Download or read book The Army in India and the Development of Frontier Warfare, 1849-1947 written by T. Moreman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-08-10 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study is the first scholarly account explaining how the British and Indian armies adapted to the peculiar demands of fighting an irregular tribal opponent in the mountainous no-man's-land between India and Afghanistan. It does so by discussing how a tactical doctrine of frontier fighting was developed and 'passed on' to succeeding generations of soldiers. As this book conclusively demonstrates this form of colonial warfare always exerted a powerful influence on the organisation, equipment, training and ethos of the Army in India.

Book Synopsis Sons of John Company by : John Gaylor
Download or read book Sons of John Company written by John Gaylor and published by Spellmount, Limited Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Stort set siden selvstændigheden har de to lande været i mere eller mindre væbnet konflikt med hinanden "behind ramparts of ever-more expensive stockpiles of imported weaponry. Despite this, the same jawans remains in the ranks, still proud of their military calling and still in their old bataillions, bearing in some cases still the names of the British officers who raised them a century ago. This book endeavour to show how the Indian Army was created and what happened to it after Partition until the present day."
Book Synopsis Indian Army in the First World War by : Alan Jeffreys
Download or read book Indian Army in the First World War written by Alan Jeffreys and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the important global role of the Indian Army during the First World War. It is an academic reassessment of the army by both established and early career scholars of the Indian Army, as well as naval historians. It looks at the historiography of the army - taking into account the recent work on the army (particularly on the Western Front in 1914-1915). The edited volume covers the traditional areas of the Indian Army on the Western Front, in Palestine, Mesopotamia and the defence of the Suez Canal; however, there are also chapters on combined operations; Indian prisoners of war in Germany and Turkey; the expansion of the officer corps; and the Sikh experience, as well as the mobilisation of the equine army at the beginning of the war and the demobilisation of the army in the period from 1918 until 1923. Three additional chapters are related to the theme, such as the role of the Royal Indian Marine; the Territorial Army in India; and Churchill’s portrayal of the Indian Army during the Gallipoli campaign in his account The World Crisis.

Download or read book Action at Badama Post written by Paul Macro and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling account of the rescue of RAF crewmen after their aircraft crashes in Afghanistan in 1919. This is the story of an unknown incident during the little-known Third Afghan War. An aircraft from the No. 20 Squadron RAF was lost while investigating gathering tribesman. The crew were rescued, and most of the aircraft was recovered by the Kurram Militia and the 22nd Battery Motor Machine Gun Service. It was an all-arms action—the lives of two airmen were saved at the cost of an Indian Militiaman and an unknown number of Afghan tribesmen. It also illustrates the experience of a virtually unknown group of soldiers, the 22nd Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service. They had volunteered to serve as Motor Machine Gunners in France, had been through an intense, competitive, and sometimes costly selection process, and had now suddenly found themselves dispatched half way round the globe to the heat, dust, snows and monsoons of India and the North-West Frontier. This book examines the conflict’s background, the Kurram Militia, the history of the squadron and the lives of the key players. While this was not the only action the 22nd Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service fought during the Third Afghan War, this one was recorded in the account of A/Sjt Ernest “Bill” Macro, who was in charge of the section of 22nd Battery dispatched to Badama Post in late July 1919. This is his story, and the stories of the other men for whom the climax of their experience in the Third Afghan War came during the action at Badama Post
