Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large Hot Dry Rock resource has been recognized in northern California. It underlies the region extending NE of The Geysers to N of the City of Clearlake. The long-range productive potential is thousands of megawatts. The geothermal resource is heterogeneous. There are two mechanisms of heat flow occurring together. One is fluid transport, up natural zones of permeability, to outflows as surface springs. The other is conductive heat flow through impermeable rock. The temperature isotherms are thought to be nearly level surfaces, for example, the 300°C isotherm is at about 8000 ft depth, with spikes'' or ridges'' occurring around narrow zones of fluid flow. While there is accessible heat at shallow depth in the naturally permeable rocks, the really substantial resource is in the impermeable rock. This is the HDR resource. The potential reservoir rocks are Franciscan greywackes and greenstones. Recorded drilling problems appear to be mainly due to intersection with serpentinites or to the effects of stimulation, so are potentially avoidable. Greywacke is favoured as a reservoir rock, and is expected to fail by brittle fracture. The water shortages in Northern California appear to be surmountable. Leakoff rates are expected to be low. Sewerage water may be available for fill and makeup. There is a possibility of combining HDR heat power production with sewerage disposal. To establish the first HDR producer in Northern California offers challenges in technology transfer. Two significant challenges will be creation of dispersed permeability in a greywacke reservoir, and pressure management in the vicinity of naturally permeable zones. A successful demonstration of HDR production technology will improve the long-term prospects for the geothermal power industry in California. 29 refs., 20 figs., 4 tabs.

Book excerpt: This edited volume is based on the best papers accepted for presentation during the 1st Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-1), Tunisia 2018. The book is of interest to all researchers in the fields of petroleum engineering, reservoir engineering and petroleum geochemistry. The MENA region accounts for more than 50 percent of the world's hydrocarbon reserves. Despite being the largest oil and gas producer of the world, the MENA countries face routine problems regarding petroleum engineering, reservoir modelling and production optimization. This volume offers an overview of the latest information and ideas regarding reservoir engineering, petrophysical engineering, petroleum system modelling, non-conventional energy resources and environmental impact of oil production. Main topics include: 1. Advances in petrophysical characterization of reservoir rocks2. Enhanced oil recovery methods 3. Advances in petroleum exploration and management 4. Evaluation of hydrocarbon source potential and petroleum system modeling5. Non-conventional energy resources

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Meisen, Past President, Global Energy Network Institute, asked in 1997, “What if there was an existing, viable technology, that when developed to its highest potential could increase everyone’s standard of living, cut fossil fuel demand and the resultant pollution?” After 23 years of sustained effort by the global scientific community, this is becoming a reality. The technology to extract heat from granite has been revolutionized in the last few years. The classical method of creating fracture networks by hydrofracturing is being replaced by a closed-loop method where fluids are not in contact with the hot granite. Supercritical CO2 is replacing water as a circulating fluid. Certainly, the future energy road is going to be led by highly radiogenic granites. While hydrothermal sources are site-specific and have their limitations, EGS can be initiated anywhere on earth. EGS is removing all such obstacles and, in the future, will provide uninterrupted electricity for all. Energy-deficient countries can have surplus electricity; water-stressed countries can have a perennial freshwater supply; and countries can become food-secure and rise above poverty levels. Countries need not depend on energy imports and can independently evolve into carbon neutral or low carbon societies. The contributions made by experts will help researchers and investors to close the energy demand and supply gap in the very near future by tapping the unlimited energy of the Earth. Opportunities available for investors in Turkey are well documented with field, geophysical, and geochemical data and information on the energy generating capacity of the granite intrusive spread over a cumulative area of 6,910 km2 in western Anatolia. With the signing of the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) by several countries during the December 2015 CoP 21 (Conference of Parties) summit in Paris, countries are obliged to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing the footprint of renewable energy in the primary source mix. Information provided in this book will lead the way to establishing a clean energy future for millions of people for sustainable development and help to mitigate crises arising due to food, water, and energy shortage issues. Academic and research institutes will benefit to a large extent from the expertise of the top contributors in this book. This information provided in this book will help to lay the foundation for super-hot EGS research in future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible new textbook provides a thorough introduction toall aspects of groundwater systems and their management. Usingstraightforward language and analogies to everyday experiences, itexplains the origins, nature, and behavior of subsurface waterwithout resorting to complicated mathematics. Groundwater in the Environment draws on case studies andcutting-edge research from around the world, giving a uniqueinsight into groundwater occurring in a wide range of differentclimate zones and geological settings. This book: provides a robust, practical introduction to groundwaterquality, and a succinct summary of modern remedial technologies forpolluted groundwaters explores how groundwater fits into the wider naturalenvironment, especially in relation to freshwater ecosystems considers the vulnerability of groundwater systems and theeffects of pollution, climate change, land-use change, andoverexploitation examines human dependence on water and the effect that this hason groundwater systems presents vivid examples of geohazards associated with groundwaters explains the whys and wherefores of groundwater modeling examines competing philosophies of groundwater management, making the case for approaches which take social, economic andecological issues into account. Goundwater in the Environment provides an up-to-date,essential introduction for undergraduate students of environmentalsciences, geography and geology. It will also be invaluable toprofessionals working in various fields of natural resourcemanagement who need accessible information on groundwater but whoare reluctant to read conventional texts full of mathematicalnotation. For practicing hydrogeologists and engineers withoutformal training in freshwater ecology, this book provides a `crashcourse' in the new frontiers of groundwater management.
