Book excerpt: Equality of opportunity in housing is a key issue in social justice in Britain today. To the extent that it patterns an individual's educational, social and economic development, housing constitutes a crucial battleground in the fight against racial discrimination. Housing, Race and Law is the first publication to examine the law in relation to issues of housing and race in both the private and public sector. It places these issues in the broader context of the development of anti-discrimination legislation, outlines the current legislation and examines its impact in relation to owner occupation, public housing, housing association tenancies and private lets. Throughout, the book emphasizes the practical impact of the various legislative provisions, and discusses the responses of the principle institutions from government departments and relevant professions to the Commission for Racial Equality and the Community Relations Councils (or Racial Equality Councils). It argues a case for a new approach to appraisal, review and enforcement. By collating material from a wide variety of sources, the author provides an original assessment of the Race Relations Act of 1976 and its impact on housing which, in its provision of cogent material and arguments for reforms, is designed to be of value to practitioners, academics and those concerned with racial discrimination.

Book Synopsis Including the Poor by : Michael Lipton
Download or read book Including the Poor written by Michael Lipton and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the role of government policy in economic development in the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea has achieved economic success on many fronts. Real GNP has tripled every decade since the 1960s. A dynamic and flexible manufacturing sector now dominates the economy. The benefits of growth have been widely distributed, with a sharp decrease in poverty. This study, like others in the series, seeks to draw lessons from such success and to identify and analyze the policies behind this strong economic performance. Koreas development strategy and macroeconomic performance are outlined in Part I. Several factors are seen to underlie strong growth, including the maintenance of a stable macroenvironment, flexible and pragmatic policies, and investment in infrastructure and human capital. Part II assesses the role played by industrial policy since 1961. Particular attention is given to the Heavy and Chemical Industry (HCI) drive, launched in 1973 to diversify and upgrade Koreas industrial sector. The authors note that while the HCI has been largely successful, it also has been very costly, particularly to the financial sector. Part III outlines the role of institutions and the close relationships among the government, the bureaucracy, and business. The key to Koreas rapid development, according to the authors, was the governments commitment to growth and its early focus on equity and wide distribution of the gains from growth. The authors also laud the efficiency and effectiveness of Koreas public and private sector institutions, which they see as models for all developing nations.

Book Synopsis China's Industrial State-owned Enterprises Between Profitability and Bankruptcy by : Carsten Holz
Download or read book China's Industrial State-owned Enterprises Between Profitability and Bankruptcy written by Carsten Holz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of declining profitability, China's industrial state-owned enterprises appear to be obsolete. This book utilizes extensive data and quantitative as well as qualitative analyses to examine the reasons for the decline in the profitability of these industrial state-owned enterprises, to determine their current profitability patterns across various dimensions, and to account for profitability gaps between these enterprises and those managed under other ownership forms. China's recent enterprise reform measures are also evaluated. A differentiated picture emerges that clarifies past developments and illuminates future prospects of the reform of industrial state-owned enterprises in China.

Book Synopsis China in the Reform Era by : Xiaowei Zang
Download or read book China in the Reform Era written by Xiaowei Zang and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than twenty-one years have passed since Deng Xiaoping started economic reforms in 1978. Since then significant social changes have occurred in China. Despite the lack of major changes in its political system, China has experienced and sustained rapid economic growth and a profound transformation of social and economic institutions far beyond the initial scope of the reforms. Before 1978, China had no room for private business and different political opinions. The leadership of the Chinese Communist Party was in the hands of revolutionary veterans with little education. The centrally planned economy guaranteed state workers permanent employment and social security. The pattern of income distribution was characterised by egalitarianism. China in the Reform Era covers a wide spectrum of issues that have emerged in China in the 1990s, ranging from China's impetus for reforming state enterprises to the emergence of self-help organisations of people with disability in urban China.

The phenomenon of homelessness is not new, but it has only recently been perceived as a social problem in European Member States. Even in the early 1990s little was known about the paths in and out of homelessness. This volume presents the papers arising from EUROHOME: Emergency and Transitory Housing for Homeless people: Needs and Best Practices. This project enabled a review of the state of knowledge in the field, an analysis of recent trends and a discussion of the prospects for improvement in the prevention of homelessness and the public response to housing in Europe. EUROHOME, and this collection, thus bring together experts in the study of: *

Download or read book In Search of Paradise written by Li Zhang and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new revolution in homeownership and living has been sweeping the booming cities of China. This time the main actors on the social stage are not peasants, migrants, or working-class proletariats but middle-class professionals and entrepreneurs in search of a private paradise in a society now dominated by consumerism. No longer seeking happiness and fulfillment through collective sacrifice and socialist ideals, they hope to find material comfort and social distinction in newly constructed gated communities. This quest for the good life is profoundly transforming the physical and social landscapes of urban China. Li Zhang, who is from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, turns a keen ethnographic eye on her hometown. She combines her analysis of larger political and social issues with fine-grained details about the profound spatial, cultural, and political effects of the shift in the way Chinese urban residents live their lives and think about themselves. In Search of Paradise is a deeply informed account of how the rise of private homeownership is reconfiguring urban space, class subjects, gender selfhood, and ways of life in the reform era. New, seemingly individualistic lifestyles mark a dramatic move away from yearning for a social utopia under Maoist socialism. Yet the privatization of property and urban living have engendered a simultaneous movement of public engagement among homeowners as they confront the encroaching power of the developers. This double movement of privatized living and public sphere activism, Zhang finds, is a distinctive feature of the cultural politics of the middle classes in contemporary China. Theoretically sophisticated and highly accessible, Zhang's account will appeal not only to those interested in China but also to anyone interested in spatial politics, middle-class culture, and postsocialist governing in a globalizing world.
