Book Synopsis They Were My Heroes by : Mohul Bhowmick
Download or read book They Were My Heroes written by Mohul Bhowmick and published by Xpress Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knitted by verses indulged with tempo, Mohul Bhowmick's latest offering- They Were My Heroes- is a pre-eminent contribution to the domain of Indian poetry in English. Sporadically merged with manoeuvres that carry the enterprise past the realm of common comprehension, it is laced with both joy and pain. The course of a vigorous dalliance, now ended, rears its head and in mitigation, Bhowmick probes into the anguish that he suffers. Like the majority of his work in poetry, this book too is semi-autobiographical; the obsessions, evasions and fixations that it unveils are a sight to behold. Coming a year after his highly acclaimed debut in travel writing, Bhowmick is back to doing what he does best- asking questions of himself with subtle nudges. Arriving a long time after it was first conceived, this collection consists of a hundred poems. It is divided into four sections: Travel Capers, Demons, Romantic Leftovers and Residues of the Heart. Each resists its own intricacies with sophistication, touching the reader with every note and chord. In the process, national-level cricketer Bhowmick finds himself facing a wall that no sunrise can erase or obliterate.
Book Synopsis Men and Women in the Church by : Sarah Sumner
Download or read book Men and Women in the Church written by Sarah Sumner and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-09-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelicals stand divided in their view of women in the church. On one side stand complementarians, arguing the full worth of women but assigning them to differing roles. On the other side stand egalitarians, arguing that the full worth of women demands their equal treatment and access to leadership roles. Is there a way to mend the breach and build consensus? Sarah Sumner thinks there is. Avoiding the pitfalls of both radical feminism and reactionary conservatism, she traces a new path through the issues--biblical, theological, psychological and practical--to establish and affirm common ground. Arguing that men and women are both equal and distinct, Sumner encourages us to find ways to honor and benefit from the leadership gifts of both. Men and Women in the Church is a book for all who want a fresh and hope-filled look at a persistent problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Okay, so his credit card is maxed, his boss hates him, his father is a world-class alcoholic and his hairline, like the country, is showing signs of recession. But everything will come right if he sticks to his New Year's resolutions. All he needs to do to get his life back on track is bag himself a great new job, lose 9 kgs, get a girlfriend (blonde, not too much admin) and get 250 Facebook friends without too many freaks. Easy. Or so he tells himself. But in reality the odds are stacked against the Jasonator. He may have the best collection of branded jeans in the paint retail industry - and, let's face it, nothing is more important than that, right? - but turning his life around is going to require a lot more than just a change of trousers (although this, too, may well be on the cards). Will this be the year that Jason finally gets it together and gets one over those who are intent on dragging him down - his boss, the body corporate, estate agents, his sickeningly successful friends . . . or will it be known forever as the year of the gherkin?
Book Synopsis Women and Power in the Middle East by : Suad Joseph
Download or read book Women and Power in the Middle East written by Suad Joseph and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeen essays in Women and Power in the Middle East analyze the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that shape gender systems in the Middle East and North Africa. Published at different times in Middle East Report, the journal of the Middle East Research and Information Project, the essays document empirically the similarities and differences in the gendering of relations of power in twelve countries—Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Iran. Together they seek to build a framework for understanding broad patterns of gender in the Arab-Islamic world. Challenging questions are addressed throughout. What roles have women played in politics in this region? When and why are women politically mobilized, and which women? Does the nature and impact of their mobilization differ if it is initiated by the state, nationalist movements, revolutionary parties, or spontaneous revolt? And what happens to women when those agents of mobilization win or lose? In investigating these and other issues, the essays take a look at the impact of rapid social change in the Arab-Islamic world. They also analyze Arab disillusionment with the radical nationalisms of the 1950s and 1960s and with leftist ideologies, as well as the rise of political Islamist movements. Indeed the essays present rich new approaches to assessing what political participation has meant for women in this region and how emerging national states there have dealt with organized efforts by women to influence the institutions that govern their lives. Designed for courses in Middle East, women's, and cultural studies, Women and Power in the Middle East offers to both students and scholars an excellent introduction to the study of gender in the Arab-Islamic world.

