Book excerpt: Home Health Aide On-the-Go In-service Vol 10, Issue 9, Understanding Depression OVERVIEW Depression is a mental health problem that affects many homecare patients, but it is often overlooked. Depression can be masked by usual routines; however, the home health aide must be trained to recognize symptoms of a patient's declining body, mood, and thoughts. This in-service presents an overview of the causes and symptoms of depression. Aides will learn how to provide a safe and supportive environment for the depressed patient, as well maintain their own positive attitude to preserve their well-being. LESSON OBJECTIVES After completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Recognize signs and symptoms of depression and how depression can affect the patient's ability to function on a day-to-day basis Identify common causes of depression Discuss attitudes and approaches the home health aide can take to communicate effectively with the person who has depressive symptoms Identify ways to foster self-care and prevent burnout Contents of this lesson: A clearly written fact sheet A 10-question post-test to measure understanding of the subject matter An answer sheet with a place for the instructor's comments and signature An illustrative, homecare-specific case study Suggested supplemental learning activities An attendance log and certificate of completion
