Book excerpt: This intimate, eminently practical memoir of a successful homeschooled family of six children illuminates today’s most exciting choice in education, and shows how it works from cradle to college. What is it that homeschoolers do that the public schools can’t or won’t? There are at least as many answers as there are studies. But nothing can capture the homeschooling experience in all its richness like the story of a real family that homeschools its children in middleclass America. Homeschooling: A Family’s Journey is the perfect book for those millions of Americans who may know someone who homeschools, who may have read about it, thought about it, and wondered whether homeschooling is right for them. Sharing the concerns of committed parents everywhere, authors Gregory and Martine Millman are consistently practical, informed, caring, and no-nonsense in their approach. They pay special attention to homeschooling and college, the economics of home-learning, and how a parent can really handle a child’s full education. Homeschooling opens a window on an exciting, important way of education—and, even more, a way of life—that can make all the difference in your family’s world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think homeschooling is only for a handful of eccentrics on either end of the political spectrum? Think again. Today in America, two million primary- and secondary-school students are homeschooled. Growing at a rate of 10 percent annually, homeschooling represents the most dramatic change in American education since the invention of the mimeograph—and the story has only just begun. In The Year of Learning Dangerously, popular blogger, author, and former child actor Quinn Cummings recounts her family’s decision to wade into the unfamiliar waters of homeschooling—despite a chronic lack of discipline, some major gaps in academic knowledge, and a serious case of math aversion. (That description refers to Quinn.) Trying out the latest trends, attending key conferences (incognito, of course), and recounting the highlights and lowlights along the way, Quinn takes her daughter’s education into her own hands, for better and for worse. Part memoir, part social commentary, and part how-not-to guide, The Year of Learning Dangerously will make you laugh and make you think. And it may or may not have a quiz at the end. OK, there isn’t a quiz. Probably.

For over fifteen years, David and Micki Colfax educated their children at home. They don't think of themselves as pioneers, though that's what they became. Unhappy with the public schools, the Colfaxes wanted the best education possible for their four sons: a program for learning that met the evolving needs of each child and gave them complete control of how and what their children learned. The results? A prescription for excellence-Harvard educations for their sons Grant, Drew, and Reed. (Their fourth son is still too young for college.) Now the Colfaxes tell how all parents can become involved in homeschooling. In a straight-talking book that reads like a frank conversation among friends, they tell what they did and how they did it: their educational approaches, the lessons they learned, and what materials-books, equipment, educational aids-proved most useful over the years. Best of all, they show you how you can take charge of your children's education-in an invaluable sourcebook that will help you find a rewarding and successful alternative to our failing schools.

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable guide will prove to you that the biggest secret to a successful homeschool is motivation. Because when you choose how to homeschool, there is an elephant in the room. And that's you. You are the parent. But now you are the teacher too. That is potentially an enormous problem on the motivation front. Picture this: What happens when you end up in lots of battles with the kids? The kids aren't interested. They don't want to learn. You are tearing your hair out. This is their future ...Can't they realize that? What if they don't get any exams or qualifications? They will have failed. And you will have failed too. This guide shows you exactly what things you can do in your homeschool to get your kids happy and enthusiastic - and what not to do. Dealing with common homeschool problems like this plea: "Desperate for enlightenment. My kid refuses to do any work" , the book contains indispensable homeschooling help for all homeschoolers, old and new alike. And, since giving your child the best start in life is something we all have in common, you will find the advice here applies worldwide whether you call it homeschooling or, as in the UK, home education. Based on unique experience from one of the few second generation homeschool families and suggestions from more than 8,500 Facebook fans, Secrets of Success will show you: What makes a good homeschool teacher Practical steps to keep your kids motivated and in love with learning How to make a homeschool schedule which works for all of you How to deal with the potential nightmare of homeschooling high school and the responsibility of motivating kids through exams At all times practical, this upbeat guide is essential reading whatever homeschooling method you follow. Whether you stick to a strict schedule with clear academic targets, decide on relaxed homeschooling, or let your child lead the way and unschool, this guide will teach you the essential steps to success using real-life insights from homeschoolers who have 'been there and done that.' With a homeschool son now going to Oxford University and a daughter following an unschooling route as a talented artist, the author argues that most parents misunderstand what makes young people motivated. This problem becomes particularly acute when it comes to homeschooling high school and the responsibility for getting your children through exams. Getting your unmotivated teen on-side is something all parents struggle with. Learning to trust your child and accept what they say - even though you may not agree with it - is one of the homeschooling lessons which is hardest to put into practice. Uncovering the five common motivational mistakes made by parents, the book concludes by proving that the academic route is not the only path to homeschooling success. Drawing on inspiration from leading educationalists like John Holt, Ken Robinson, Charlotte Mason and Maria Montessori, you will find a wealth of practical help so that you can make homeschooling the best and most fulfilling thing you've ever done. "It is time to think outside the box and teach your child to embrace a life of learning. This book will give you the tools to do that." Lisa Vaught "Great book, very encouraging and supportive." Janet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four decades, the number of conservative parents who homeschool their children has risen. But unlike others who teach at home, conservative homeschool families and organizations have amassed an army of living-room educators ready to defend their right to instruct their children as they wish, free from government intrusion. Through intensive but often hidden organizing, homeschoolers have struck fear into state legislators, laying the foundations for Republican electoral success. In Homeschooling the Right, the political scientist Heath Brown provides a novel analysis of the homeschooling movement and its central role in conservative efforts to shrink the public sector. He traces the aftereffects of the passage of state homeschool policies in the 1980s and the results of ongoing conservative education activism on the broader political landscape, including the campaigns of George W. Bush and the rise of the Tea Party. Brown finds that by opting out of public education services in favor of at-home provision, homeschoolers have furthered conservative goals of reducing the size and influence of government. He applies the theory of policy feedback—how public-policy choices determine subsequent politics—to demonstrate the effects of educational activism for other conservative goals such as gun rights, which are similarly framed as matters of liberty and freedom. Drawing on decades of county data, dozens of original interviews, and original archives of formal and informal homeschool organizations, this book is a groundbreaking investigation of the politics of the conservative homeschooling movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, the United States Census Bureau reported that in 2020, during the rise of the global health pandemic COVID-19, homeschooling among Black families increased five-fold. However, Black families had begun choosing to homeschool even before COVID-19 led to school closures and disrupted traditional school spaces. Homeschooling Black Children in the US: Theory, Practice and Popular Culture offers an insightful look at the growing practice of homeschooling by Black families through this timely collection of articles by education practitioners, researchers, homeschooling parents and homeschooled children. Homeschooling Black Children in the US: Theory, Practice and Popular Culture honestly presents how systemic racism and other factors influence the decision of Black families to homeschool. In addition, the book chapters illustrate in different ways how self-determination manifests within the homeschooling practice. Researchers Khadijah Ali-Coleman and Cheryl Fields-Smith have edited a compilation of work that explores the varied experiences of parents homeschooling Black children before, during and after COVID-19. From veteran homeschooling parents sharing their practice to researchers reporting their data collected pre-COVID, this anthology of work presents an overview that gives substantive insight into what the practice of homeschooling looks like for many Black families in the United States.
