Book excerpt: Are we alone in the universe? This is a question that we are unable to answer today, however, in the past, the answer to this question was "no". We had brothers that were not extraterrestrials, but instead Neanderthals. Contrary to the image that we commonly have of them, they were just as human as us, the Homo sapiens, but they were stronger and had larger brains. Their extinction is still a mystery. This book tells the story of Wallace Vidal, a young librarian who, lost in his own existence, accidentally travels through time and is caught - in the future - by Neanderthals. Now, his objectives are to escape and to understand what caused our society to collapse, all while desperately trying to reverse his mistakes in this future that he doesn't understand. To do this, he needs to survive on a long journey, where he'll need to rely on the help of all those that he meets, be they Neanderthals or Sapiens. With a flowing narrative and fast-paced dialogues, Homo tempus is a futuristic dystopian novel that is based on the most recent paleontological studies. Ideas from contemporary philosophers and primitive symbolisms are used to portray the human learning cycles that are needed during life and the consequences that ignoring them brings, both for the individual and for society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. His most ambitious achievement was his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint. He believed that mainstream Rabbinical Judaism had rejected the Septuagint as invalid scriptural texts, due to Hellenistic mistranslations. Jerome’s numerous biblical, ascetical, monastic and theological works went on to have a profound influence in the early Middle Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the ancient world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This eBook presents Jerome’s collected works, with illustrations, introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Books I-V of De Civitate Dei , Augustine rejects the claim that worship of the pagan gods had brought success in this life, and in Books VI-X, the prospect of a happy afterlife. In Books XI-XII, the seventh volume in Peter Walsh's series, Augustine turns from attack to defence, for at this point he initiates his apology for the Christian faith. Books XI and XII document the initial phase of the rise of the two cities, the city of God and the city of this world, beginning with the creation of the world and the human race. In Book XI, Augustine rejects the theories of Aristotle, Plato and the Epicureans on the creation of the universe and addresses the creation of angels, Satan, the role of the holy Trinity and the importance of numberology in the Genesis account. In Book XII Augustine is chiefly concerned with refuting standard objections to the Christian tradition, returning to discussion of the Creation, including his calculation, based on the scriptures, that the world was created less than 6,000 years ago. This is the only edition of these books in English that provides not only a text but also a detailed commentary on one of the most influential documents in the history of western Christianity.

Book excerpt: The most important work of the towering intellectual of the Middle Ages, Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae remains one of the great seminal works of philosophy and theology, while extending to subjects as diverse as law and government, sacraments and liturgy, and psychology and ethics. In his third and final part of the Summa Theologiae, Thomas Aquinas begins to address the life of Christ, lived out both in Jesus himself, and in each of the baptized through the sacraments.
