We were early, but already the usual bustle incident to the sailing of a steamer had begun. Crowds of friends, seeing passengers oh, were there. I do not mean, lose him to New York; far from that; as far as Europe, in fact; for if I were to take stock (the local commercialism instantly penetrates one's vocabulary) of my emotions, I suspect I should find myself evenly balanced between the impulse to board the next train for Boston and the impulse to board the next steamer for Liverpool. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Letters Gertrude Cozad, on her return to Japan, writes as follows: Kobe, September 23, 1897. I think Japan has impressed me much as it would a newcomer this time. It seemed to me very miserable and cold and squalid, as I passed through the native quarter in Yokohama. There were various types of women to be seen on the streets. The well-dressed, placid, aimless, emotionless women, and among the poorer dressed women very rarely a happy face. They seemed either dull, or crushed and unhappy. That is the way the people on the street impressed me. But when I saw the girls who came down to the boat to meet Kajiro San, (A young Japanese girl who has just graduated from Mt. Holyoke, and returned to Japan with us, ) either students or teachers in the girls school, all of them with bright, animated, purposeful faces, I felt the power of a Christian life, of an education, of an enlargening and widening of thought and view. The life the missionaries live here does not seem very luxurious to me; not so much so as it will after a few months, when I have been off touring awhile. I am sighing for the flesh pots of Egypt. The miserable Japanese fruit is a mockery to the name. The butter smells so I wish it might be left off the table. The milk has no more taste of milk than so much rice water. I used to feel when I told about those things in America, as if I must be stretching it, but really the half has never been told. There is everything in getting used to things, though, and they will seem different after awhile. Our school is going to open up in three weeks. It is small, but when there is such demand for workers from our school, and so many of our graduates are doing such excellent work, we feel as if we must do all in our power to supply the demand. Word has just come of the death, by cholera, of one of our most beautiful and efficient workers, one who entered the school the first year I came here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Country House These letters - originally published in the Midland Counties Herald - were begun without the least idea of republication. In compliance, however, with numerous requests, a series of them now appear in revised book form. If they have any merit at all, it may perhaps be owing to the fact that they are entirely the result of my own observations, experiences, and reflections, and are not made up from other books upon a similar subject. At the same time, I do not flatter myself that I have discovered anything fresh, or have noticed anything hitherto unobserved. I have, for the most part, simply told an old tale, but one that will be ever new while Nature repeats her old story of enduring consistency, yet ever recurring change. I desire to acknowledge the kindness of Viscount Cobham - better known as Lord Lyttelton - for allowing me (in common with some other neighbours and tenants) free access to Hagley Park, where I have observed so many of the picturesque and varied effects described in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Abroad to Kindred at Home, Vol. 1 of 2 I was aware that our stayers-at-home had already something too much of churches, statues, and pic tures, and yet that they cannot well imagine how much they make up the existence of tourists in the Old World. I have sedulously avoided this rock, and must trust for any little interest my book may possess to the honesty with which I have recorded my impressions, and to the fresh aspect of familiar things to the eye of a denizen of the New World. The fragmentary state in which my letters appear is owing to my fear of wearying readers less interested than my own family by prolonged details or prosing reflections, or disgusting them with the egotism of personal experience. I believe that the name of Henry Parkes will yet be dear to the heart of every patriotic son of Federated Australia, and that all concerning him will be very precious in their eyes. The mistakes, the errors, and the failures of the last years of his life will be wiped away as one would brush dust from a beloved dead face. Who that is just will judge of him by the years between seventy and eighty? No! By the glorious aims, by the high hopes, by the great achievements, and the ringing eloquence of his grand manhood will he be judged; and when Australasia takes her place among the great nations of the world, his name will be inscribed in golden letters upon the annals of her history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Letters, and Wayside Gleanings, for the Folks at Home In 1864, at the suggestion Of friends, one of Whom pledged fifty dollars for the first copy, I undertook to collect my papers and put them into book-form but when ready to write, like scores of others, i found my sight too much impaired, and was obliged to relinquish the project, or lose it entirely. But oh, the bitter struggle that ensued To give up the pleasures of intercourse with the world of mind and matter through the medium of the press, to be shut out from a realm of lightand beauty, and go down into the solemn night with never. A star, was a dreadful picture to my sensitive nature. With the aid of simple restoratives, rest, patient waiting, and The divine blessing so earnestly sought, I gradually emerged from my sad condition. But since then my imperfect vision has made resolute, and continuous literary labor irksome, even painful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Abroad to Kindred at Home, Vol. 2 of 2 WE have crossed the Alps, my dear C., and are in Italy, but not quite so easily as I write it. The weather is as much a matter of speculation to those who are about to make a pass of the Alps as if they were going to sea. This morning at three I was looking out from my window, and found it perfectly clear. My Old familiar friends were shining down on the valley of Lanslebourg, Orion on his throne, and Jupiter glittering over one of the mountain pinnacles. Now, thought I, we are sure of a fine day. But when Francois came round to our doors with his customary reveille, Gate cope, (francois always speaks English in the hearing of the natives l) the sky was overcast. We were early astir, which, though both healthful and good husbandry, is only the virtue of necessity with us.
