Income and revenue are generated and not expected to fall from the sky. Income is obtained if there is production of goods and services in the economy. A country is less developed, emerging or developed based on socio economic criteria, whose foundation can be traced to the production of goods and services or business. It would be very strategic for any country to capitalise on its comparative advantages in order to have a place in the provision of goods and services in the world market. Today, Africa cannot compete with China or other Asian nations in the domain of electronics and ICT for example.There are no production industriues for computers, cell phones and other minor electrical appliances in Africa. Therefore Africa is doomed to import all of these as of now. However, Africa has a comparative advantage on some of the major agricultural products that can enable it push export revenue and reverse balance deficit. For example, Cameroon can reverse its balance deficit in 10 years time by stopping palm oil imports. This may even take a shorter time (2 years) if Cameroon exports part of its projected production as outlined in this book. The cultivation of oil palm is dependent on many natural resources, human resources and ecological processes that interlink them. Oil palm cultivation necessitates good soils, appropriate climatic conditions, water resources and manpower, and since few trees are planted per hectare (143/ha), companies need vast expanses of land. The use of vast areas of land for the cultivation of oil palm should not lead to the destruction of ecological niches and human settlement. This is the new strategy for sustainable oil palm plantation establishments. This book describes the development of an economic cluster in Cameroon consequence of a knock-on-effect sparked off by the establishment of a hypothetical figure of 1 million hectares of oil palm plantation. It describes the socio economic advantages that come with such development. It also gives some light on how the crop can be grown sustainably and ways to mitigate conflicts in the sector.

Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. In Cameroon, the years following the last global financial crisis saw a boom in Chinese investments in the rubber industry, in particular in rubber estates belonging to two companies: Sud-Cameroun Hevea SA and GMG HEVECAM. These investments come from Sinochem, one of the largest Chinese state-owned multinationals, and involve the rehabilitation of existing rubber estates, as well as expansion into new areas. Since the initial investment from China, exports of rubber from Cameroon to China increased from almost none to nearly half of total rubber exports in 2011. We conducted research into the nature and extent of Chinas investment in the Cameroonian rubber sector and assessed initial findings through the lens of socially responsible investments (SRI). Overall, the picture shows that the two investments are subject to a number of governance challenges, particularly in relation to land allocations.

Sustaining such a pace of growth will entail rapid expansion of the level of activity in key carbon-emitting sectors, such as power, oil and gas, agriculture and transport. In the absence of policies to accompany economic growth with a reduced carbon foot-print, emissions of greenhouse gases could more than double in the next two decades. This study finds that there are several options for Nigeria to achieve the development objectives of vision 20:2020 and beyond, but stabilizing emissions at 2010 levels, and with domestic benefits in the order of 2 percent of GDP. These benefits include cheaper and more diversified electricity sources; more efficient operation of the oil and gas industry; more productive and climate –resilient agriculture; and better transport services, resulting in fuel economies, better air quality, and reduced congestion. The study outlines several actions that the Federal Government could undertake to facilitate the transition towards a low carbon economy, including enhanced governance for climate action, integration of climate consideration in the Agriculture Transformation Agenda, promotion of energy efficiency programs, scale-up of low carbon technologies in power generation (such as renewables an combined cycle gas turbines), and enhance vehicle fuel efficiency.
