Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spring 1986 Program in Geometric Function Theory (GFT) at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) brought together mathe maticians interested in Teichmiiller theory, quasiconformal mappings, Kleinian groups, univalent functions and value distribution. It included a large and stimulating Workshop, preceded by a mini-conference on String Theory attended by both mathematicians and physicists. These activities produced interesting results and fruitful interactions among the partici pants. These volumes represent only a portion of the papers that will even tually result from ideas developed in the offices and corridors of MSRI's elegant home. The Editors solicited contributions from all participants in the Program whether or not they gave a talk at the Workshop. Papers were also submit ted by mathematicians invited but unable to attend. All manuscripts were refereed. The articles included here cover a broad spectrum, representative of the activities during the semester. We have made an attempt to group them by subject, for the reader's convenience. The Editors take pleasure in thanking all participants, authors and ref erees for their work in producing these volumes. We are also grateful to the Scientific Advisory Council of MSRI for sup porting the Program in GFT. Finally thanks are due to the National Sci ence Foundation and those Universities (including Cornell, Michigan, Min nesota, Rutgers Newark, SUNY Stony Brook) who gave released time to faculty members to participate for extended periods in this program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavors of Geometry is a volume of lectures on four geometrically-influenced fields of mathematics that have experienced great development in recent years. Growing out of a series of introductory lectures given at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in January 1995 and January 1996, the book presents chapters by masters in their respective fields on hyperbolic geometry, dynamics in several complex variables, convex geometry, and volume estimation. Each lecture begins with a discussion of elementary concepts, examines the highlights of the field, and concludes with a look at more advanced material. The style and presentation of the chapters are clear and accessible, and most of the lectures are richly illustrated. Bibiliographies and indexes are included to encourage further reading on the topics discussed.

Book excerpt: In the Teichmüller theory of Riemann surfaces, besides the classical theory of quasi-conformal mappings, vari- ous approaches from differential geometry and algebraic geometry have merged in recent years. Thus the central subject of "Complex Structure" was a timely choice for the joint meetings in Katata and Kyoto in 1989. The invited participants exchanged ideas on different approaches to related topics in complex geometry and mapped out the prospects for the next few years of research.

Moreover, Op(t) depends holomorphically on t for Re t > O. General references for much of the material on the derivation of spectral functions, asymptotic expansions and analytic properties of spectral functions are [A-P-S] and [Sh], especially Chapter 2. To study the spectral functions and their relation to the geometry and topology of X, one could, for example, take the natural associated parabolic problem as a starting point. That is, consider the 'heat equation': (%t + p) u(x, t) = 0 { u(x, O) = Uo(x), tP which is solved by means of the (heat) semi group V(t) = e-; namely, u(-, t) = V(t)uoU- Assuming that V(t) is of trace class (which is guaranteed, for instance, if P has a positive principal symbol), it has a Schwartz kernel K E COO(X x X x Rt, E* (R)E), locally given by 00 K(x, y; t) = L>-IAk( k (R) 'Pk)(X, y), k=O for a complete set of orthonormal eigensections 'Pk E COO(E). Taking the trace, we then obtain: 00 tA Op(t) = trace(V(t)) = 2:: >- k. k=O Now, using, e. g., the Dunford calculus formula (where C is a suitable curve around a(P)) as a starting point and the standard for- malism of pseudodifferential operators, one easily derives asymptotic expansions for the spectral functions, in this case for Op.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Function Theory is that part of Complex Analysis which covers the theory of conformal and quasiconformal mappings. Beginning with the classical Riemann mapping theorem, there is a lot of existence theorems for canonical conformal mappings. On the other side there is an extensive theory of qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings, concerning mainly a prior estimates, so called distortion theorems (including the Bieberbach conjecture with the proof of the Branges). Here a starting point was the classical Scharz lemma, and then Koebe's distortion theorem. There are several connections to mathematical physics, because of the relations to potential theory (in the plane). The Handbook of Geometric Function Theory contains also an article about constructive methods and further a Bibliography including applications eg: to electroxtatic problems, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane). · A collection of independent survey articles in the field of GeometricFunction Theory · Existence theorems and qualitative properties of conformal and quasiconformal mappings · A bibliography, including many hints to applications in electrostatics, heat conduction, potential flows (in the plane).

