Book Synopsis Analysis of Material Removal Processes by : Warren R. DeVries
Download or read book Analysis of Material Removal Processes written by Warren R. DeVries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal removal processes - cutting and grinding in this book - are an integral part of a large number of manufacturing systems, either as the primary manufacturing process, or as an important part of preparing the tooling for other manufacturing processes. In recent years, industry and educational institutions have concentrated on the metal removal system, perhaps at the expense of the process. This book concentrates on metal removal processes, particularly on the modeling aspects that can either give a direct answer or suggest the general requirements as to how to control, improve or change a metal removal process. This modeling knowledge is more important with automated computer controlled systems than it has ever been before, because quantitative knowledge is needed to design and operate these systems. This senior undergraduate/graduate textbook is aimed at providing the quantitative knowledge, often times at an elementary level, for handling the technological aspects of setting up and operating a metal removal process and interpreting the experience of planning, operating and improving a metal removal process based on rule of thumb approaches.

Book Synopsis Fifty Years of Medieval Technology and Social Change by : Steven A. Walton
Download or read book Fifty Years of Medieval Technology and Social Change written by Steven A. Walton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a series of papers at Kalamazoo as well as some contributed papers inspired by the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Lynn White Jr.’s, Medieval Technology and Social Change (1962), a slim study which catalyzed the study of technology in the Middle Ages in the English-speaking world. While the initial reviews and decades-long fortune of the volume have been varied, it is still in print and remains a touchstone of an idea and a time. The contributors to the volume, therefore, both investigate the book itself and its fate, and look at new research furthering and inspired by White’s work. The book opens with an introduction surveying White’s career, with a bibliography of his work, as well as some opening thoughts on the study of medieval technology in the last fifty years. Three papers then deal explicitly with the reception and longevity of his work and its impact on medieval studies more generally. Then five papers look at new cast studies areas where White’s work and approach has had a particular impact, namely, medieval technology studies and medieval rural/ ecological studies.
Book Synopsis The Working People of Paris, 1871-1914 by : Lenard Berlanstein
Download or read book The Working People of Paris, 1871-1914 written by Lenard Berlanstein and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. In The Working People of Paris, 1871–1914, Lenard Berlanstein examines how technological advances, expanding industrialization, bureaucratization, and urban growth affected the lives of the working poor and near poor of one of the world's most influential cities during an era of intense social and cultural change. Berlanstein departs from other historians of the working classes in treating, in a parallel manner, not only craftsmen and factory laborers but also service workers and lower-level white-collar employees. Avoiding the fallacy of letting the city limits set the boundaries of an urban study, he deals also with the industrial suburbs, with their considerable concentration of workers, to examine the transformation of the work, leisure, and consumer experiences of the people who did not own property and who lived from one payday to the next during the Second Industrial Revolution. The Working People of Paris describes a cycle of adaptation and resistance to the forces of economic maturation. For several decades after 1871, Berlanstein argues, working people and employees preserved accommodations with management about reciprocal rights in the workplace. By the beginning of the twentieth century, however, these forms of adaptation had broken down under new economic pressures. The result was a crisis of discipline in the workplace, as wage earners and modest clerks began to challenge managerial authority. Berlanstein's study confronts the widely accepted view that, during this period, workers became better integrated into a society of improving standards of living and mass leisure. Instead, he documents uneven patterns of material progress and growing conflict over work roles among all sorts of laboring people.

Book Synopsis Science and Civilisation in China, Part 2, Mechanical Engineering by : Joseph Needham
Download or read book Science and Civilisation in China, Part 2, Mechanical Engineering written by Joseph Needham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1965-01-02 with total page 1022 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Dr Needham's immense undertaking gathers momentum it has been found necessary to subdivide volumes into parts, each to be bound and published separately. The first part of Volume 4, already published, deals with the physical sciences; the second with the diverse applications of physics in the many branches of mechanical engineering; and the third will deal with civil and hydraulic engineering and nautical technology. With this part of Volume 4, then, we come to the application by the Chinese of physical principles in the control of forces and in the use of power; we cross the frontier separating tools from the machine. We have already noticed that the ancient Chinese concept of chhi (somewhat similar to the pneuma of the Greeks) asserted itself prominently in acoustics; but we discover here that the Chinese tendency to think pneumatically was also responsible for a whole range of brilliant technological achievements, for example, the double-acting piston-bellows, the rotary winnowing-fan, and the water-powered metallurgical blowing-machine (ancestor of the steam-engine); as well as for some extraordinary insights and predictions in aeronautics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive analysis of work and the workforce in the United States, from the Industrial Revolution to the era of globalization. This comprehensive two-volume reference book is the first to analyze the central role of work and the workforce in U.S. life from the Industrial Revolution through today's information economy. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—economics, public policy, law, human and civil rights, cultural studies, and organizational psychology—its 256 entries examine key events, concepts, institutions, and individuals in labor history. Entries also tackle tough contemporary questions that reflect the conflicts inherent in capitalism. What is the impact of work on families and communities? On minority and immigrant populations? How shall we respond to changing work roles and the growing influence of the transnational corporation? Work in America describes and evaluates attempts to address social and class issues—affirmative action, occupational health and safety, corporate management science, and trade unionism and organized labor—and offers the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to discover workable solutions.
