Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s we witnessed the birth of one of the most complex and perplexing social problems faced by modern society: the epidemic of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Originally published in 1993 this title looks at the social psychology surrounding HIV and AIDS. The organization of the volume centres upon two themes: The Theoretical Roots of Prevention and The Dilemma of the PWA (person with AIDS). The goal of this volume is not to evaluate previous attempts to answer these social problems, but to provide theoretical analyses of some of the basic sociopsychological processes that underlie the problems. Over 20 years on this is a snapshot of research into HIV and AIDS and attitudes of the time looking at social problems that are very much still with us.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Clinical Nursing Research by : Ada Sue Hinshaw
Download or read book Handbook of Clinical Nursing Research written by Ada Sue Hinshaw and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1999-06-18 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious and long-awaited volume brings together foremost nursing scholars, researchers, and educators to review and critique the state of research across areas most relevant to clinical practice. The contributorship appears as a veritable "who′s who" of nursing research and the contents comprise primary areas in the vanguard of nursing science. In the first section, the authors explore theoretical issues, the variety of philosophical approaches to scientific inquiry in nursing, factors shaping nursing research, and the relationship of the philosophical perspectives to research methodologies. In later sections, the scientists review and analyze the state of nursing science in relation to community health, practice strategies, family care, health promotion, biobehavioral investigations, women′s health, gerontologic nursing, and health system perspectives and outcomes. For physiological as well as psychological research, the most relevant theories driving the research are presented along with the review of multiple diverse instruments and measurement issues. Comprehensive in scope, cogent and truly thought provoking, a book such as the Handbook of Clinical Nursing Research arrives only once or twice in a career. It is a must-have shelf reference for every nurse and for those who would teach them.

Book Synopsis Sexual Health and Black College Students by : Naomi M. Hall
Download or read book Sexual Health and Black College Students written by Naomi M. Hall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the various psychosocial, sociocultural, and contextual factors that affect the sexual health of Black students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and how this environment can help develop strategies to improve sexual health outcomes for its students. The college environment provides young people with a new sense of independence, self-determination, and peer pressure to engage in risky sexual behaviors, and research has shown that Black students at HBCUs bear a disproportionate burden of poorer sexual health outcomes than students at predominately white institutions (PWIs). Uniquely focusing on the sexual milieu of Black students, Hall-Byers explains why a better understanding of these settings is needed to guide successful interventions that benefit and support the sexual health of Black students. Chapters compare data and research on sexual health outcomes of young Black men and women in comparison to those at predominately white institutions, as well as looking at the role of HBCU campus contexts and cultures, the potential psychosocial and sociocultural influences, what culturally responsive approaches may look like, and recommendations on how HBCU campuses can increase positive sexual health, such as through access, collaborative efforts among administrative offices, and reallocating resources. Sexual Health and Black College Students aims to advance the translation of culturally grounded research into effective practice and is essential reading for researchers and practitioners in sex therapy, public health, and social science as well as for college health staff, including nurses, student affairs, and campus wellness centers.

Download or read book Historically Black Colleges and Universities written by M. Gasman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Black colleges and universities play a vital role in the education of African Americans in the United States. For nearly 150 years, these institutions have trained the leadership of the Black community, graduating the nation s African American teachers, doctors, lawyers, and scientists. Despite the wealth of new research on Black colleges, there are topics that remain untouched and accomplishments that go unnoticed by the scholarly community. The chapters in this edited volume focus on topics that deserve further attention and that will push students, scholars, policymakers, and Black college administrators to reexamine their perspectives on and perceptions of Black colleges.
