As aides need training, you can make as many copies as you want - there's no restriction when used with aides assigned from your office location. Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Identify three positive health benefits patients can get from their pets Explain three ways to approach a patient's pet safely, and Describe two ways to minimize allergies when working near pets. OVERVIEW Home health aides often provide care to patients who have pets in the home. Studies show that pets can play a significant role in an individual's health by their ability to make their owners feel more comfortable during stressful bouts of illness, recovering from major surgeries, or experiencing the loss of a spouse or other important person in their lives. The bond between patients and their pets is often established before the onset of illness, so their relationship with these pets offers positive memories and a sense of encouragement for whatever they face in the future. In addition to providing quality care for patients, it is important for home health aides to learn how to manage and work around a patient's pet. This in-service provides a closer look at several types of pets, along with routine care-giving requirements, and your role as a home health aide in providing that care safely in this environment.

Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: * Identify three behaviors that may reflect alterations in cognitive or emotional status * List two warning signs of impending physical aggression * Name three measures to take when dealing with patients with behavior problems * Name two reasons for behavior problems. OVERVIEW Mental disorders causing behavior problems are very common. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that one in five adults in the United States suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Of the ten leading causes for disability, four of them are mental disorders. In addition to the diagnosable mental disorders, patients may suffer acute anxiety following surgery or a major illness. Therefore, many homecare patients have some degree of alteration in mental processes or behaviors that may interfere with the goals of the medical and nursing treatment. Often the behavior problems diminish the patient's ability to achieve optimal day-to-day functioning. Working with patients with behavior problems is challenging to home health aides. While their basic curriculum included emotional needs and ways to work with patients, they often feel somewhat ill-at-ease when patients display inappropriate or hostile behavior. Many aides are fearful of saying or doing the wrong thing. The fact that they are often alone with patients in their homes can add to the discomfort in working with patients who have behavior problems. This in-service is designed to explain some common behavior problems encountered in homecare patients. It provides tips for dealing with these patients with the goal of increasing the aide's comfort level.

LESSON OBJECTIVES After completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: * Name two different types of arthritis * List three factors that contribute to arthritis pain, and * Describe three ways home health aides can help patients with arthritis. LESSON OVERVIEW According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), arthritis affects about one of every three adults, making it one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. It is the nation's leading cause of disability. Homecare patients are very likely to have arthritis, and even when it may not the primary diagnosis for homecare, it is often the reason the patient requires a home health aide. Therefore it is very important for home health aides to understand this condition, and to know how to care for arthritic patients. The purpose of this in-service is to educate aides about arthritis and to provide information about the care of affected patients.

LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Describe three actions he or she can perform that can help heal a pressure ulcer. Explain two observations about a patient with a pressure ulcer to report to the nurse. IIdentify two measures to prevent the development of a pressure ulcer. OVERVIEW Unfortunately, there is a three to 17 percent incidence of pressure ulcers in elderly patients. Those patients can experience extreme pain, social isolation, and complications, such as infection of the bone or blood, along with a higher mortality rate. Overall, in the United States the cost for the treatment of pressure ulcers ranges from $9.1 to $11.6 billion per year. The best plan for patients in the home setting is to provide care that helps to prevent the development of pressure ulcers. However, some patients are admitted with a pressure ulcer and others, in spite of good care, can develop one. That's when every member of the homecare team, including home health aides, can play a role in treatment. Most existing training on pressure ulcer generally targets practitioners. This lesson focuses on instructing home health aides, new or experienced, on care of the patient with a pressure ulcer.

Remember that Home Health Aides must have 12 hours of in-service training every year. LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Identify three light housekeeping duties that may be part of a home health aide assignment. Describe two ways in which performing light housekeeping duties for patients can help keep them safe, and State one way to respond to patients and family members who ask for help with household chores that are not assigned. OVERVIEW Most people enjoy living in a clean, uncluttered, home environment. But just as human beings differ in so many ways, so do their ideas of basic housekeeping practices. Some people require their surroundings remain immaculate, while others feel completely comfortable living among stacks of newspapers, cabinets and tables filled with knickknacks, and enough plants to start a small nursery. And many people fall somewhere in between these two extremes. Whoever the person and whatever home environment exists, as far as housekeeping is concerned, illness or physical impairment can change things quickly. Patients who may have been able to do these types of tasks themselves, become dependent on others to help them. Patients may turn to family members or friends, community resources, or their home health providers for these types of services. While home health aides usually provide hands-on care to the patient directly, they are often called upon to perform a number of these light housekeeping duties that are also important to the patient's overall health and his or her ability to continue the plan of care and reach expected outcomes

LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Identify three situations in which hand hygiene is important Describe two types of products that work best to clean hands, and Explain two principles of hand hygiene OVERVIEW According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "clean hands are the single most important factor in preventing the spread of dangerous germs." In fact, failing to perform appropriate hand hygiene is the leading cause of health care associated infections and the spread of multi-resistant organisms, and is a substantial contributor to outbreaks. Studies show that the behavior of health care staff plays a major role in their hand hygiene compliance. Fortunately, even if staff are nonchalant about hand hygiene, behaviors can change once they learn proper techniques and see how their actions can positively affect outcomes. This in-service focuses on providing home health aides with information and guidance to help them understand the reasons for and the effects of good hand hygiene

OVERVIEW Health care workers face ethical issues in every setting. This is especially true in the home, where the independence of both the patient and the care providers, along with limited supervision, make identifying and dealing with ethical issues a challenge. For home health aides, ethical issues in the home may be due to patient care concerns, patient choice, family involvement, and the aide's personal involvement and compliance with agency policies and laws. To understand the risk involved and act responsibly, the aide must have an understanding of ethics and be able to recognize and report potential ethical issues. This in-service provides an in-depth look at ethics, ethical issues in the home, and the home health aide's role in preventing or resolving these problems.

LESSON OVERVIEW About 400,000 people in the United States have multiple sclerosis. The symptoms vary greatly from person to person and from time to time in one person. When symptoms are present, they often reduce the person's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). During relapses, many patients with MS require assistance from home health aides. For that reason it is important that aides understand the basics of the disease as well as their role in providing care.

LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Discuss the different types of therapy home health patients may receive Explain three ways to support a therapy plan of care, and State three reasons a patient might receive therapy services OVERVIEW A rehabilitation program in the home may require the skills of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. However, a patient's care doesn't stop with the therapists. Home health aides are dedicated to supporting a program's daily requirements. They offer encouragement that can be a determining factor in the patient's recovery. Observing, documenting, and reporting even the slightest change in a patient's health can have a significant impact on a patient's therapy plan. This in-service focuses on the role of the home health aide when working with therapy patients. It looks at the different therapies prescribed for patients suffering from common diseases and injuries. It also offers examples of how home health aides carry out portions of the therapy program as directed by the therapists. Finally, it emphasizes the home health aide's role as being instrumental in helping a therapy patient reach his or her full potential and recovery.
