Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woodstock, Vermont More than twenty years ago I prepared and published in the Vermont Standard a sketch of the first meeting-house erected in Woodstock, called The Old Log meeting-house. This sketch was followed by others of similar character, till at length a large amount of matter of some local interest had been collected. About this time, my old friend and schoolmate, F red erick Billings, urged that the material thus collected should be utilized, and, with other material relating to the history of Woodstock, be embodied in a book. To his earnest solicitations it is due that the volume here presented to the public was pre pared; and it is proper to add that Mr. Billings has been at the whole expense of its publication. Born in the village of Woodstock in 1823, I have passed all my life in this place, excepting about eight years next after my graduation at Dartmouth College in 1849, which were spent at the South in teaching. Many of the incidents and characters, if not the greater part, mentioned in the following pages, are there fore familiar to me from personal recollection; and, from this fact, the narrative may embrace many things of more interest to me than they can be to the general reader. Book excerpt: Set in outstanding natural beauty, many Vermont communities have a unique sense of history and place, and Woodstock has long been considered among the most vibrant and beautiful of them all. Nestled within the eastern foothills of the Green Mountains and the Ottauquechee River valley, from the time of its founding in 1761, the story of Woodstock has been a tapestry rich with culture, architecture, and events. Early in the town’s development, Woodstock was designated by Vermont as the seat of government for Windsor County, and in turn, this brought an influx of lawyers and other professionals together with business and real estate entrepreneurs. The joining of several early turnpikes in Woodstock meant more travelers through town. In years after 1875, when the Woodstock Railway opened, the town became an even greater hub for tourists and those on business. By the early 20th century, Woodstock with its great scenic beauty was recognized as a premier destination for year-round recreation.

Woodstock is endowed with rare natural beauty enhanced by the absence of visible electric lines and historic preservation efforts maintain the quaint vintage appearance of Woodstock and surrounding communities. The four seasons of New England supply constant change in temperature and appearance, each season seemingly more resplendent than the previous. Although continuously in motion, life here seems more relaxed than many other communities. A host of cultural events, many revolving around the central green, blend with an active artistic community to keep Woodstock interesting. Idyllic Woodstock has so much charm and character that it is constantly being rediscovered as a dream village to live in and visit.

Book excerpt: Charles Morris Cobb grew up on the road he called Rum Street in a hardscrabble hill farm community just two miles, but worlds away from the prosperous village of Woodstock, Vermont. For 13 years he recorded the stories of his neighborhood, providing a rarely seen look at the food, work, avocations, spiritual life, and struggles of a group of people whose story is seldom told. This book is an authentic look at life in 1850s Vermont, told from the point of view of a sensitive teenage boy as he struggled to make a life for himself in New England's world of 19th century music.

Book excerpt: The definitive account of the most famous music festival of all time: Woodstock. “[A] vivid and lively account of those hectic and historic three days….The best fly-on-the-wall account, tantamount to having had a backstage pass to an iconic event.” —New York Post The Woodstock music festival of 1969 is an American cultural touchstone, and no book captures the sights, sounds, and behind-the-scenes machinations of the historic gathering better than Michael Lang’s New York Times bestseller, The Road to Woodstock. USA Today calls this fascinating, entertaining, and blissfully nostalgic look back, “Invaluable.” In The Road to Woodstock, Michael Lang recaptures the magic for the generation that was there…and for the generations that followed. Just in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock festival, this definitive volume tells you everything you need to know about the most famous three days in music history.
