Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac and His Figures of Speech It has further been necessary to limit the kind of figures studied. As has already been indicated, the term figure is used in its most current acceptation, that is as including similes and metaphors, or in other words any expressed or implied comparison between objects or acts which belong to different categories or exist under different circumstances. If an inanimate object or a lower order of life is compared to man, we have a special form personification. The other rhetorical figures such such as apostrophe, interrogation, and even metonomy and synecdoche, are mere modes of expression or linguistic conveniences. Hyperbole and antithesis do express a certain attitude of mind, and we find them frequently employed by Balzac, but the principle back of the creation of the individual figures of either type is always the same, and nothing could be gained by a detailed study the differ ence between two hyperboles for instance is merely one of degree. Book Synopsis Balzac's Comedy of Words by : Martin Kanes
Download or read book Balzac's Comedy of Words written by Martin Kanes and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Balzac's work has been much studied, practically nothing has been written on his use of linguistic concepts. Applying a new approach, this perceptive book demonstrates that the theme and theory of language were central to Balzac's fiction. In considering how the novelist was influenced by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century speculation on language, Martin Kanes traces the development of Balzac's own linguistic ideas from his early to his later writings. Originally published in 1976. Sandars "Honore de Balzac: His Life and Writings" is a complete biography that delves into the lifestyles and literary contributions of one of the maximum influential French novelists of the nineteenth century. Sandars provides readers with a detailed exploration of Balzac's private and professional adventure. The biography begins with the aid of chronicling Balzac's early life, upbringing, and the formative studies that fashioned his worldview. It delves into his literary ambitions and the demanding situations he faced in setting up himself as a writer. Balzac's voracious urge for food for literature and his interactions with other distinguished figures of his time are thoroughly examined, providing readers insights into the highbrow milieu of 19th-century France. Sandars meticulously lines Balzac's literary career, imparting analyses of his predominant works, which includes the sprawling and interconnected collection of novels called "La Comédie Humaine." The biography sheds light on Balzac's creative process, affects, and the thematic richness of his writings. It also explores the author's relationships, personal struggles, and the effect of his works at the literary landscape. Balzac's determination to shooting the nuances of French society is a focal point, and Sandars skillfully weaves together the threads of his life and fiction.
