Moreover, the book provides valuable, time-saving tools for network simulation and modeling. It includes coverage of optical signal transmission systems and networks; a wide range of critical methods and techniques, such as MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) by employing spatial modes in few-mode and multicore optical fiber; OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) utilized to enhance the spectral efficiency and to enable elastic optical networking schemes; and advanced modulation and coding schemes to approach the Shannon's channel capacity limit. There are detailed discussions on the basic principles and applications of high-speed digital signal processing, as well as description of the most relevant post-detection compensation techniques

Book excerpt: The mission of Department of Homeland Security Bioterrorism Risk Assessment: A Call for Change, the book published in December 2008, is to independently and scientifically review the methodology that led to the 2006 Department of Homeland Security report, Bioterrorism Risk Assessment (BTRA) and provide a foundation for future updates. This book identifies a number of fundamental concerns with the BTRA of 2006, ranging from mathematical and statistical mistakes that have corrupted results, to unnecessarily complicated probability models and models with fidelity far exceeding existing data, to more basic questions about how terrorist behavior should be modeled. Rather than merely criticizing what was done in the BTRA of 2006, this new NRC book consults outside experts and collects a number of proposed alternatives that could improve DHS's ability to assess potential terrorist behavior as a key element of risk-informed decision making, and it explains these alternatives in the specific context of the BTRA and the bioterrorism threat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time division multiplexing (TDM) has been the fundamental basis for adding capacity to digital telecommunications networks for decades. However, within the past two years, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been emerging as an important and widely deployed complement to TDM. Sales of systems based on the new technology have risen at breathtaking speed. The driving force behind this sales explosion was the unexpected rapid exhaustion of long distance fiber network capacity. This fiber exhaust, combined with favorable economics for WDM, led to the use of this technology over other alternatives. The WDM deployment raises fundamental and challenging problems that require novel and innovative solutions. This volume presents papers from an interdisciplinary workshop held at DIMACS on multichannel optical networks. Leading computer science theorists and practitioners discussed admissions control, routing and channel assignment, multicasting and protection, and fault-tolerance. The book features application of theoretical and/or algorithmical results to practical problems and addresses the influence of practical problems to theoretical/algorithmic studies. The volume can serve as a text for an advanced course in computer science, networking, and operations research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical networks are leaving the labs and becoming a reality. Despite the current crisis of the telecom industry, our everyday life increasingly depends on communication networks for information exchange, medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours. High capacity links are required by the large futemet traffic demand, and optical networks remain one of the most promising technologies for meeting these needs. WDM systems are today widely deployed, thanks to low-cost at extreme data rates and high reliability of optical components, such as optical amplifiers and fixed/tunable filters and transceivers. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly based on optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at the network edge. Traditional multi-layer architectures, such as the widely deployed IP/ATM/SDH protocol stack, are increasingly based on WDM transport; further efforts are sought to move at the optical layer more of the functionalities available today in higher protocol layers. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design opportunities to network operators and designers. The trends towards dynamically configurable all-optical network infrastructures open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices, which must face issues such as interoperability and unified control and management.
