Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy in Homoeopathy: Addressed to the Medical Profession and to the General Reader In this first paper I shall suggest what I think might prove a means toward the establishment of the relation between patient and physician - the State and the Medical Profession - upon a basis more rational than commonly obtains. In a rational basis for this relation, or for anything else, there must be that which appeals to the reason. A medical man is (or should be), because of his education and experience, better able than his patient to apply principles in medical practice, and to judge of evidence in medical questions; but education, experience and evidence are not reason, and as to the reasonableness of theories upon which practice is based the patient may be as competent to judge as is his physician. A very common thing is for one graduated from a col lege where homeopathy is not taught, to enter upon practice a confirmed opponent of homeopathy - a system of which he has acquired none but most superficial impressions. This statement is abundantly illustrated in An Address to Some Students in a N on-h omeopathic Medical College contained in this book. The young gentlemen asking these questions were within a few weeks of graduation. I have not had the pleasure of further acquaintance with any of them, but the presumption is that within a few weeks of formulating their questions they had assumed relations in medical socie ties which, to say the least, did not conduce to any further knowledge of homeopathy. To graduates of old-school colleges who feel that they lack satisfactory knowledge of what homeopathy really is, I commend this book confident of its adequacy to their needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Homœopathy, Its Origin; Its Conflicts: With an Appendix on the Present State of University Medicine The history of homoeopathy is the indictment of the- medical profession. A physician distinguished above his fellows for his services to medicine, chemistry and pharmacology, endowed with quite a phenomenal talent for ancient and modern languages, and well read in all the medical lore of past times, after mature thought and at a ripe age, announces to the profession that, as the result of years of arduous experiment, investigation and reflection, he believes he has discovered a therapeutic rule which will enable us to find the remedies for diseases with greater certainty and precision than can be effected by any of the methods hitherto taught. The reception which this announcement met with, and which was given to all Hahnemann's subsequent efforts to give certainty and scientific accuracy to therapeutics, is described in the following pages, and forms one of the most melancholy and deplorable episodes in the history of medicine. Homoeopathy having had its origin in Germany, and its founder having spent his long life chiefly in that country, it is natural to expect that the historical events of homoeopathy have occurred chiefly, at all events primarily, in Germany. Hahnemann sactive life was carried on in Germany, and his works were written in German or in Latin, which in his early days was the language often employed by medical and scientific authors.
