Book excerpt: This timely book provides support for secondary mathematics teachers learning how to enact high-quality, equitable math instruction with dynamic, mathematics-specific technologies. Using practical advice from their own work as well as from interviews with 23 exceptional technology-using math teachers, the authors develop a vision of teaching with technology that positions all students as powerful doers of mathematics using math-specific technologies (e.g., dynamic graphing and geometry applications, data exploration tools, computer algebra systems, virtual manipulatives). Each chapter includes sample tasks, advice from technology-using math teachers, and guiding questions to help teachers with implementation. The book offers a rich space for secondary math teachers to explore important pedagogical practices related to teaching with technology, combined with broader discussions of changing the narratives about students – emphasizing the mathematics they can do and the mathematics they deserve. Accompanying online support materials include video vignettes of teachers and students interacting around technology-enhanced tasks in the classroom, as well as examples of more than 30 high-quality technology-enhanced tasks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the course of two years, a twenty-something punk rocker eats a cheese slice from every pizzeria in New York City, gets sober, falls in love, and starts a blog that captures headlines around the world--he is the Slice Harvester, and this is his story. Since its arrival on US shores in 1905, pizza has risen from an obscure ethnic food to an iconic symbol of American culture. It has visited us in our dorm rooms and apartments, sometimes before we'd even unpacked or painted. It has nourished us during our jobs, consoled us during break-ups, and celebrated our triumphs right alongside us. In August 2009, Colin Hagendorf set out to review every regular slice of pizza in Manhattan, and his blog, Slice Harvester, was born. Two years and nearly 400 slices later, he'd been featured in The Wall Street Journal, the Daily News (New York), and on radio shows all over the country. Suddenly, this self-proclaimed punk who was barely making a living doing burrito delivery and selling handmade zines had a following. But at the same time Colin was stepping up his game for the masses (grabbing slices with Phoebe Cates and her teenage daughter, reviewing kosher pizza so you don't have to), his personal life was falling apart. A problem drinker and chronic bad boyfriend, he started out using the blog as a way to escape--the hangovers, the midnight arguments, the hangovers again--until finally realizing that by taking steps to reach a goal day by day, he'd actually put himself in a place to finally take control of his life for good"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shape of Algebra is the authors' attempt to share their mathematical experiences with readers who have more than a passing interest in mathematics, but have only a traditional exposure to elementary algebra. Secondary school and college teachers and students who want to expand their horizons in the field will find a fresh presentation of familiar concepts and some unexpected results. This book serves as a text for an "appreciation" course in modern mathematics designed for non-mathematics majors or for first-year students who are considering the possibility of studying mathematics or related disciplines. It can also serve as a source of computer-supported activities that could supplement traditional courses in algebra, multivariable calculus, and complex variable. This book gives the reader a sense of the visual nature of mathematics. Mathematical experiments with universal mapping software VisuMatica, designed by Vladimir Nodel'man, form the very core of the book. Readers are encouraged to reproduce, play with, and expand on these experiments. Numerous problems are interspersed throughout the text to guide the reader. Our treatment of standard algebra is visual and computational. By introducing visual computational environments like VisuMatica, our book promotes this geometric approach to algebra and makes it accessible to readers a great deal earlier. The book will enable our readers to approach its content on three levels: the first one which requires only some fluency with elementary algebraic manipulations; the second one which also presumes familiarity with the notions of derivatives and tangent lines to plane curves, and the third one which uses some basic concepts of multivariable calculus. All three levels are clearly marked in the text, and will allow for a smooth reading and virtual experiments, regardless of the level that our readers will find comfortable.

Book excerpt: A Logical Introduction to Probability and Induction is a textbook on the mathematics of the probability calculus and its applications in philosophy. On the mathematical side, the textbook introduces these parts of logic and set theory that are needed for a precise formulation of the probability calculus. On the philosophical side, the main focus is on the problem of induction and its reception in epistemology and the philosophy of science. Particular emphasis is placed on the means-end approach to the justification of inductive inference rules. In addition, the book discusses the major interpretations of probability. These are philosophical accounts of the nature of probability that interpret the mathematical structure of the probability calculus. Besides the classical and logical interpretation, they include the interpretation of probability as chance, degree of belief, and relative frequency. The Bayesian interpretation of probability as degree of belief locates probability in a subject's mind. It raises the question why her degrees of belief ought to obey the probability calculus. In contrast to this, chance and relative frequency belong to the external world. While chance is postulated by theory, relative frequencies can be observed empirically. A Logical Introduction to Probability and Induction aims to equip students with the ability to successfully carry out arguments. It begins with elementary deductive logic and uses it as basis for the material on probability and induction. Throughout the textbook results are carefully proved using the inference rules introduced at the beginning, and students are asked to solve problems in the form of 50 exercises. An instructor's manual contains the solutions to these exercises as well as suggested exam questions. The book does not presuppose any background in mathematics, although sections 10.3-10.9 on statistics are technically sophisticated and optional. The textbook is suitable for lower level undergraduate courses in philosophy and logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An issue-driven introduction to industrial organization, thoroughly updated and revised. The study of industrial organization (IO)—the analysis of the way firms compete with one another—has become a key component of economics and of such related disciplines as finance, strategy, and marketing. This book provides an issue-driven introduction to industrial organization. Although formal in its approach, it is written in a way that requires only basic mathematical training. It includes a vast array of examples, from both within and outside the United States. This second edition has been thoroughly updated and revised. In addition to updated examples, this edition presents a more systematic treatment of public policy implications. It features added advanced sections, with analytical treatment of ideas previously presented verbally; and exercises, which allow for a deeper and more formal understanding of each topic. The new edition also includes an introduction to such empirical methods as demand estimation and equilibrium identification. Supplemental material is available online.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workbook for day-to-day decisions Nutrition labels on various food products must comply with numerous, ever-changing requirements. Items such as meat and poultry products, food packages, and dietary supplements are subject to stringent federal regulations-and the costs of compliance are often significant. The Nutritional Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA) imposed new mandates for labeling of many packaged food products; still others became subject to a voluntary nutrition labeling program. Following that lead, USDA has imposed parallel labeling requirements. FDA and USDA Nutrition Labeling Guide: Decision Diagrams, Checklists, and Regulations provides hands-on information and guidelines for understanding the latest federal nutrition labeling requirements. This plain English analysis of FDA and FSIS labeling rules contains diagrams and tables and cites specific regulations. Decision diagrams walk the reader through volumes of information and make sense out of complicated regulatory processes. Checklists for managing information for developing specific labels help the reader track regulatory changes and document regulation applicability to company products. The RegFinder index references not only the text, but also provides hundreds of regulatory citations, referenced by topic. FDA and USDA Nutrition Labeling Guide: Decision Diagrams, Checklists, and Regulations will be of interest to food industry personnel responsible for compliance with federal nutritional labeling regulations, food product developers and food technologists. Faculty teaching food laws and regulations and food product development will also find this book of interest.
