Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horse gear must fit well to best function with the horse’s body and movement. Although Horseman’s Guide to Tack and Equipment details available options for individual pieces of equipment, the book isn’t a buying guide for purchasing equipment, but a usage guide explaining how to attain the best riding results with various items of gear. Each chapter addresses a piece of equipment, such as a saddle, or family of items, such as ground-working equipment; provides an expert opinion on how best to adjust the equipment for a horse’s build and range of motion; and provides, if applicable, event-specific considerations when using that equipment. Equipment care and common equipment-fitting mistakes are addressed in sidebars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his welcome to this chronicle of Western Horseman’s 75 years, current Publisher Darrell Dodds writes, “On the following pages, former Western Horseman Publisher Randy Witte has authored the most comprehensive history of the magazine that’s ever been written.” Even more important: “Witte also recognized that a magazine, when done well, can be magical in its ability to educate, inform, entertain and inspire.” That belief obviously focuses on the stock-horse industry. But the passion to deliver the “magic” has come from staffers themselves, horse owners as invested in the western lifestyle as the magazine’s readership. Among the magicians: Witte’s larger-than-life predecessor, Dick Spencer, and longtime Editor Pat Close, who rode 40 years for the brand, and many others on the magazine staff. All, Witte says, contributed to “take the readers to places they’d never go, meet interesting characters they’d never heard of and learn things they’d never imagined.” That the magazine continues into its 75th year is testament that throughout its history Western Horseman successfully has pursued these objectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2004, when Craig Cameron’s book Ride Smart was printed, the clinician’s popularity has only grown. With his 2010 championship at the prestigious Road to the Horse, he gained even more followers to his no-nonsense approach to training and riding. Cameron’s easygoing teaching style, beloved by his students, is now found in this follow-up to his popular first book. In Ride Smarter, readers learn to further develop their horsemanship skills and continue on the road to becoming true horsemen and -women. Cameron continues to build on some of the topics covered in his first volume, and adds valuable information that riders of all levels of expertise can use in improving their riding experiences. Early chapters in this second book talk about the qualities that make a good horseman, and the responsibilities each person has to his or her horse. Cameron gives tips on selecting the right horse, making a smart purchase and knowing when it’s time to change horses. He discusses caring for your horse at home and on the road, something he’s familiar with after logging thousands of miles with his horses in tow. In Ride Smarter’s later chapters, Cameron addresses the advantages of different bits, and then delves into the use of cues and how important they are. He also discusses the fine art of correction, and helps readers understand when discipline is necessary, and offers tips on understanding and riding the different gaits. One of Cameron’s goals when training is to develop a horse that does anything the horseman asks, and in one chapter Cameron relates how to create what he calls the “brave horse.” He then discusses the advantages of cross-training between the arena and the trail, and patterns and obstacles that you can use to advance both your and your horse’s skills. In his clinics, Cameron answers numerous questions about problem horses, and Chapter 15 addresses the most frequently discussed problems and the clinician’s approach to fixing each one. Cameron also takes a humorous look at some “people problems” that your horse might tell you about if he could talk. And finally, this top hand talks about setting goals for your horse and your horsemanship, and how valuable having that sense of direction can be. As in Cameron’s first book, chapters in this second book, Ride Smarter, include a “True Story,” a personal anecdote about a memorable experience; “Here’s How” with simple and practical training tips; and “A Better Way,” which provides workable approaches to common problems encountered in achieving horsemanship and horse-handling goals. Anyone who has been to Cameron’s clinics can appreciate the straightforward instruction the Texas horseman offers. Those who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Craig Cameron in person get a good look at the training techniques and coaching skills that have earned him a reputation as the “Cowboy’s Clinician.” Ride Smarter helps readers advance in the adventure of horsemanship.

Book excerpt: Roy Rogers' golden palomino, Trigger, was the perhaps the most famous horse in film--more popular than the man himself among certain fans. In its expanded second edition, this detailed look at the animals and men who created the legend of "the smartest horse in the movies" examines the life story of the original Trigger--and his doubles, particularly Little Trigger, the extraordinary trick horse. Movies in which Trigger appeared without Rogers are discussed. More than 200 photographs (90 new to this edition) and 30,000 words of additional material are included, covering unresolved aspects of Trigger's story, controversies surrounding the sale of the Roy Roger's Museum collection and the fate of his legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large part of American history was written from the seat of a military saddle. While the United States Army used horse-mounted fighting men from the very beginning, it was in the nineteenth century - from the decade before the Mexican War through the Indian wars - that the dashing cavalry units captured the American imagination. The horse solders remained part of the army until 1943, when the military converted them to mechanized forces. Even so, West Point did not tear down its stables and abandon its riding-proficiency requirement until 1947. The long retention of the cavalry was due to affection for the memory of the glorious role of the cavalry in American military history.

Drawing together work by respected scholars in Australia, the US, the UK and Canada, it explores social and cultural meanings of drug use and analyses law enforcement and public health frameworks and objectives related to drug policy and service provision. In doing so, it addresses key questions of drug use and addiction through interdisciplinary, predominantly sociological and criminological, perspectives, mapping and building on recent conceptual and empirical advances in the field. These include questions of materiality and agency, the social constitution of disease and neo-liberal subjectivity and responsibility. This book provides a fresh scholarly perspective on drug use and addiction by collecting top quality original work, written by a mix of international leaders in the field and emerging scholars working at the cutting edge of research.

Book excerpt: India and the Indian ways of life in the new century are freshly and comprehensively overviewed in this volume. This one-stop resource enables students and other interested readers to begin to understand the vast country with its population of one billion people, representing hundreds of social groups with more than 100 languages spoken. Henderson provides expert insight into a cross-section of society. The caste system, Hinduism, the sari, women's roles, and a dazzling array of festivals are just some of the facets of the culture and customs explained. Although the volume primarily focuses on contemporary India, Henderson's knowledgeable narrative incorporates the progression of culture from the earliest civilization to the nuclear weapons debate. There is no other general, in-depth, up-to-date reference that provides the coverage on the land, people, and history; religion; world view; art and literature; landscape and architecture; food and dress; women, marriage, and family; festivals and leisure activities; music and dance; and social customs and lifestyles. Numerous photos, a chronology, and glossary complement the narrative.
