Book Synopsis Co-operatives in a Global Economy by : J. J. McMurtry
Download or read book Co-operatives in a Global Economy written by J. J. McMurtry and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their efforts to internationalize in the emerging global economy, co-operatives not only face a variety of problems that are common to all firms, but encounter specific challenges due to their particular value commitments, forms of incorporation and organizational structures. These features of cooperatives are generally seen as a major source of competitive disadvantages and may cause significant trade-offs, forcing cooperatives to choose between living up to their principles of member ownership and control and remaining economically viable. Critics argue that such trade-offs signal the increasing irrelevance of cooperatives in a global economy. Advocates, however, counter that cooperatives may have unique competitive advantages which can be exploited in a global economy and that current trade-offs facing cooperatives can be overcome with the development of new international and transnational cooperative institutions and practices. Cooperatives, they claim, represent a much more sustainable and equitable form of production and may form the basis for viable, alternative approaches to development. This collection examines these debates about the roles of cooperatives in our increasingly global economy.
Book Synopsis Making Capitalism in Rural China by : Michael John Webber
Download or read book Making Capitalism in Rural China written by Michael John Webber and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stimulating and challenging book explores the duplicitous nature of development in China. On the positive side, it brings longer and healthier lives; fewer children dead before they are five years old; more comfort and security from famine and disaster; more education; more communication; more travel; less war. But from another, darker perspective, development brings violence to some people – those who are in the way of the new things, those who cannot adapt to the new ways – and it threatens old knowledges, habits and societies as it disrupts old power structures. Michael Webber presents fascinating case studies that demonstrate what these forms of development mean for people who are relatively weak or powerless – those who post-colonial theorists call the subalterns. The cases illustrate how development can change the manner in which people relate to each other and threatens their entire environment. Through this detailed consideration of the impacts of development on the people who live in those places, he examines whether these changes represent the emergence of capitalism or a transition, develops a theory of relationships between economy and daily life and questions the very nature of Chinese capitalism. This multidisciplinary study encompasses the social sciences to provide a coherent view of the forms that development takes in various places within rural China. As such, it will prove a fascinating and thought-provoking read for undergraduates, postgraduate students and researchers within economics, Asian studies, development studies and geography.
Book Synopsis The Broadview Guide to Writing: A Handbook for Students - Sixth Edition by : Corey Frost
Download or read book The Broadview Guide to Writing: A Handbook for Students - Sixth Edition written by Corey Frost and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Even the most useful reference guides are not always, well, shall we say, riveting. A refreshing exception is the new Broadview Guide to Writing, which is smart, helpful, and even fun to read.” —Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, authors of They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Key Features —A coil-bound reference text suitable for a range of introductory composition and writing courses —Divided into three sections: Writing Processes (including Research, Argumentation, and Style) Writing Mechanics (Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation) Writing Contexts (Writing in different academic disciplines, Forms and conventions, and citation) —Comprehensive treatment of citation style guides, with 2016 MLA style updates —Expanded treatment of research methods, argument structures, and writing in the workplace —A unique section on “How to Be Good With Words”—issues of gender, race, class, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc. —Expanded coverage for those whose native language is not English —All-new chapter on reading images —Extensive companion website featuring interactive exercises Increasingly, writing handbooks are seen as over-produced and overpriced. One stands out: The Broadview Guide to Writing is published in an elegant but simple format, and sells for roughly half the price of its fancier-looking competitors. That does not change with the new edition; what does change and stay up-to-date is the content of the book. The sixth edition brings a substantial re-organization of the contents under three headings: Writing Processes, Writing Mechanics, and Writing Contexts. Coverage of APA, Chicago, and CSE styles of documentation has been substantially expanded, and the MLA section has now been fully revised to take into account all the 2016 changes. Also expanded is coverage of academic argument; of writing and critical thinking; of writing about literature, of paragraphing; of how to integrate quoted material into one’s own work; of balance and parallelism; and of issues of gender, race, religion etc. in writing. The chapter “Seeing and Meaning: Reading (and Writing About) Visual Images” is entirely new to the sixth edition.

Book Synopsis The Public Role In The Dairy Economy by : Alden C Manchester
Download or read book The Public Role In The Dairy Economy written by Alden C Manchester and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, governments play a part in the milk business for compelling economic reasons and not, as many assert, just because dairy farmers are numerous and organized. This book examines the role of federal, state, and local governments in the dairy economy of the United States, where major public involvement in industry began during the Great Depression. Dr. Manchester considers the conditions in the 1930s that led to government involvement, the changes that have occurred in the industry and the public role since then, and the prospects for the 1980s and beyond. He also analyzes possible alternative public dairy policies for the present and the rest of the decade. Many things have changed, points out Dr. Manchester, but the fundamental conditions that led to public involvement in the dairy industry still exist.

Book Synopsis The German Dairy Sector:Internationalization - Competitiveness - Supply Chains by : Johannes Meyer
Download or read book The German Dairy Sector:Internationalization - Competitiveness - Supply Chains written by Johannes Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German dairy industry is the second largest sector of German agribusiness in terms of turnover. In recent years, it has been characterized by a strong liberalization, which means that it is facing increased competition, both on domestic and foreign markets. At the same time, the demands from politics and society are increasing, for example with regard to environmental legislation and GMO-free feeding. Against this background, the dissertation examines both quantitatively and qualitatively how various factors affect milk production in Germany and derives future developments on this basis. In view of the changing competitive environment, the dissertation examines the international competitiveness of the German dairy industry by analysing foreign trade data. In addition, the internationalization strategies present in the German dairy industry are identified and their influence on economic success is analysed by means of panel data analysis based on annual financial statements of dairy companies. Based on the results, opportunities and risks, as well as possibilities of implementing a potential market entry into the Brazilian dairy market are analysed.
