Book excerpt: This new, revised and expanded edition brings back into print an excellent resource for those interested in the history of the RIC and the revolutionary period generally. In the period 1816 to 1922 some 85,000 men served in the RIC and its predecessor forces. Information on all these policemen is available, constituting a quarry for their descendants in Ireland, the US and elsewhere. The book consists of chapters on the history of policing in Ireland (to illustrate the type of men in the Force, their background and their lifestyle etc.), followed by a section on 'Tracing your ancestors in the RIC'. New appendices to this edition identify members of the RIC who were rewarded for their service during the Young Ireland Rising, 1848; the Fenian Rising, 1867; the Easter Rising, 1916; and the War of Independence, 1919-21. Also members of the RIC who volunteered for service in the Mounted Staff Corps and the Commissariat during the Crimean War; members who served as drivers and orderlies on secondment to the Irish Hospital in the South African War in 1900; and members who served in the British Army in the First World War are identified. RIC recipients of the King George V, Coronation (Police) Medal, 1911; the Constabulary Medal; and the Kings Police Medal are listed, as are ex-RIC men who transferred to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1922 and received additional bravery medals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Royal Irish Constabulary It appears to us that the time has arrived when a complete History of the Irish Constabulary, not only may be, but ought to be written. Many of the younger members of the force - indeed many, perhaps, of those who can scarcely be called the younger members - know comparatively little of the origin and infancy of the force to which they belong. Many of those who joined it along with ourselves have left it altogether, and lost all interest in it except their quarter day's pension; while some - alas! not a few of our contemporaries - have passed away to that country where experience was born of God, and which no Act of Parliament can alter or 'amend.' Excerpt: ... the history of the royal irish constabulary. chapter I. ppsition of matters previous to the formation of the constabulary. early half a century is a long time to look back upon, in describing the first formation of an institution; nevertheless, the origin, progress, and maturity of the Irish constabulary can readily be traced. It will not be necessary to enter into a minute detail of the several attempts which were made, from time to time, by the legislature, to form a system of police calculated to meet the requirements of the state of Ireland, at a period of from twenty to thirty years previous to the formation of the Irish constabulary. To give a short summary of the different Acts of Parliament which were passed with the pro A fessed object of preserving the peace, and a few of their leading provisions, will be sufficient--indeed one of them was universally known as 'the Peace Preservation Act.' In 1787, an Act was passed--the 27th of Geo. iii., ch. 40, entitled, 'An Act for the better Execution of the Law, and the Preservation of the Peace within Counties at large.' This Act empowered the Lord Lieutenant to appoint a chief constable to each one or more baronies; while the grand juries had power given to them to appoint sixteen sub-constables to each of the same districts; and it was a provision in the Act that they should be Protestants. They were entitled to a sum of three-pence a mile for the conveyance of all prisoners whom they might apprehend, f

Book excerpt: Formed out of the Royal Irish Constabulary at the time of Partition, the RUC's history is predictably a turbulent one right through to its replacement in 2001 by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Few police forces in the world have suffered so grievously as the RUC and this book is a fitting memorial to the sacrifices made in the interests of the civil population it was determined to protect. Throughout its history, it has not only had to perform normal police duties but contain the ever present IRA threat. In 1969, the climate changed and ushered in a new and even more violent era of sectarian strife. The emergence of extreme nationalist organizations posed grave problems and, with the RUC in a prime role, the position of the Chief Constable was hugely important. This book tells the story of a remarkable police force without fear or favor. Ironically its reward for containing a hugely challenging internal security situation and at the same time policing the community traditionally was its disbandment.

Book excerpt: IN JANUARY 1919, AT SOLOHEADBEG IN TIPPERARY, two members of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) were killed by the IRA. In the four bloody years that followed, nearly 500 RIC men were killed and hundreds more wounded. In Tipperary alone, 46 policemen were killed, making it one of most violent counties in Ireland. The popular image of the RIC is that they were the 'eyes and ears of Dublin Castle', an oppressive colonial force policing its fellow countrymen. But the truth is closer to home: many were Irishmen who joined because it was a secure job with prospects and a pension at the end of service. When confronted with a volunteer army of young and dedicated guerrilla fighters, it was unable to cope. When the conflict ended, the RIC was disbanded, not at the insistence of the Provisional Government, but of its own members. 46 Men Dead is a thought-provoking look at the grim reality of the conflict in Tipperary, a microcosm of the wider battle that was the War of Independence.

Book excerpt: Published for the first time, this memoir by a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) provides many insights into life as an Irish policeman in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, during Ireland's turbulent years of the Land War right up to the Irish War of Independence. Thomas Fennell (1857-1948) paints a lively picture of the daily activities of a highly regimented force, constantly under hierarchical scrutiny from Dublin Castle. He is acutely aware of the ambivalent position of the RIC drawn largely from the sons of tenant and small farmers yet supporting the Ascendancy and the landowning classes. Fennell was a nationalist yet retained a loyalty to and pride in the force. He also contrasts the sympathetic attitude of the general population to the police during the Land War with the more hostile response after 1916. He counters the critics who ascertained that the RIC was engaged in espionage on behalf of the State, makes the points that the RIC provided no advance of the Rising of 1916, and that any such spying as occurred was on behalf of Collins, echoing the experience of Michael Davitt during the Land War. -- Publisher description.
