Book excerpt: Dynamic Chess Down Under! The Doeberl Cup has been Australia’s premier weekend chess tournament since its inception in 1963. It has attracted more international masters and grandmasters than any other Australian tournament. The Doeberl Cup – Fifty Years of Australian Chess History tells the stories behind the first 49 Doeberl Cups without neglecting the many tense and spectacular games which decided the top placings. In addition to over 200 annotated games and game fragments, the author presents player biographies of not only Australia’s best players and visiting stars, but also many wonderful – and weird – characters who helped create the character of the Doeberl Cup. Dozens of photographs nicely complement the showcasing of Australia’s best talent over more than a generation. The result is a splendid account of Australian chess history since the early 1960s. From the legendary Cecil Purdy through Australia’s brightest star Ian Rogers, join author Bill Egan as he takes you through the thrills and spills of dynamic chess down under. “Personally I had a great time reading this book (a true labor of love from author Bill Egan), and I’ll make sure it has an honorable home on my bookshelf, ready to be grabbed and enjoyed many more times in the future.” – Jeremy Silman, jeremysilman.com “The Doeberl Cup: Fifty Years of Australian Chess History is a first-rate account of this event which has come to mean so much for Australian chess.” – John Donaldson, Chess Today

Book excerpt: A tale of hardship and social injustice, Miss Purdy's Class by Annie Murray is a heartfelt saga with strong emotional relationships at its heart. In the New Year of 1936, Gwen Purdy, aged twenty-one, leaves her home to become a schoolteacher in a poor area of Birmingham. Her parents are horrified, but she has the support of her fiance, a recently ordained clergyman. Her early weeks in Birmingham are an eye-opener: at the school she faces a class of fifty-two children, some of whose homes are among Birmingham's very poorest. One of the teachers, the elderly Miss Drysdale, proves an inspiration, and Gwen begins to understand the appalling hardships endured by the children as she is drawn into their lives. Little Lucy Fernandez is a 'cripple' and an epileptic. Through her, Gwen meets Daniel Fernandez, the elder brother in a fatherless household. The family has roots in a Wales' small Spanish community, and Daniel is a young man as fierce and passionate in his emotions as in his social concerns. Gwen falls in love, and is quickly engaged in his battle to win rights for the working classes. As the Brigades are mobilized to fight the Spanish Civil War, Gwen has to face the fact that Daniel has secrets in his past which she would rather not face up to . . .
Book Synopsis Nā Mele o Hawai‘i Nei by : Samuel H. Elbert
Download or read book Nā Mele o Hawai‘i Nei written by Samuel H. Elbert and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here for the first time is a large collection of Hawaiian songs in an authoritative text with translation (music not included). The texts have never before been written consistently with the glottal stops (indicating syllabic breaks between vowels) and macrons (indicating long vowels and stresses) that make the words pronounceable by those unfamiliar with the Hawaiian language. Many of the songs have not been translated before or have only been freely adapted rather than translated. These 101 songs are all postmissionary and owe their musical origin to missionary hymns, although only a few are religious. None are technically chants, though some are chants that have been edited and set to music. They date from the mid-1850s (most are from the time of the monarchy) to 1968 (the date of Mary Kawena Pukui's translation of Christmas songs). Nearly all of these songs are sung today and are well known to Hawaiian singers. Included are love songs, and Christmas songs. There is an exhaustive introduction, which includes classification and arrangement of the songs; a note on the composers; and analysis of the structure, symbolism, and meanings of the songs; and a note on the translations and on the poetic vocabulary of the Hawaiian words.
