descriptions of behaviors related to individuals' beliefs about these factors. The constant comparative model was used for interview analysis. If classroom technology integration is to be successful, leaders and teachers in a school should possess similar beliefs about the availability and nature of the school-based support, resources, professional development, vision, and incentives necessary to encourage change within a school environment. This study identified the existence of differences in such beliefs between these two groups in one school system, a necessary step before conducting further research on the impact these differences in beliefs could have on individuals' behaviors related to the successful integration of technology into classroom instruction.

The study suggested that administrators should be focused on modeling appropriate technology use, creating a supportive environment, providing the necessary resources, including the appropriate professional development, and encouraging teachers to focus on raising student achievement by increasing student participation and student engagement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how school leaders support high levels of technology integration in regular classroom instruction at the middle school level. Teachers asked to integrate new and emerging technologies into their classrooms, require support that extends beyond professional development. Effective integration is that which is student-centred, and extends learning in the classroom to be collaborative, interactive, and differentiated. School leadership can provide the vision, direction, and structure that guide teachers in the effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their classrooms. By focusing on a local context, this study sought to isolate the school leadership decisions and actions that influence technology integration that is student-centred, at the classroom level. Teachers at two middle schools from similar districts, both with one-to-one programs, but different levels of technology integration, participated in surveys measuring the moderating effects of leadership and school structures on effective technology integration in classrooms. The quantitative portion of this case study, designed as a cross-case analysis, supported qualitative data collected from eight interviews across both school, including school principals, teachers, and related support personnel. Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data revealed the large effect that district and school leadership have on the decisions of teachers with technology in their classrooms. District leadership, in particular, had a strong effect on high levels of technology integration, followed by the decisions of school leadership, and opportunities for intentional collaboration around ICT implementation strategies. Between the two schools, significant differences were seen in the level of direction and support received from the district that correlated with the role of school leadership, and the ability of teachers to participate in meaningful collaboration around effective technology use in the classroom. Recommendations for school leadership include planning for specific training and opportunities for teacher collaboration at the direction of both school and district leadership. Future recommendations for research include a closer look at the role district leadership plays in facilitating effective technology integration at the classroom level, partnered with the role that technology support specialists at the district and school levels play in the leadership process.

The 22 studies in this meta-analysis, carried out between the years 2010 and 2017, investigated the effects of Turkey's technology integration initiative on teachers' attitudes and met the inclusion criteria. This study followed a traditional meta-analysis research approach utilizing Hedge's g effect size to combine studies. The effect size was calculated using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. The result (g = .31) indicates that Turkey's technology integration initiative had a moderate but significant influence on teacher attitudes. In addition to teacher attitudes, barriers that could contribute to some K-12 teachers' lack of integration training were identified. Based on the results it is recommended that future professional development and training for teachers include assessments of teacher technology usage by administrators, an increase in time for collaborative planning among teachers, and more just-in-time technology support for technology integration.
