Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Seventy-Ninth Regiment: Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War of Eighteen Sixty-One in the United States The committee selected by the Regimental Association of the 79th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers to prepare the history of the regiment has completed its work, and submits it to the surviving members of the regiment and to the surviving representatives of our deceased comrades, and to all others who may be interested. This has not been an easy task. The years of very active service of the regiment and the great events and battles in which it took a part make it difficult to write the history of the regiment without writing the history of the civil war of 1861. After very careful consideration, the committee decided to limit its work to a narration of the experiences and service of the one regiment, so far as could possibly be done. One other question about which the committee was deeply concerned was to do justice to the individual men in the regiment in the record of honorable and dishonorable service. It was decided to present the muster-out roll of the field and staff and of each company, with the record as the officers of the companies had themselves made it at the time of the muster-out of the regiment.
