Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fact-filled, fun-filled, as interesting to parents as it is to kids, the How Come? series is the trusted source for lively, clear answers to kids’ science queries. Now the best questions and answers from all three books—How Come?; How Come? Planet Earth; and How Come? In the Neighborhood—have been revised, updated, freshly illustrated in full color, supplemented with twenty completely new questions, and combined into one bigger, better volume. How Come? explains, in fascinating detail, more than 200 mysteries and phenomena in the world around us. These are the questions that pique kids’ curiosity—and stump parents. When it rains, does running (rather than walking) to the nearest shelter really keep you any drier? How can a stone skip across a pond (instead of sink)? If the Earth is spinning, why can’t we feel it? Why don’t we fly off? Why do elephants have trunks? And the all-time classic, Why is the sky blue? (Sunlight has a hidden rainbow of colors, and air molecules scatter blues the most—sending bright blue light down to Earth.) The text is clearly written, engaging, and accessible. It’s for every kid who wants to know—and every grown-up who simply doesn’t know.

He faced lifes problems without ever losing his sense of humor, his spirit, or his optimistic outlook. His autobiography takes us inside a family of twelve children, raised in Detroit, and shows us the funny side of growing up in a large family in the post war years. He gives us a very candid look at life in the United States Army in the nineteen sixties. His civic and political activities led him to meetings and shared speaking engagements with U. S. Senators, Vice Presidents of the United States, and a meeting in the Oval Office with President Richard Nixon. We follow his business career with a no-holds barred look at the people he worked with as he progressed toward becoming the Chief Executive Officer of several companies. As Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a Fortune 500 company, he worked with the financial giants of Wall Street. Pat and his wife, Diane, took their family on annual vacations that eventually brought them to thirty countries. His insights and the humorous incidences that they encounter make for an irreverent tour guide for traveling abroad. Having survived several cancer operations, hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, dozens of kidney stones, and more than a dozen other surgeries and diseases, he calls himself, Gods lab rat. His latest cancers led his granddaughter to ask her mother, How come nothing ever kills granddad?

Book excerpt: Key account management (KAM) is not a sales initiative, it is a business-wide process that must be managed and supported from the top. This handbook is designed for all those involved in the management of key accounts, but who are uncertain about how these important customers are identified, selected and managed. Peter Cheverton shows how to achieve the core objectives of KAM: retain existing customers in a competitive environment; grow through acquiring new long-term contracts; achieve global "preferred supplier" status; manage customers serviced by several departments in a consistent way; create a customer-intimate business; and achieve operational excellence. According to Cheverton the purpose of KAM is "managing the future" - achieving a realistic balance between objectives, the market opportunity and the resources available. Global cases, tools, techniques and exercises are all included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American comics reflect the distinct sensibilities and experiences of the Jewish American men who played an outsized role in creating them, but what about the contributions of Jewish women? Focusing on the visionary work of seven contemporary female Jewish cartoonists, Tahneer Oksman draws a remarkable connection between innovations in modes of graphic storytelling and the unstable, contradictory, and ambiguous figurations of the Jewish self in the postmodern era. Oksman isolates the dynamic Jewishness that connects each frame in the autobiographical comics of Aline Kominsky Crumb, Vanessa Davis, Miss Lasko-Gross, Lauren Weinstein, Sarah Glidden, Miriam Libicki, and Liana Finck. Rooted in a conception of identity based as much on rebellion as identification and belonging, these artists' representations of Jewishness take shape in the spaces between how we see ourselves and how others see us. They experiment with different representations and affiliations without forgetting that identity ties the self to others. Stemming from Kominsky Crumb's iconic 1989 comic "Nose Job," in which her alter ego refuses to assimilate through cosmetic surgery, Oksman's study is an arresting exploration of invention in the face of the pressure to disappear.

This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents G. A. Cohen's Gifford Lectures, delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 1996. Focusing on Marxism and Rawlsian liberalism, Cohen draws a connection between these thought systems and the choices that shape a person's life. In the case of Marxism, the relevant life is his own: a communist upbringing in the 1940s in Montreal, which induced a belief in a strongly socialist egalitarian doctrine. The narrative of Cohen's reckoning with that inheritance develops through a series of sophisticated engagements with the central questions of social and political philosophy. In the case of Rawlsian doctrine, Cohen looks to people's lives in general. He argues that egalitarian justice is not only, as Rawlsian liberalism teaches, a matter of rules that define the structure of society, but also a matter of personal attitude and choice. Personal attitude and choice are, moreover, the stuff of which social structure itself is made. Those truths have not informed political philosophy as much as they should, and Cohen's focus on them brings political philosophy closer to moral philosophy, and to the Judeo-Christian ethical tradition, than it has recently been.
