Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Germany Germans often maintain that their country is more diverse than any other, and on that account more difficult to describe: a country Of many races and various rules held loosely together by language and more tightly of late years by the bond Of empire. But the truth probably is, that in our country we see and understand varieties, while in a foreign one we chiefly perceive what is unlike ourselves and common to the people we are Observing. For from the flux and welter Of qualities that form a modern nation certain traits survive peculiar to that nation: specialities Of feature, character, and habit, some seen at first sight, others only discovered after long and intimate acquaint ance. It is undoubtedly true that no one person can be at home in every corner Of the German Empire, or of any other empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Villa Elsa: A Story of German Family Life This narrative offers a gentle but permanent answer to the problem presented to humanity by the German people. It seeks to go beyond the stage of indemnities, diplomatic or trade control, peace by armed preponderance. These agencies do not take into account Teuton nature, character, manner of living, beliefs. Unless the Germans are changed, the world will live at swords' points with them both in theory and in practice. Whether they are characteristically Huns or not, it should be tragically realized that something ought to be done to alter their type. Their minds, hearts, souls, should be touched in a direct, personal, intimate way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As a tourist, he may observe and describe the external features of a country, and the outdoor manners and customs of the people; but these are only a part of their national life. To understand that fully requires an appreciative knowledge of their mental habits and sentiments, and this knowledge can be ac quired only by an identification with them in their social, religious, and home life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Daily Life: A Reader, Giving in Simple German Full Information On The Various Topics Of German Life, Manners, And Institutions There is no need to insist on the growing im portance of Germany. Our scholars and musicians have long recognised it; and it has more recently been brought home to the great Middle Class by the keen and often successful competition of German commercial and industrial enterprise in the markets of the world. It is consequently being understood that German is a language to be studied, not merely by the specialist in science or even by the lover of literature, but for more practical purposes also. It would seem that to a nation of shop keepers such an argument would appeal with considerable force; but the fact remains that while the last thirty years have witnessed an extraordinary development of German prosperity and German prestige, the amount of time given to the German language in our schools has hardly increased at all. Indeed a change for the better is only just beginning to appear: the interest shown in methods of modern language teaching which have proved efficacious on the continent, leads one to h0pe that henceforth more time will be given to German as well as to French, and also that the time will be better spent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Germany I have not ventured this volume without a pur pose. After several years' residence in Germany, I returned home and was surprised to find how little people in, general knew of German life. A vague idea of beer-drinking students thick-headed emigrant peasants, metaphysics and philosophy no one can understand, with a cloud of pipe-smoke enveloping the whole, seemed tome the received impression of a people, who yearly have been pouring into our land, bringing with them their thrift and talent. That there be truth in the general conception no one can deny, but that all the sweet amenities of life spring up in its domestic relations, that there is a charm living in a country where every rood of land teems with poetry and historic lore, does not re quire me to tell. That the constancy of their affec tions and the goodness of their nature commands our respect, has so impressed me, that I have ventured to print my rambling thoughts. So many of my country-women are finding their way to Germany, perhaps a few remarks by one of their kind may prove useful. I do not pretend to convey anything but passing impressions, but such as they are, they may awaken in some a wish, as one of their own writers has beautifully expressed it: To lift the veil that shrouds this romantic land, or it may give some idea of common life as they will find it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ in a German Home: As Seen in the Married Life of Frederick and Caroline Perthes There is a circle of our most intelligent readers familiar with the two octavo volumes published in England, containing an admirable translation of Professor Perthes' biography of his father and mother. Many of our leading presidents and professors of colleges and theological seminaries, our most learned divines and authors, have confessed that that work is one of the most interesting which our age has produced. Its size alone has precluded its publication in this country; for the work is of so high a character as to appeal to a very intellectual but rather limited class of readers. The rare value of the book has long prompted me to desire to see the best things in it made the common property of a large public; and at my request a genial and gifted friend has gone over the whole work, and culled out those portions which especially illustrate the family life of Frederick and Caroline Perthes, and which delineate that rarest and most beautiful spectacle in the world, a truly Christian, highly refined, and most amiable and gentle home.
