When Frieda and Boffo Clown have a baby, everyone in the circus is over the moon. But there is just one problem: Baby Clown won’t stop crying! Frieda and Boffo try everything: putting on their silliest faces, driving him around in their tiny car. They even try taking off his red nose and big shoes. But that just makes Baby Clown cry more. Can Frieda and Boffo turn his little clown frown upside down in time for the sold-out show? Kara LaReau deftly juggles wit and warmth in this hilarious nod to parental persistence, while Matthew Cordell’s big-top-bright illustrations bring Baby Clown and his circus family to humorously frazzled life. Older siblings, in particular, will step right up to this applause-worthy picture book, joining Baby Clown in many a heartfelt “WAAAAH!”

There is a brass button, a pocketknife, and a bird's feather. There is also a single page torn from a poetry book, and Adam reads the poem over and over. It gradually comes to life, and it shines a healing light of the absurd on Adam's world, transforming his entire outlook on life.

Dan and Brenda Stevens finally planned a night out without the kids and were able to find a babysitter at the last minute. Brenda's friend Karen's daughter Susan happened to be free for the evening because her boyfriend was sick, so instead of being stuck home all night with nothing to do her mother suggested she babysit her friend Brenda's kids and make a little extra money. Susan was happy to earn some easy money for a couple hours. Susan got ready, said goodbye to her mother, and drove on to Steven's house for what she thought would be a quiet night and some easy babysitting money. Instead, it was going to be a night of terror. Susan finally arrived at Steven's house as the rain was pouring down. Susan knocked on Steven's door, and Dan and Brenda greeted her and told her after she put the kids to bed she could watch TV in their bedroom because the TV in the living room wasn't working. Susan said, "No problem," and told them to have a good time, and not to worry about the kids she would take good care of them. The Stevens ran out in the pouring rain to their car and drove to a restaurant that her husband picked out. Susan played a few games with the kids and said, "Well, it's eight o'clock and time for bed. Susan read a bedtime story to the kids and said goodnight to them, turned out their bedroom light then got a soda out of the refrigerator, and went back upstairs to watch TV until the Stevens returned from their dinner date. Susan sat down and turned on the remote to the TV, flipped through the channels, and popped the top of her soda can, and just as she touched her lips on the soda can to take a drink she said to herself, "That's odd what is a creepy looking clown statue doing in their bedroom. It doesn't even look like it belongs here."

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of ground-breaking movement theater performers of the late twentieth century. It explores how the virtuoso stage clowns and mimes drew on all the performing arts to create and star in shows in order to reveal our deepest thoughts and feelings. They ignored taboos and busted boundaries to redefine the relationship between performer and audience, making a theater of kindness—a theater of joy. Complete with over two hundred photos, the book tells how these performers came together at the International Movement Theatre Festivals and reached American audiences with their work. It also details the author’s story, his devotion to, and love of, the art and the artists, and his sometimes-harrowing journey into non-profit management. It offers a peek behind the curtain to describe the process of engaging artists, audiences, funders, and the international press in this mission.

Book excerpt: Becky Kueker thought she had it all, publishing a new book, "Hiding in My Pajamas," three years ago, and launching a national speaking career traveling the country at 75. What more could you ask coming off a two year low after she retired struggling with the emotional stereotypes that deal with retirement and aging. It was not until a complicated surgery requiring six months in a wheelchair and endless rehab, turned her life in a new direction she could never have expected. Fighting fear, depression and the realization that she would once again have to start over, Becky shares her journey facing a new beginning discovering that it's laughter that changes everything. Meeting passionate people who inspired her, chapters are filled with poignant stories from women and men who have proven that aging does not have to define you and new beginnings are possible. Their stories are powerful and highlight the determination it takes to live your best life and what the passage of time means to how capable we are of embracing change. Not being financially prepared for retirement has become a national epidemic. Her chapter, Learning to Live After Retirement, features stories from those who were not aware that not planning was just speculating and rolling the dice on what might be. The shock that their savings will not be sufficient to retain the lifestyle they lived before offers a glimpse of a generation not prepared. Interviewing her husband and other men about retirement and aging highlights the unexpected marital turbulence that finds its way into very personal struggles that no one saw coming. Finding humor every painful step of the way as she learns how to walk again, A Classic in Clown Shoes is a roller coaster ride of emotions resonating with honesty.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to provide a close-up view of the emotional and rewarding experiences of clown-doctors working with hospitalized children. It describes the development of a new program in a pediatric hospital and all the challenges that confront clown-doctors. The book recounts work that takes place over a few months in 1999-2000. Most of the children that are described had been diagnosed with leukemia and other serious forms of cancer. They were hospitalized often and ran the risk of death. This book is a tale of love and humor and of dealing with great traumas and tragedy. It tells of the immense compassion and the amazing resilience of individuals in the most stressful and debilitating of circumstances. It is a small window looking onto what it is to be human with all our strengths and frailties and of how complete strangers can become bonded to one another through laughter and pain. The story presented here is based upon real case studies annotated with occasional commentaries to put these experiences into perspective. Above all else this book is a celebration and an homage to all the children, their parents and care-givers who have shared their lives with clown-doctors in many countries around the world. The Clown-Doctor Chronicles is written to 'speak' to people of all ages: men and women; professionals, trades people and homemakers in cities, towns and villages; for laughter and illness know no boundaries. It will be of particular interest to parents, artists in hospitals and anybody working with children (health care professionals, educators, psychologists).

Book excerpt: When danger rolls into town I have one eye open--my most private eye--while the other is focusing on a fiery fury of a lady. Surrounded by more underworld celebrities than San Quentin and Sing Sing combined, can you believe that I was the King of Clowns? That's right, but I thought my role was to rescue any poor damsel in distress. Too bad that maiden wasn't planning to rescue me from the next social event planned in town--my funeral--and it was up to me to crash the party while keeping cool below the belt. Kill the Clown is the 24th book in the Shell Scott Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
