Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the latest advances and perspectives in hydrosilylation, with a focus on new organometallic catalysts and their mechanistic aspects. Hydrosilylation is the reaction of ≡SiH with carbon-carbon, carbon-heteroatom or heteroatom-heteroatom bonds and is the most fundamental and elegant method for laboratory and industrial synthesis of organosilicon molecular and macromolecular compounds. Yet these reactions do require a catalyst, for which initially homogeneous noble metal catalyst, mainly platinum, rhodium, iridium or ruthenium were used. However the high prices, metallic residues of these valuable catalysts as well as issues with product purification, did increase the interest in developing new catalysts. Noteworthy in this regard are the recently developed hydrosilylation reactions using catalysts based on earth-abundant transition metals (for example Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and heterogeneous catalysts presented here. This volume of Topics in Organometallic Chemistry is written for scientists interested in silicon chemistry and its catalytic aspects, but can also be used as valuable handbook for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students working with organometallic chemistry, catalysis as well as synthesis of fine chemicals.

Book excerpt: In the last decade there have been numerous advances in the area of rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation, such as highly selective catalysts of industrial importance, new insights into mechanisms of the reaction, very selective asymmetric catalysts, in situ characterization and application to organic synthesis. The views on hydroformylation which still prevail in the current textbooks have become obsolete in several respects. Therefore, it was felt timely to collect these advances in a book. The book contains a series of chapters discussing several rhodium systems arranged according to ligand type, including asymmetric ligands, a chapter on applications in organic chemistry, a chapter on modern processes and separations, and a chapter on catalyst preparation and laboratory techniques. This book concentrates on highlights, rather than a concise review mentioning all articles in just one line. The book aims at an audience of advanced students, experts in the field, and scientists from related fields. The didactic approach also makes it useful as a guide for an advanced course.

Book excerpt: This Proceedings contains plenary lectures and selected poster communications spanning the entire field of catalysis --- from catalysis by protons to catalysis by multinuclear clusters and ultra-disperse particles. It includes discussion of the recent results of fundamental research conducted at the juncture between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. New ideas, based on modern physical and quantum-chemical methods, and concerning the mechanism of formation and functioning of active sites of catalysts are suggested. It is shown how the cyclic change of atomic distribution in the active site occurs during catalytic transformations. In addition, the Proceedings report new data on methods of ''assembling'' molecularly organized catalytic systems and on the mechanisms of their action. The various problems such as the effect of strong metal--support interaction, migration of atoms in active sites, and design of catalytic properties of substances are also widely discussed. Similarities and differences in mechanisms of action of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are considered, using as examples CO hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis of saturated hydrocarbons, selective hydrogenation and oxidation of olefins, metathesis and polymerization of olefins, hydrosilylation and hydroformylation of olefins, etc.

It focuses on the chemically induced effects associated with bonded surface species that cause catalyst activity decline -- and in some cases a change in catalyst specificity. In addition, this volume examines poisoning of dispersed metal catalysts ... the thermodynamics of sulfur-metal and carbon-metal interactions ... model poisoning reactions on single crystals ... deactivation in petroleum refining and petrochemical processes ... coking of metal catalysts ... and more. The new approaches and solutions to catalyst deactivation and poisoning presented in this guide are invaluable to all heterogeneous catalysis specialists, including chemical and petroleum engineers, and surface, synthetic, physical, and industrial chemists. This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentially molecular supported catalysts were synthesized by using organometallic complexes as precursors, such as Rh(CO)2(acac), Rh(C2H4)2(acac), Ir(CO)2(acac), and Ir(C2H4)2(acac) (where acac is acetylacetonate) and HY zeolite as a support. A goal was to obtain highly uniform solid catalysts with well-defined structures. Characterization by X-ray absorption (XAS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopies confirmed the anchoring of the metal to the support with a high degree of uniformity. IR and 29Si and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra characterize the presence of amorphous regions in the zeolite, and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) identifies these amorphous regions, where iridium is more susceptible to aggregation than in the crystalline regions. Treatment of Ir(CO)2/HY zeolite with C2H4 and H2 at room temperature led to a family of species which includes Ir(CO)2, Ir(CO)(C2H4), Ir(CO)(C2H4)2, Ir(CO)(C2H5) and, tentatively, Ir(CO)(H). The identification of the species is based on XAS and IR spectra (including spectra of samples made with isotopically labeled ligands, 13CO and D2O) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic performance of isostructural rhodium and iridium species incorporating CO as a ligand was measured for the ethylene conversion; the CO not only acts as an inhibitor but it also as a probe molecule providing information about the electronic properties of the metal and of the species present during reaction. When isostructural rhodium and iridium diethylene species are bonded near each other on HY zeolite, the iridium complexes alter the selectivity of rhodium by spilling over hydrogen that hinders the interaction between ethylene and the acidic sites of the zeolite that act in concert with the rhodium, causing it to favor ethylene hydrogenation over dimerization. All these results show how structurally simple solid catalysts can be used to facilitate fundamental understanding of catalysts and their performance.

Book excerpt: With an enormous velocity, olefin polymerization has expanded to one of the most significant fields in polymers since the first industrial use about 50 years ago. In 2005, 100 million tons of polyolefins were produced - the biggest part was catalyzed by metallorganic compounds. The Hamburg Macromolecular Symposium 2005 with the title "Olefin Polymerization" involved topics such as new catalysts and cocatalysts, kinetics, mechanism and polymer reaction engineering, synthesis of special polymers, and characterization of polyolefins. The conference combined scientists from different disciplines to discuss latest research results of polymers and to offer each other the possibility of cooperation. This is reflected in this volume, which contains invited lectures and selected posters presented at the symposium.
