Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester, Massachusetts It is true that local self-government, in a modified form, had been known both in Germany and England before the earliest colonization of America. But long before that colonization commenced the Crown had, by repeated encroachments, deprived the people of their ancient right of self-control, and that right or power had been vested in municipal councils or other local boards, and which were self-perpetuating bodies.3 But when removed from the presence of that domi nating power of the few over the many, the colonists at once returned to what has been called the natural order of society in the establishment of government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings From the Sources of the History of the Second Parish, Worcester, Massachusetts The religious society which is known as The Second Parish in the town of Worcester, originated in a voluntary association of sixty-seven persons, formed in March, 1785. The first meeting of the society for public worship was held on the third Sunday of this month, and it was incorporated by an act of the General Court, passed November 13, 1787. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Worcester in the War of the Rebellion The origin of this work may be stated in few words. In the early autumn of last year, I consulted several gentlemen of this city in relation to a history of Worcester during the late civil war. I found that, in the opinion of these gentlemen, some of whom were prominent as military veterans, such a work was very desirable; that it ought to he prepared immediately while the actors in the contest were alive to give correct information; and that all those who might be considered competent to do the work, were otherwise employed. Several were pleased to speak words of encouragement to me in relation to the undertaking. Having had some experience in writing local history, and finding pleasure in the employment, I concluded to begin the volume which is now completed. And I gratefully add that the gentlemen already referred to, and others with whom the preparation of this history has brought me into occasional intercourse, have constantly given me the favor of their encouragement, and when sought for, the aid of their suggestions. The design of the work is to give a complete history of Worcester in the war against the rebellion, from the beginning to the close. Such a history should include all that was done at home, as well as in the field, in aiding the general government to suppress the rebellion. Download or read book History of Princeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts written by Jeremiah Lyford Hamford and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Princeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts: Civil and Ecclesiastical; From Its First Settlement in 1739, to April 1852 In the following pages the author has aimed to present a brief, yet distinct statement, of the prominent events in the history of the town of Princeton. Particular attention has been directed to the various trials, toils, and hardships of the early settlers, - to the spirited resolutions and acts of the citizens in the period of the revolution, - to the difficulties that presented themselves in the organization of our federal government, as far as they had to do with the acts of the people, - to the ecclesiastical history, - and to tracing the progress of the town in its march of prosperity through the period of years which have rolled onward since the first settlement. Throughout the composition, he has confined himself almost exclusively to facts - having his eye upon the original documents - which, so far as he is capable of judging himself, have been presented with entire impartiality. The work was commenced and prosecuted with an ardent desire to benefit and interest, not only the citizens of this town, but also those of the adjoining towns, and of the State generally. It is true that this is a local history; yet the reminiscences of events that have transpired in this vicinity, anecdotes of men who have lived here, the record of their manners and habits, all constitute tributary stream to the general current of our country's history, "All history should be, and American history in particular must be, the history of the people. Download or read book The History of Princeton, Worcester County, Mass written by Charles Theodore Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Princeton, Worcester County, Mass: From Its First Settlement; With a Sketch of the Present Religious Controversy in That Place, Designed for the Use of the Inhabitants The history of a town, and that not a conspicuous one among its neighbors, cannot be expected to contain much of general interest. Aware of this fact, I have endeavored to keep it constantly in view, in the preparation of the accompanying hasty sketch, which now seeks the preservation of the press, without the notoriety of publication. I have aimed only to write a "plain, unvarnished tale," and, having nothing to amuse the stranger, have studied only to interest the inhabitants. In this, I am far from confident of success. If I have entirely failed, I can only wish my readers an abundant share of that happy disposition, of "taking the will for the deed," in which, at least, I hope for security. As I have written in the hurried intervals of more pressing employments, following, in most cases, as nearly as possible, the language of the documents and persons, from whom my facts come, I have not aimed at any embellishments. That the accompanying pages should be elegant, I cannot hope; that they may be fully intelligible, is all I expect.
