Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mortality over the twentieth century in Australia' is a comprehensive analysis of the causes of death from 1907 to 2000. Although it is well known that life expectancy for Australians increased over the last century, analyses presented in this report show how the changes in the causes of death help to explain why we are living longer. This report describes patterns and trends in mortality over the century, highlighting the great successes but also some areas where improvements are still clearly needed.

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite improvements in the health of Australians over the last century, large mortality inequalities continue to exist between population sub-groups. This report is a statistical reference source that documents mortality inequalities by sex, geographic region, area, socioeconomic disadvantage, occupation, and country of birth. The report examines the nature and extent of mortality inequalities among infants and children, young adults, working aged adults and older persons during 1998-2000, and where possible, for the period 1985-1987 to 1998-2000.
Book Synopsis Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries by : National Research Council
Download or read book Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 25 years, life expectancy at age 50 in the United States has been rising, but at a slower pace than in many other high-income countries, such as Japan and Australia. This difference is particularly notable given that the United States spends more on health care than any other nation. Concerned about this divergence, the National Institute on Aging asked the National Research Council to examine evidence on its possible causes. According to Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries, the nation's history of heavy smoking is a major reason why lifespans in the United States fall short of those in many other high-income nations. Evidence suggests that current obesity levels play a substantial part as well. The book reports that lack of universal access to health care in the U.S. also has increased mortality and reduced life expectancy, though this is a less significant factor for those over age 65 because of Medicare access. For the main causes of death at older ages-cancer and cardiovascular disease-available indicators do not suggest that the U.S. health care system is failing to prevent deaths that would be averted elsewhere. In fact, cancer detection and survival appear to be better in the U.S. than in most other high-income nations, and survival rates following a heart attack also are favorable. Explaining Divergent Levels of Longevity in High-Income Countries identifies many gaps in research. For instance, while lung cancer deaths are a reliable marker of the damage from smoking, no clear-cut marker exists for obesity, physical inactivity, social integration, or other risks considered in this book. Moreover, evaluation of these risk factors is based on observational studies, which-unlike randomized controlled trials-are subject to many biases.

Download or read book Rural, Regional, and Remote Health written by and published by . This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report updates and builds on findings from the 1998 AIHW report, Health in Rural and Remote Australia, which identified higher death rates outside major metropolitan areas. However, it has been unclear how much of these higher death rates are due to rural health issues, or Indigenous health issues. This report largely resolves this uncertainty by controlling for Indigenous status and describing for each region: differences in death rates; trends in mortality over time; and how many more deaths occurred than were expected (if lower major cities rates had applied in each region).
Book Synopsis Epidemiology of Healthcare-Associated Infections in Australia by : Ramon Z. Shaban
Download or read book Epidemiology of Healthcare-Associated Infections in Australia written by Ramon Z. Shaban and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endorsed by the Australasian College for Infection Prevention and Control (ACIPC) ACIPC is the peak body for infection prevention and control professionals in the Australasian region. Healthcare-associated Infections (HAIs) are a major threat to patient safety and the quality of healthcare globally. Despite this, Australia does not have a nationally coordinated program for the surveillance and reporting of HAIs. Epidemiology of Healthcare-associated Infections in Australia is Australia's first peer-reviewed, evidence-based assessment of the epidemiology of HAIs using publicly available data from hospital-acquired complications (HACs), state-based surveillance systems and peer-reviewed and grey literature sources. This important work has been compiled by some of Australia's leading infection control professionals and researchers. It will build national consensus on definitions, surveillance methodology and reporting of the incidence of HAIs. In doing so, it provides hospitals and those working in infection prevention and control an opportunity to benchmark and evaluate interventions to reduce infections and ensure transparency on reporting methods that will strengthen Australia's efforts to prevent and control HAIs. Here is a great article published in Sydney Morning Herald on the publication of Epidemiology of Healthcare-associated infections in Australia. - Collated publicly available HAI surveillance definitions from jurisdictions across Australia - Collated publicly available national HACs HAI data derived from the associated surveillance programs - Identification of the gaps in both publicly available HAI data from different sources and the lack of publicly available HAI surveillance data in one serialised title - Supporting video summarising key content
