Previous studies have shown that job satisfaction leads to increased teacher retention and lower turnover. Lower teacher turnover has been associated with increased student achievement. The findings in this research of a rural school district support previous research studies that had been completed in larger urban settings linking these studies to a broader implementation of these findings to target a positive school climate. From this study, there is an identified link between school climate and job satisfaction. If a teacher's perception of school climate is positive, they will also perceive their job satisfaction to be higher. Teachers involved within this study report their job satisfaction within a half a point of their school climate perceptions on average. Schools can predict the overall job satisfaction of its teachers by their perceptions of school climate. Additionally, from this research, it is important for districts to be able to understand areas of growth within their school climate to drive increased teacher job satisfaction. With increasing levels of teachers leaving the profession facing districts, this trend can be reversed by working to improve school climate and job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the impact of the school climate components of teacher job satisfaction, morale, and efficacy on student achievement. This qualitative study utilized semi-structured interviews of both principals and teachers, reviewed information pertaining to the school district's Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation, and from the School Matters website pertaining to one school that made Adequate Yearly Progress, and one that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress. The sample of eight teachers was selected using a purposive sampling and the accounts of their personal ideas, feelings, beliefs, and perceptions of their feelings of job satisfaction, morale, and efficacy were presented through direct quotes to provide richness in detailing their real world descriptions. The principals at both elementary schools were also interviewed to determine their feelings about the climate within their respective buildings. Teachers at the both schools indicated that their personal feelings did not influence their professional obligations; however, in the school that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress, the teachers indicated that they wanted to be respected by their principal; therefore, in this study, it appears that feelings of job satisfaction can impact a school's potential to make Adequate Yearly Progress. Findings revealed that teacher morale has the potential to impact a school's ability to make Adequate Yearly Progress because in the school that made Adequate Yearly Progress, there was a sense of trust, confidence, and enthusiasm that existed among its teachers, whereas, in the school that did not make Adequate Yearly Progress, this type of atmosphere was not fully operational. Teacher efficacy did not appear to have an impact on a school's potential to make Adequate Yearly Progress because teachers at both schools were confident about their ability to successfully teach their students. School principals and those aspiring to be building level supervisors, may wish to explore the findings of this research to address components of school climate. This information can enable them to foster an environment that is conducive for student learning. Teachers are a valuable asset to the educational profession which includes helping students and building level administrators achieve success.

Book excerpt: Providing quality education for students in disadvantaged communities has been at the forefront of educational research for decades. These schools struggle each year with budgets that fail to meet the needs of the school, low teacher and student morale, and low teacher retention. Success for All has been identified as an effective program to increase literacy skills and standardized test scores for disadvantaged children. The purpose of this quasi-experimental static-group comparison study was to investigate the impact of Success for All on teacher satisfaction and school climate in low performing schools. Teacher satisfaction and school climate have an instrumental, positive effect on a student’s capability to learn and perform at school. This study sought to determine if Success for All has had an impact on these characteristics within a Kentucky school district. The researcher collected data though the use of a job satisfaction survey and the school district’s climate survey. An independent samples t test was utilized to determine whether there were statistically significant differences. In the research question regarding teacher satisfaction, it was found that there were significant differences between a school that utilizes Success for All and one that does not in the areas of supervision, contingent rewards, operating conditions, coworkers, communication, and total satisfaction. In the research question regarding school climate, it was found that there were significant differences in the areas of time, facilities and resources, managing student conduct, teacher leadership, school leadership, and professional learning. It was concluded that the school that utilized Success for All had lower scores in all categories and the most negative impact. Future tests should be administered to determine what factors of the program caused the negative impacts.

Book excerpt: The high rate of teacher attrition has been an enduring problem that needs to be resolved for educational policymakers. Studies have demonstrated that teacher job satisfaction is associated with teachers decisions on whether to leave their profession. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between teachers perceptions of school climate and teacher job satisfaction. This study used data from Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2013 database. Multilevel modeling results indicated that teachers perceptions of school climate have a significantly positive relationship with teacher job satisfaction. Older teachers are more satisfied than younger teachers. Teachers with more working experience have higher levels of job satisfaction than those with less experience. No significant relationship was found between school characteristics (i.e., school location, school type and school socioeconomic status) and teacher job satisfaction. The findings highlighted the importance of building a positive and sustained school climate for all teachers in order to improve teacher job satisfaction.

The study involved 32 teachers of grades five through twelve of a charter school in central Pennsylvania. The data of the study were collected through the use of an online survey that included Likert-scale statements and open-ended questions. One-to-one interviews were conducted with five participants in order to gain greater insight into teacher perceptions regarding school climate of a charter school. The data revealed relationships between teachers and between teachers and students to be a significant factor effecting school climate. Additionally, the data revealed some teachers of the charter school were satisfied with their jobs while others were dissatisfied. Finally, it was discovered that the news of the closing of the charter school had a substantial effect on the climate of the charter school.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to investigate the relationships between school climate, school culture, teacher efficacy, collective efficacy, teacher job satisfaction and intent to turnover in the context of year-round education (YRE) calendars. The research design of this study utilized an e-mail invitation to participate with a uniform resource locator (URL) embedded in the message to link participants to an internet-based questionnaire. The questionnaire was delivered to 1,254 teachers employed in nine participating school districts in Kentucky that operated on YRE school calendars. The response rate was 60%. Teachers ( N = 748) responded to an internet-based questionnaire consisting of six scales on the variables of school climate, school culture, teacher efficacy, collective efficacy, teacher job satisfaction and intent to turnover. An open-ended question from the internetbased questionnaire was examined as qualitative support for the findings from the quantitative data. Quantitative analysis involved examining descriptive statistics and correlations among research variables at the teacher level. Data were analyzed using Pearson's r correlations, ANOVA and hierarchical regression analysis. The findings demonstrated overall statistically significant positive correlations with study variables. High to moderate statistically significant positive correlations were found between school climate, school culture; teacher efficacy, collective efficacy, teacher job satisfaction and teacher intent to turnover. After statistically controlling for demographic variables (ethnicity, gender, age, and years of YRE teaching experience, the addition of school climate subscale scores (collegial leadership, professional teacher behavior, achievement press, institutional vulnerability), school culture subscale scores (inquiry practice, teaching learning community and collective problem solving) into the second block of the regression equation resulted in an additional 16% of the variance; After statistically controlling for school climate subscale scores (collegial leadership, professional teacher behavior, achievement press, institutional vulnerability) , school culture subscale scores (inquiry practice, teaching learning community and collective problem solving), the addition of teacher efficacy subscale scores (student engagement, teacher instructional practices and classroom management) into the third block of the regression equation resulted in an additional 18% ( p
