"Holding On To Nothing is a resonant song of the South, all whiskey, bluegrass, Dolly Parton, tobacco fields, and women who know better but still fall for the lowdown men whom they know will disappoint them."--Lauren Groff, National Book Award finalist author of Fates and Furies and Florida Lucy Kilgore has her bags packed for her escape from her rural Tennessee upbringing, but a drunken mistake forever tethers her to the town and one of its least-admired residents, Jeptha Taylor, who becomes the father of her child. Together, these two young people work to form a family, though neither has any idea how to accomplish that, and the odds are against them in a place with little to offer other than bluegrass music, tobacco fields, and a Walmart full of beer and firearms for the hunting season. Their path is harrowing, but Lucy and Jeptha are characters to love, and readers will root for their success in a novel so riveting that no one will want to turn out the light until they know whether this family will survive.

In gorgeously rendered graphic form, Light in Dark Times invites readers to consider these questions by exploring the political catastrophes and moral disasters of the past and present, revealing issues that beg to be studied, understood, confronted, and resisted. A profound work of anthropology and art, this book is for anyone yearning to understand the darkness and hoping to hold onto the light. It is a powerful story of encounters with writers, philosophers, activists, and anthropologists whose words are as meaningful today as they were during the times in which they were written. This book is at once a lament over the darkness of our times, an affirmation of the value of knowledge and introspection, and a consideration of truth, lies, and the dangers of the trivial. In a time when many of us struggle with the feeling that we cannot do enough to change the course of the future, this book is a call to action, asking us to envision and create an alternative world from the one in which we now live. Light in Dark Times is beautiful to look at and to hold – an exquisite work of art that is lively, informative, enlightening, deeply moving, and inspiring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A top mental health writer, trauma researcher, and survivor illuminates the dual nature of loss-the science behind it and art of transforming it with a breakthrough book and truly holistic approach. After experiencing two rare heart attacks at the age of 33-and a third a decade later, DeMarco knows trauma intimately. Trauma breaks your relationship with time by upending your expectations, fracturing your memories and identity, and destroying your innocence. With poignant wisdom and refreshing insight DeMarco explodes traditional myths of resilience and shows what it takes to thrive through any of life's challenges. DeMarco situates meaningful challenge and loss specifically in the context of lost innocence, and challenges common notions that we can think our way out of despair and back to a normal happy life when the unimaginable shatters it. Leveraging advances in emotion science, somatic psychology, neuroscience, and trauma, Holding Onto Air brings the body and spirit into the solution, as much as the mind, and so presents a truly integrated, whole person approach to recovering from lost innocence and building resilience. It also makes spirit accessible for anyone of any background or belief-or no aligned belief. More than a rudimentary map for navigating grief and loss' rocky terrain (with tired tropes and shop-worn strategies), DeMarco offers a unique and trusted guide for an arduous journey every human being will have to face-the realization of evil, pain, or mortality that occurs after a person experiences trauma.

Book excerpt: HOLDING ONTO NOTHING is Gordon Bishop's first book, begun when he was 19 at the Iroquois Hotel in Manhattan and completed when he was 20 and working as a copywriter for a catalog house in Passaic, New Jersey. In 1959, Mr. Bishop walked into THE HERALD-NEWS, Passaic, and got a job as a reporter. Soon after, he was writing his own general-interest column and winning awards: The New Jersey Press Association's Award for "Best Column" in 1965 and the NJPA's Award for "Best Reporting Against Deadlilne" in 1966. A graduate of Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Mr. Bishop, as a student, became a good friend of his teacher, Paterson Poet Louis Ginsberg, father of the famous avant-garde poet Allen Ginsberg. As a result of their decade-long friendship, Mr. Bishop wrote two books on the Ginsbergs, the first a collection of essays (with pictures) entitled THE FIVE WORLDS OF ALLEN GINSBERG, and a biography, THE GINSBERGS: A FAMILY OF POETS, both of which are scheduled for publication later this year. Mr. Bishop also co-authored a three-act play, THE PURPLE CANARY, dealing with corruption in public school systems and which was presented at the off-Broadway Midway Theater in Manhattan in 1963.

