Book excerpt: Using longitudinal data from the Swiss Household Panel to zoom in on continuity and change in the life course, this open access book describes how the lives of the Swiss population have changed in terms of health, family circumstances, work, political participation, and migration over the last sixteen years. What are the different trajectories in terms of mobility, health, wealth, and family constellations? What are the drivers behind all these changes over time and in the life course? And what are the implications for inequality in society and for social policy? The Swiss Household Panel is a unique ongoing longitudinal survey that has followed a large sample of Swiss households since 1999. The data provide the rare opportunity to go beyond a snapshot of contemporary Swiss society and give insight into the processes in people’s lives and in society that lie behind recent developments.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is discovering how much people spend and save in both two countries of Australia and Japan by using their household consumption, household saving, and household income. The important tool that required is calculation of Marginal Propensity to Save (MPS) and Marginal Propensity to Consume (MPC). Firstly, the literature review would perform information about both of Australia and Japan in depth in recent year for how countries deal with their economics. The progression with data collection would present where were information collected from and what information are required. The information then proceeding to the methodology that described how to calculate the consumption and saving of both Australia and Japan by using MPS and MPC formulas. Moreover, the methodology would perform the calculation on forecasting their future economy by applying five articles of The One: A Simulation of CAPM Market Returns, The Time Traveler's CAPM, Macroeconomic Forces and Arbitrage Pricing Theory, Estimating Time-Varying Beta Coefficients, and A practitioner's guide to the CAPM: an empirical study. Next up, the paper would discuss about the results on how much people spend and save money. These also appear as percentages. Overall, the conclusion suggests the recommendation on what government should do in order to grow their economies, and future forecasting presents the tendency of economies in Australia and Japan.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines the role that government policy in Australia plays in influencing household saving, both directly through its own saving and the structure of the tax, social security and welfare systems, and indirectly through the influence of the policy environment on factors that affect saving such as economic growth. The determinants of household saving in a sample of 21 OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries are also investigated, using both cross-section and panel estimation techniques.

Book excerpt: Individual pension accounts are growing in importance as a pillar of retirement incomes policy in the developed world. Policy-makers have generally assumed that by introducing pre-funded pension schemes, they can increase household wealth and thereby raise retirement incomes. However, there has been relatively little empirical work to confirm this. This paper focuses on the effect of Australia's system of compulsory pension accounts, the "Superannuation Guarantee", on household saving behaviour. Microeconomic data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, are used to explore three related questions:i. Have compulsory pension accounts increased household wealth? ii. What effect do compulsory pension accounts have on voluntary saving for retirement?iii. Do compulsory pension accounts influence the timing of retirement?. This paper finds that Australia's compulsory pension accounts increased household wealth. Voluntary saving for retirement in pension accounts also appeared to increase slightly, possibly due to the added convenience of being able to make contributions directly into these pension accounts. Finally, there is no evidence of a significant effect on retirement intentions. Overall, the results suggest that Australia's compulsory pension accounts have increased household wealth and raised self-funded retirement incomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper estimates the potential impact of immigration on household sector savings in Australia using the 1988-89 Household Expenditure Survey. The study observes that both the voluntary and involuntary (or net tax contribution) components of saving are smaller for a typical immigrant household than for a typical Australian-born household. The poor savings performance of immigrants arises from a consumption gap, rather than an income gap. Even after controlling for household characteristics, we find that savings rates vary by country of origin. The Asian-born household's savings rate is not significantly different from that of the Australian-born, but savings rates of all other overseas birthplace groups are significantly lower. This finding is robust to the alternative measures of savings and model specification. Australia's national savings in 1988-89 would have been approximately A$2.4 billion more if a foreign-born household had saved as much as a typical Australian-born household.

Book excerpt: This article investigates the determinants of saving rates of Australian residents, determines whether the saving behaviour of immigrants is different from that of native-born Australians and if it is affected by their country-of-origin characteristics. Comparison of estimated saving rates for 2006 using Australian longitudinal data reveals that immigrants save less than their native-born counterparts. Amid the determinants, a home country's gross domestic product per capita and old-age dependency ratio are found to be positively correlated, while national household saving rate is negatively correlated, with immigrants' saving rates. The latter finding may be driven by unaccounted remittances or changes in saving habits after immigration.

It has experienced steady growth since the early 1990s and inflation has averaged just 2 percent over the same period. This strong showing marks a departure from the performance of the postwar years, when falling productivity and rising inflation caused Australia's per capita income to slip from one of the highest among OECD countries to merely average. This economic turnaround is explored in this book edited by Anoop Singh, Josh Felman, Ray Brooks, Tim Callen, and Christian Thimann of the Asia and Pacific Department.