Book excerpt: During August 1988. a group of 67 physicists from 45 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice for the 26th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Australia. Austria. Canada. China. Czechoslovakia. Denmark. France. Federal Republic of Germany. India. Italy. Poland. Portugal. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI). the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. The interest in the Superworld is still very high. This is why. for the third year. the Erice School has been devoted. to a great extent. to review the many developments in Superstring. Supermembranes with their problems of quantization and compactification. All these theoretical speculations are very far from the experimental frontier. In order to keep our feet on the ground. a series of lectures was included to cover the status of CP violation. of the Heavy Leptons. together with the projects for new physics at Gran Sasso and Fermi Lab. For completeness. Julian Schwinger reviewed the great problem of Anomalies in Quantum Field Theory and Shelly Glashow gave a closing lecture on the end of Superworld. If nothing new happens. next year there will be no Superworld in Erice.

Book excerpt: Since the first ICM was held in Zürich in 1897, it has become the pinnacle of mathematical gatherings. It aims at giving an overview of the current state of different branches of mathematics and its applications as well as an insight into the treatment of special problems of exceptional importance. The proceedings of the ICMs have provided a rich chronology of mathematical development in all its branches and a unique documentation of contemporary research. They form an indispensable part of every mathematical library. The Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians 1994, held in Zürich from August 3rd to 11th, 1994, are published in two volumes. Volume I contains an account of the organization of the Congress, the list of ordinary members, the reports on the work of the Fields Medalists and the Nevanlinna Prize Winner, the plenary one-hour addresses, and the invited addresses presented at Section Meetings 1 - 6. Volume II contains the invited address for Section Meetings 7 - 19. A complete author index is included in both volumes. '...the content of these impressive two volumes sheds a certain light on the present state of mathematical sciences and anybody doing research in mathematics should look carefully at these Proceedings. For young people beginning research, this is even more important, so these are a must for any serious mathematics library. The graphical presentation is, as always with Birkhäuser, excellent....' Book excerpt: A revised and substantially enlarged edition of the Russian book Discrete transformation groups and manifold structures published by Nauka in 1983, this volume presents a comprehensive treatment of the geometric theory of discrete groups and the associated tessellations of the underlying space. Also dealt with in depth are geometric and conformal structures on manifolds, with particular emphasis on hyperbolic n-dimensional manifolds. A detailed account of the geometric and analytic properties of geometrically-finite Mobius groups in n-dimensional space is given and this forms the basis of the subsequent analysis. Emphasis is placed on the geometrical aspects and on the universal constraints which must be satisfied by all tessellations and structures on manifolds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exposition of the theoretical foundations of hyperbolic manifolds. It is intended to be used both as a textbook and as a reference. Particular emphasis has been placed on readability and completeness of ar gument. The treatment of the material is for the most part elementary and self-contained. The reader is assumed to have a basic knowledge of algebra and topology at the first-year graduate level of an American university. The book is divided into three parts. The first part, consisting of Chap ters 1-7, is concerned with hyperbolic geometry and basic properties of discrete groups of isometries of hyperbolic space. The main results are the existence theorem for discrete reflection groups, the Bieberbach theorems, and Selberg's lemma. The second part, consisting of Chapters 8-12, is de voted to the theory of hyperbolic manifolds. The main results are Mostow's rigidity theorem and the determination of the structure of geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds. The third part, consisting of Chapter 13, in tegrates the first two parts in a development of the theory of hyperbolic orbifolds. The main results are the construction of the universal orbifold covering space and Poincare's fundamental polyhedron theorem.
