Now, with the inclusion of Cunliffe’s “Homeric Proper and Place Names”—a forty-two-page supplement to the Lexicon—this expanded edition will be even more useful to readers of Homer. In his original preface to the supplement, Cunliffe explained that proper and place names had to be excluded from the Lexicon “chiefly on the ground of expense.” Although the Lexicon has enjoyed perennial popularity, scholars have long lamented the absence of “capitalized” name-forms in the Lexicon. By consolidating the two works into one handy single-volume format, this expanded edition fills the only gap in Cunliffe’s indispensable reference. In his preface to the expanded edition, James H. Dee explains the benefits of uniting the two dictionaries. In addition, Dee provides a brief list of errata and a helpful key to Cunliffe’s system of referencing the poems according to Greek letter.

This is an old topic, which famously interested Plato, and an object of constant scholarly attention from the time of ancient commentators to the present day. The book begins with an introduction to the particularly complex set of factors that affect all efforts to interpret Homeric names. The main chapters are structured around the character and action of selected heroes in their Homeric contexts (in the case of the Iliad, a heroic war; the Odyssey chapter encompasses more than one planes of action). They offer a survey of modern etymologies, set against ancient views on names and naming, in order to reconstruct (as far as possible) the reception of significant names by ancient audiences and further to shed light on the parameters surrounding the choice and use of personal names in Homer. An Appendix touches on the underexplored career of Homeric personal names as historical names, offering data and a preliminary analysis.

The most productive source of difficult, even inexplicable, words was Homer s 28,000 verses of epic poetry. Steve Reece proposes an approach to elucidating the meanings of some of these difficult words that finds its inspiration primarily in Milman Parry s oral-formulaic theory. He proposes that during the long period of oral transmission acoustic uncertainties, especially regarding word boundaries, were continually occurring: a bard uttered one collocation of words, but his audience thought it heard another. The consequent resegmentation of words and phrases is the probable cause of some of the etymologically inexplicable words in our Homeric texts.

Book excerpt: The book of Revelation offers us an interesting theological dilemma. It states Rev 22:16. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. Revelation also states it is "the true sayings" of Jesus and that it is "the testimony of Christ". If this is not "the gospel of Jesus Christ" then what is it and should we consider it accursed testimony of an angel? If it is not to be considered accursed, then it cannot be some other gospel message then what was already given previously. However, this is the conundrum, for if this is the gospel message, then why do so few understand it? There is a possibility which few consider but is the overall thesis of this apology. The reason people don't understand revelation is because they never understood what the gospel message was in the first place! In that case, where does that put those who claim it is not essential for salvation? Do you not find it quite curious that the most "Personally" given NT book By Jesus himself, is the least understood and given the least importance for Salvation in Christendom?....There are numerous preachers and bible exegetes but as Paul said "... I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge" . Most who profess the name of Christ are feeding on doctrines of devils and the ignorant.. There are, without question, many "qualified" teachers and scholars with many years of "dedication" and "solid education". However, teachers, no matter how well lettered or numbered in degrees; if obtained from others; who are just as equally ignorant in such matters, are just " blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
