Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Public Schools of Stockton, California The writer entered the schools of Stockton in her thirteenth year and, since that time, with the exception of four years spent in special study, has been closely connected with them as pupil and teacher. Having thus grown up with the schools, her interest in their progress has been deep, yet the idea of marking their footsteps in words was due to no conception of her own, but to the suggestion of that tireless worker in their upbuilding, Superintendent James A. Barr. To Mr. Barr's kindly placing at my disposal the records of the Board of Education, the documents filed in his office and his private collection of newspaper clippings, old manuals and manuscripts, must be traced a large part of the information embodied in this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in California: Its Origin and Development, With Personal Reminiscences of Half a Century After my retirement from active public - school service, a number of my friends urged me, as a matter of duty that I owed to my profession, to prepare for publication a volume which should include an outline of my long and varied experience in educational affairs. Rather reluctantly, I finally ventured on the experiment of writing a book in which the personal narrative should be made the thread for binding together various educational footnotes, including sketches of the common schools and rural academies which I attended in New Hampshire about the middle of the nineteenth century, and also the salient points in the development of public schools in California, the state which opened for me the gate of opportunity. It has not been easy for me to write about my own work, and I have ceased 'to wonder why the autobiographies of American public school teachers are so few in number. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Progress of the Public School Department of the City of Sacramento: 1849 1893; Also Annual Report of the Board of Education 1894 It may here be proper to remark, as a matter of historical interest, that San Francisco was the first place in the State to organize, independently of State law, a free public school. The ayuntamiento, or city council, adopted, on April 8, 1850, the following ordinance, drawn by Hugh C. Murray, afterward Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court, and it was the first ordinance of the kind passed in California. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed.
