Book excerpt: This book is an account and accumulation of information I have learned on my journey from the beginning to today. It also includes my testimony (how and why I came to Christ) and stories showing what happened to me afterward while journeying with God on my path of life. It talks about the steps I took (I believe the steps God wants all of us to follow) in becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. It also talks to how I put that training into my everyday life. The most important aspect of this book in weaving my story throughout it is that it gives the reader my reasons why and shows the how-to everyone asks about. It will show the reader why the subtitle is "Conquering Your Fear of Change." I have been walking with the Lord for over thirty years (more than half of my life). I can now say that through my experiences, God truly loves me and has shown that to me countless times and that I trust him fully. I am now able to, every day, surrender my selfish will over to him and seek his guidance and direction (his will) for my life, no matter what the surrounding circumstances of life, to know that he loves me, wants me to be successful as a disciple of Jesus Christ, and is in control of life. I also know that all my prayers are being answered in his way and his timing. I may not ever see the result of my prayer, but I know he will answer each one. Don't you want that blessed assurance in your life? That hope to be able to change from who you were to who you are now and truly love yourself? Don't you want to feel that peace that passes all understanding each and every day along with the joy only God can offer? You can. Yes, even you can! So, come join me as you visit my journey. Hopefully, you learn God's truth so you can compare it to the world's lies and decide for yourself which you will follow.

Book excerpt: While I Was Yet Sinning is a compilation of short stories and lessons on how to be an effective Christian while yet a sinner. So many of us find ourselves reflecting on our failures and deeming ourselves unqualified to speak Christ to those whom we live and work with every day. While I Was Yet Sinning is reality-based, with stories of people who have gone through much, failed, and been challenged to continue delivering Christ to others. Their stories are Scripture-based and easy to read and apply. Just as Jesus empowered sinners to reach a fallen world while he walked on Earth, he now empowers us to continue the mission of bringing others to Him. For this mission, he forgives us as we come to him and ask. None of us will be perfect until we are in His presence, nor will those around us. While I Was Yet Sinning is a work in and about His grace.

Book excerpt: In the small, vibrant city of Port Harcourt, nestled along the banks of the Bonny River, a young boy named Hope Etim gazed out at the world with wide, curious eyes. His heart was filled with innocence and wonder, unaware of the challenges and hardships that lay ahead. Hope was just a child when he lost his father, a tragedy that would shape the course of his life and propel him on a journey of triumph against all odds. Hope's mother, Ruth, was a pillar of strength and resilience. As a single mother, she bore the weight of providing for her son and nurturing his dreams. Despite their meager means, Ruth instilled in Hope a deep-rooted belief that he was destined for greatness, that he had the power to rise above their circumstances and create a better future. The loss of his father at such a tender age left a void in Hope's heart-a void that could only be filled with the unwavering love and guidance of his mother. Ruth worked tirelessly, taking on multiple jobs to ensure that her son had a roof over his head, food on the table, and the opportunity to receive an education. She sacrificed her own dreams and aspirations, pouring all her love and resources into giving Hope the chance to succeed. Growing up in a humble home, Hope witnessed the struggles and hardships faced by his mother and the countless other families in their community. The harsh realities of poverty and inequality were starkly apparent, but Hope refused to let despair consume him. Instead, he embraced his mother's teachings of hope, perseverance, and the power of education. As Hope entered the halls of school, he discovered a thirst for knowledge that burned within him. Despite the lack of resources and proper infrastructure, he devoured every book he could get his hands on, immersing himself in a world of imagination and possibility. With each passing day, his dreams grew bolder, his aspirations reaching far beyond the boundaries of his humble surroundings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is economic development the best hope for the world's poor? A great many individuals, governments and organizations think the obvious answer is 'Yes’, the only issue being about how development can best be achieved. In recent decades some powerful voices from economics and anthropology have taken issue with this widespread consensus, and this book aims to add a philosophical dimension to the debate. Just who are ‘the poor’, and what should they hope for? Is the best hope of having a worthwhile life any different for the poor than it is for the rich? Drawing on Aristotle, Bacon, Hume, Reid, Marx and Nietzsche, as well as contemporary authors such as Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum and Tim Ingold, Gordon Graham argues in favour of replacing quantitative assessments of wealth and poverty with a qualitative account of the ways in which human lives can be enriched or impoverished. The final chapter explores the connection between economic and political development and religious ways of thinking.

Book excerpt: In this compelling, heartwarming novel from New York Times bestselling author Marie Bostwick, one woman finds new purpose in a new phase of life . . . “Whatever comes your way, find the happiness in it.” Hope Carpenter received that advice from her mother decades ago. Now, with their four children grown, Hope and her husband, Rick, are suddenly facing an uncertain future, after a forced retirement strains both their savings and their marriage. Seeking inspiration and a financial boost, Hope gets a job teaching crafts to inmates at a local women’s prison. At first, Hope feels foolish and irrelevant, struggling to relate to women whose choices seem so different from her own. But with time, and the encouragement of the prison chaplain, she begins to discover common ground with the inmates, in their worries about their children and families, their fear of having failed those who need them. Just like her, they want to make something of themselves, but believe it might be impossible. Embarking on an ambitious quilting project, Hope and her students begin to bond. Together, piece by piece, they learn to defy expectations—their own and others’—and to see that it’s never too late to stitch together a life that, even in its imperfections, is both surprising and beautiful. Praise for Marie Bostwick and Her Novels “Reading Marie Bostwick is like wrapping yourself up in a warm, hand-crafted quilt.” —Debbie Macomber, #1 New York Times bestselling author “It takes great skill to write a heartwarming story about grief, and Bostwick proves she is up to the task. . . . A great addition to any women’s-fiction collection.” —Booklist “Beautiful, thought-provoking, tragic and redeeming, The Second Sister is a feel-good goldmine.” —USAToday.com
