Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different kinds of animals have adopted a parasitic life style on the skin and gills of marine and freshwater fishes, including protozoans, flatworms, leeches, a range of crustaceans and even some vertebrates (lampreys). There is a parasitic barnacle, described first in the 19th century by Charles Darwin, fish lice that change sex and bivalve molluscs parasitic only when young. This book explores for the first time in one volume, the remarkable biology of these little known and frequently bizarre animals. The following closely interwoven themes are considered for each group of parasites: how they find their hosts, how they attach, feed and reproduce, the damage they inflict and how the host’s immune system retaliates. Based on the British fauna, but extending where appropriate to examples from North America, Australia and elsewhere, the book is essential reading, not just for the professional parasitologist, but also for anyone interested in fishes and in this neglected field of British natural history. With the enquiring naturalist in mind, terms and concepts are explained as they arise, backed up by a glossary, and the text is liberally illustrated. An introductory chapter on fish biology sets the scene and common fish names are used throughout, as well as scientific names.

Book excerpt: This is the sequel to the World of Plankton, the first part of Sir Alister Hardy's great survey of life in the Open Sea. It in fact deals with everything in the sea that depends on plankton. This edition is exclusive to newnaturalists.com This is the sequel to the World of Plankton, the first part of Sir Alister Hardy's great survey of life in the Open Sea. It in fact deals with everything in the sea that depends on plankton. Once more it is the work of an enthusiast, written with the same lucidity and the same delightful style, both informal and informative, that was so highly praised when Part One was published. Indeed, to quote the Manchester Guardian, 'the author is a complete master of his subject and no comparable book has been published in this generation'. In addition to writing of the marine fish of our waters as living creatures taking their part in the general community of the sea, Sir Alister also deals with the fisheries as part of that general natural history. He deals with the animals on the sea bed, so important in supplying food for the bottom living fish, and with fish parasites. Whales and reptiles come within the book's scope, and there is a sketch of the development of fisheries research. The book ends with a discussion of the future development in the fisheries as a result of advances in technology and research. As in Part One, the 16 pages of remarkable colour illustrations are all from the author's own paintings and the 68 black and white photographs are mainly by Douglas P. Wilson.

A comprehensive approach has been made to cover all the progressive areas of parasitic disease management starting from identification of the parasites, basic status of diseases towards various approaches to diagnose, prevent and control disease conditions. The parasitic problems of different fishes, like indigenous fishes, exotic fishes of commercial importance, sport fishes and ornamental fishes have been addressed to give a complete parasitic disease profile on total fishery. The behavior of the hosts, interrelationship of soil and water with parasitized hosts, and mechanism of parasitic attachment are important aspects of the concerned book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copepod Parasites of Fresh-Water Fishes and Their Economic Relations to Mussel Glochidia The specimens and other material were derived from several sources. First, the work Of the biological station involves the handling of large numbers of fish, and several of the regular staff, notably Mr. H. W. Clark, Mr. T. Surber, and Dr. A. D. Howard, have saved such parasitic copepods as they found while examining the gills for glochidia. These were generously turned over to the present author, who had also accumulated a large number of Specimens during the surveys of the mussel fauna of various regions of the United States under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries. These collections were augmented during the present investigations by a careful examination of all the preserved gills of fish in the possession of the biological station, of the gills of live fish caught by the regular seining crew or brought to the station for glochidial infection, and of a large number of dead fish caught by local fishermen. Book excerpt: Information on the parasites of Canadian fishes published between the years 1978 and 1993, inclusive, is assembled as Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists. The 925 named species of parasites are reported on 292 species of Canadian fishes. The Parasite-Host list is organized on a taxonomic basis and identifies for each species its habitat (freshwater, marine, or brackish), site of occurence in its host(s), species host(s), known geographic distribution within Canadian waters, and the published source for each host and localty record. The Host-Parasite list is organized according to the taxonomy of the hosts and is accompanied by data on the known Canadian distribution of the parasites. For both the Parasite-Host and Host-Parasite lists, a "Remarks" section containing explanatory comments concerning systematics, nomenclature, and notes on other specific items is included as warranted. In addition to listing the cited references, as supplentary list of references is included to cover other Canadian literature on fish parasites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish are a unique group which harbour some 30,000 species of helminths that do not occur in other vertebrates. This book deals specifically with parasitic worms of fish. It covers every aspect of their biology including identification, life-cycles, hostparasite relationships and ecology. It discusses approaches to studying parasitic worm infections, preference of species for particular host species, preference for dwelling in certain organs and tissues, biogeography, seasonality of infections and how parasites have evolved in parallel with their hosts. The book concludes with discussions of fish worms causing diseases in nature and in fish-farms.
