Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete history of the viceroys of Ireland, the only other book on the subject being the late Sir John T. Gilbert's, which was published in 1864. But as he dealt with the viceroys between 1172 and 1509 only, his book has no claim to completeness. In common with all writers on Ireland, however, I must express my acknowledgments to Gilbert. His keen and discerning research work, covering the first two hundred years of the viceroyalty, has been of the utmost value to me. Irish affairs appear certain to monopolize public and parliamentary attention this year, and on this account I think that the history of the men who have ruled Ireland for nearly seven hundred and fifty years will be read with interest. Of the illustrations, that of Lord Aberdeen is from a photograph by M. Lafayette of Dublin and London, who has also supplied the photographs of Lady Aberdeen, Lords Dudley, Spencer, Londonderry, Cadogan, and Crewe, King Edward at the {x} Dublin Exhibition, and those of the Viceregal Lodge, St. Patrick's Hall, and the Throne Room in Dublin Castle. All the other illustrations are from photographs of the originals in the National Portrait Gallery, Dublin.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Viceroys of Ireland Even with the aid of accurate catalogues, the elimination of truths, and the collation of evi deuces in writings, ranging from the twelfth to the fifteenth century, in Gaelic, obsolete Latin, and Anglo - Norman, is a task involving serious labour. Such work, moreover, demands special knowledge, to be acquired only by a long and careful study of the languages and bearings of antique documents. Book excerpt: For centuries, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, or viceroy, was the representative of the British monarch in Ireland. For almost every viceroy who served at Dublin Castle there was also a vicereine; a wife who served with him. Once prominent in Irish life, the vicereines and their legacies are now almost entirely overlooked. This book sets out to recapture their lost stories by exploring the portraits and personal objects they left behind. Opulently dressed and elegantly posed, the women who gaze out from these paintings were often as dynamic, bold and influential as their husbands during their time at the apex of Irish society. They were activists, artists and aid workers; international campaigns to prevent famine in Ireland, the design of interiors, the popularisation of Irish fabrics at the royal courts of Europe and the development of hospitals were just some of their now overlooked achievements. Featuring critical essays by leading experts, analytical readings of key artworks and objects, and stunning colour portraits of the protagonists themselves, Vicereines of Ireland uncovers the considerable contributions these women behind the throne made to the social and cultural life o