Download or read book District Six written by Martin Greshoff and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Greshoff writes about the book he has created that contains photographs by Jan Greshoff of the iconic neighbourhood of District Six and the memoirs of some of those who lived there before it was destroyed by the apartheid regime. My uncle, Jan Greshoff, was an architect who worked in Cape Town, South Africa, from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was a private and modest man and didn't talk much about his photography. Jan had no children, and it was only after he died and his wife passed his archive of negatives on to us, his nephews and niece, that we discovered the full extent of his archive. His photographs cover many areas around Cape Town, including District Six.In common with many architects, Jan was a keen photographer and his profession certainly informed his work and his interest in his environment. He was a very close friend of Jansje Wissema, who was commissioned to photograph District Six for the South African Institute of Architects at roughly the same time that Jan was photographing the area. In his lifetime he did not publish or exhibit his photographs, and it was only in 1996 that he donated some 800 images to the newly founded District Six museum. They were exhibited by the museum in the same year and a booklet, 'The Last Days of District Six' was printed by the museum to accompany the exhibition. Jan died in 2007.In 2014 I started a Facebook page so his photographs could be seen by the communities which he photographed - It was through responses and comments made about the photos on this forum that it became clear that Jan's District Six images provoked memories and intense emotions. Many comments related to the way of living in a cohesive multi-ethnic society, the 'spirit' of District Six, memories of District Six characters, childhood games, physical places such as the shops, 'bioscopes' and streets. Feelings of anger were also expressed in relation to the Group Areas Act and subsequent forced removals from District Six. Feelings of frustration and anger were also expressed in relation to the painfully slow restitution process. It was through these comments made in response to the photographs, and through discussion with an ex-District Six resident, that the idea of recording these stories in more depth came about. The book contains memoirs and poetry submitted by 63 ex-District Six residents and by those who had a connection to the area. The stories which have been submitted are only a small fraction of the stories to be told. The editing process has been done in a collaborative way with each of the contributors. The stories are theirs and it was important that they were a part of this process. It felt important that these memories of an area no longer in existence were captured and preserved for the future and that what happened to District Six was not forgotten and the memory of District Six was kept alive.
Book Synopsis Women in the Church by : Lesly F. Massey
Download or read book Women in the Church written by Lesly F. Massey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of women in the church is one of the most hotly debated issues of our time. Some Protestant churches have either abandoned or radically modified their interpretations of Biblical passages to allow women to take leadership roles and to accommodate social change; for others, the Old and New Testament passages forbid women to take leadership roles, even though equality between the sexes was taught by Jesus Christ and demonstrated in the early Christian community. The current fervor concerning women in the church is examined in this book, which also traces the status of women through 2,000 years of church history. Chapters are devoted to women in the life and ministry of Jesus, women in the earliest Christian community, solutions to transitional problems, the church's reversion to patriarchal models, Alexander Campbell and the American Restoration Movement in the 19th century, the antislavery movement and modern feminism, and the differing stances taken by churches concerning women in leadership roles.

Book Synopsis Abandonment to Divine Providence by : Jean Pierre de Caussade
Download or read book Abandonment to Divine Providence written by Jean Pierre de Caussade and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to live in the present moment, accepting everyday obstacles with humility and love, has guided generations of seekers to spiritual peace and holiness. In this timeless spiritual classic, de Caussade presents the simple, profound gospel message that Jesus lived and taught: My meat is to do the will of my Father in heaven. The author states, The will of God gives to all things a supernatural and divine value for the soul submitting to it. The duties it imposes and those it contains become holy and perfect because everything it touches shares its divine character. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and much practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives.De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.
