Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Miller described himself as a confused, negligent, reckless, lusty, obscene, boisterous, thoughtful, scrupulous, lying, diabolically truthful man...filled with wisdom and nonsense. These letters, penned by the controversial author of Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn and Black Spring, represent Henry Miller's sexual and moral summing-up. They chart the infatuation, marriage and eventual disillusionment of Miller with his fifth wife Hoki Tokuda, a talented Japanese musician almost fifty years his junior. In its almost dangerous candor and its melancholy recognition of love's failure to sustain happiness, this volume deserves to be viewed as the culminating statement of Miller's interior life.

This volume comprehensively reviews the current eco-endorsementsystems for seafood products, described in four main sections withcontributions by leading experts from around the globe: • A full description of the background and history ofecolabels, ratings, guides and choice systems • Seafood evaluation and certification, including issues ofquality, costs and benefits • Highly significant case studies in the use of ecolabels, including details of programs undertaken with species such asPollock, Baja Red Spiny Lobster, and Patagonian Toothfish • The future of sustainable seafood Seafood Ecolabelling is an essential purchase for all thoseinvolved in fisheries and aquaculture management and productcertification and ecolabelling throughout the world. Professionalsincluding fishery scientists and managers, fish farm managers, marine biologists, environmental biologists, conservationbiologists, ecologists, natural resource managers, civil societyand sustainability governance practitioners, and resource andenvironmental economists will find this book to be extremelyvaluable. Professionals involved in the seafood trade, includingthose in production, packaging, reselling and seafood productlabelling, will find a great deal of commercial interest withinthis book. Book excerpt: The species of hake, making up the genus Merluccius, are commercially important and currently largely over exploited, with many stocks badly depleted and showing only limited signs of recovery. From the end of the 1990s, concepts such as sustainability, ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management, a code for the responsible conduct for fisheries, governance and others have emerged or have been considered by politicians, stakeholders and society. Moreover, new tools for stock assessment have been developed. But many hake stocks of the genus Merluccius show no sign of restoration. Hakes: Biology and Exploitation brings together a wealth of important information on the biology and exploitation of hake and hoki stocks around the world. Each chapter provides an overview of the fisheries of each species in an ecological and environmental context, looking at stock distribution, characteristics of the environment, life history, reproduction, diet, growth, mortality, pricing and markets of each geographical region and the hake species found there. With chapters written by regional experts on hake species and included within Wiley-Blackwell’s prestigious Fish and Aquatic Resources Series, Hakes: Biology and Exploitation provides up-to-date and comparative information, including new approaches to fisheries management, for all those involved in fisheries management, aquatic ecology and biological sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organization of the lexicon, and especially the relations between groups of lexemes is a strongly debated topic in linguistics. Some authors have insisted on the lack of any structure of the lexicon. In this vein, Di Sciullo & Williams (1987: 3) claim that “[t]he lexicon is like a prison – it contains only the lawless, and the only thing that its inmates have in commonis lawlessness”. In the alternative view, the lexicon is assumed to have a rich structure that captures all regularities and partial regularities that exist between lexical entries. Two very different schools of linguistics have insisted on the organization of the lexicon. On the one hand, for theories like HPSG (Pollard & Sag 1994), but also some versions of construction grammar (Fillmore & Kay 1995), the lexicon is assumed to have a very rich structure which captures common grammatical properties between its members. In this approach, a type hierarchy organizes the lexicon according to common properties between items. For example, Koenig (1999: 4, among others), working from an HPSG perspective, claims that the lexicon “provides a unified model for partial regularties, medium-size generalizations, and truly productive processes”. On the other hand, from the perspective of usage-based linguistics, several authors have drawn attention to the fact that lexemes which share morphological or syntactic properties, tend to be organized in clusters of surface (phonological or semantic) similarity (Bybee & Slobin 1982; Skousen 1989; Eddington 1996). This approach, often called analogical, has developed highly accurate computational and non-computational models that can predict the classes to which lexemes belong. Like the organization of lexemes in type hierarchies, analogical relations between items help speakers to make sense of intricate systems, and reduce apparent complexity (Köpcke & Zubin 1984). Despite this core commonality, and despite the fact that most linguists seem to agree that analogy plays an important role in language, there has been remarkably little work on bringing together these two approaches. Formal grammar traditions have been very successful in capturing grammatical behaviour, but, in the process, have downplayed the role analogy plays in linguistics (Anderson 2015). In this work, I aim to change this state of affairs. First, by providing an explicit formalization of how analogy interacts with grammar, and second, by showing that analogical effects and relations closely mirror the structures in the lexicon. I will show that both formal grammar approaches, and usage-based analogical models, capture mutually compatible relations in the lexicon.