Book excerpt: *NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Manslayer didn't know why he felt compelled to travel to the Westward and the Lands of Chaos. He only knew that he needed respite from Count Valkar and all the other prize-seekers that were looking to cash in on the bounty placed on his head. He had been told that the Lands of Chaos had no ruler, and he thought that was a perfect place to be. Little did he realize that his fate was not in his hands and the light was drawing together the pieces of destiny that were prophesied three hundred years in the past. Having been an orphan growing up with strangers, Daniel knew no family and found little desire for lasting relationships. He preferred to be alone and to trust only in himself. He greatly detested involvement with two distinct groups of people. In his mind rulers were to be avoided at all times and female companionship was meant to be uncomplicated and short--the shorter, the better. The light saw it differently, and not only were females in the plan, but these females were also the triumvirate matriarchal rulers of the Three Sisters, the most powerful nation in the Westward. They and the unholy monsters created by the dark lords were on an unexpected collision in the Lands of Chaos.

She wanted to experience college beyond her books – to be like her popular twin brother, Jackson. When Aiden, Jackson’s teammate and Everleigh’s crush, invites her to explore the old Waverly Psychiatric Hospital, she ignores her hesitations. Little did they know that Waverly was not as abandoned as everyone thinks. There is something sinister lurking behind those walls. It seems as if everyone who explores Waverly does not return. About the Author Macy grew up in Bucktown, Pennsylvania where the surrounding farms cultivated her love of horses. She graduated from Houghton University with a degree in equestrian performance and a minor in business administration. Growing up, Macy never had any interest in reading and writing, as these subjects were always difficult for her. Being diagnosed with dyslexia in the fourth grade provided an explanation for the struggle. With the support of great teachers and her family, she learned ways to overcome her disability. She started writing as a creative outlet and her new love for reading and writing produced the book you are reading today. When Macy isn’t writing, she can be found at the barn spoiling her two horses, Dezi and Phoebe.

Book excerpt: Authors Biography: In 2014 Rhonda’s art rose from the ashes of despair. An unbridled passion to paint led her to conquer her own personal heartache. Trusting the whispers deep within, she cathartically transferred her soul onto the canvas. Her art took on a life of its own, conveying resilience and emotional encouragement to the world. When she could not paint, she drew or took photographs. Writing each piece's story to deepen its message of promise. Soon after, she began selling locally and posting her work online. Her current social following exceeds 5600 people. In 2015 Rhonda intuitively switched from a critical care RN to one serving the mentally ill. Every day, every moment, she wonders, “Is there a better way to help people dealing with depression and anxiety? Is my art bigger than healing me?” These pages are her effort to transcend hope. “I Woke Up to FK Up” is about moving away from the consequences most of us suffer. At one point or another, we face trials. Struggles such as illness, addiction, betrayal, and bullying. Divorce, violence, neglect, judgement, or loss to name a few. These words and these images are about a transformation, a metamorphosis towards a better life. All graphics are her originals and words personally penned by Rhonda.

Book excerpt: This lively introduction to figurative language explains a broad range of concepts, including metaphor, metonymy, simile, and blending, and develops new tools for analyzing them. It coherently grounds the linguistic understanding of these concepts in basic cognitive mechanisms such as categorization, frames, mental spaces, and viewpoint; and it fits them into a consistent framework which is applied to cross-linguistic data and also to figurative structures in gesture and the visual arts. Comprehensive and practical, the book includes analyses of figurative uses of both word meanings and linguistic constructions. • Provides definitions of major concepts • Offers in-depth analyses of examples, exploring multiple levels of complexity • Surveys figurative structures in different discourse genres • Helps students to connect figurative usage with the conceptual underpinnings of language • Goes beyond English to explore cross-linguistic and cross-modal data
