Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Freed Family They would think of their childhood, early manhood and early womanhood; realizing the thought of home, of yes, my native land, I love thee. War between the Germans on the one side, and the French and English on the other side, is now raging with terrible slaughter on the same battlefield (september 1, I have been gathering historic fragments relating to Freeds in this country, and the ancestors of our family in this country for more than thirty years. As I am past fourscore years old, it seems time to arrange and connect these fragments, so as to give you a brief history, of both male and female ancestors and descendants of the Freed family and the relations on the mother's side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Partial History of the Freed Family and Connecting Families It was my design to give you a record, not only of the Freed Family, but of all the different branches of which all our relatives are com posed. Altogether, they make a happy and. Pleasant union. I am happy to state that all of our ancestors, both male and female, with out one exception as far as I was able to asoer tain, were Mennonites But I am sorry to note that many persons that were reared in Mennonite families chose to unite themselves to other denominations. Some perhaps to have an easier way to Heaven; others again thought that even the Mennonites were not strict enough for them. And even at times large numbers left the Old Mennonite Church in a block, and started up new denominations; but, almost in variably, they tenaciously stuck to the word Mennonite as one of the prefixes, or affixes, as a nomenclature for their denomination. But are not willing to conform to the Old Mennonite confession of faith. But we have no ill will or malice toward any person or denomination. We have nothing but charity and love for all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glenns: A Family History In a merely worldly View, the reasoning of the last mentioned lady, that her son would probably be better cared for by his uncle than by her new husband and herself, was not far from correct. For no father ever watched more carefully or guarded more scrupulously the education of his son, than did Abram that of both his nephews. His 'want of experience and solitary habits may, in a measure, have unfitted him for the task of guide and protector; but so far as his knowledge and ability extended, no parent could exceed him in zeal and vigilance. If he erred culpably in anything, it was in allowing both his wards a rather free command of money. He thought, and very correctly, that denying them could but produce one of two re sults, it would either lower their standard of self-respect, thus drfing their characters an irreparable injury, by the comparison they would not fail to make between their own stinted allowance and the more liberal supply of their companions - or it would tempt them to equivocal and perhaps criminal means of obtaining that which their boyish feelings represented as indispensable. In either event their characters would be seriously, perhaps per manently Injured, and in the one case probably as vitally as in the other. He knew the pride of the race, and he was too sen sible a man not to know that what would ruin a boy of one temperament, would only develope and improve one of another. He had never fallen into the stupid, pedagogical mistake founded upon the astonishing wisdom of the truism, that boys are boys - that all children must be subjected alike to the same discipline. He was accordingly sensible that refusing his wards the means of gratifying their harmless, boyish wants, would so touch their pride and beat their naturally warm blood, that they might be hurried into faults for'whichyears of repentance could not atone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free at Last N presenting this book to the public, no apology is Offered for selecting, as my themes, subjects that have been used over and over again. The slave problem is settled, but the drink is still an unsolved question before the American people. My interest in the colored people dates from early childhood, at the family altar, where the Father Of Mercies was daily asked, That the yoke might be broken, and the oppressed go free. In the National Era I read to my father the stirring speeches Of Congressmen, and I heard the subject Of slavery discussed in the pulpit and on the platform. At the Open ing Of the war I saw the gathering forces on the border land; heard the cry, TO arms; visited the sick in the hospital made shirtsand scraped lint for the wounded. I rejoice that my father's family would not accept of slaves left them, but set them free. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bondspeople who fled from slavery during and after the Civil War did not expect that their flight toward freedom would lead to sickness, disease, suffering, and death. But the war produced the largest biological crisis of the nineteenth century, and as historian Jim Downs reveals in this groundbreaking volume, it had deadly consequences for hundreds of thousands of freed people. In Sick from Freedom, Downs recovers the untold story of one of the bitterest ironies in American history--that the emancipation of the slaves, seen as one of the great turning points in U.S. history, had devastating consequences for innumerable freed people. Drawing on massive new research into the records of the Medical Division of the Freedmen's Bureau-a nascent national health system that cared for more than one million freed slaves-he shows how the collapse of the plantation economy released a plague of lethal diseases. With emancipation, African Americans seized the chance to move, migrating as never before. But in their journey to freedom, they also encountered yellow fever, smallpox, cholera, dysentery, malnutrition, and exposure. To address this crisis, the Medical Division hired more than 120 physicians, establishing some forty underfinanced and understaffed hospitals scattered throughout the South, largely in response to medical emergencies. Downs shows that the goal of the Medical Division was to promote a healthy workforce, an aim which often excluded a wide range of freedpeople, including women, the elderly, the physically disabled, and children. Downs concludes by tracing how the Reconstruction policy was then implemented in the American West, where it was disastrously applied to Native Americans. The widespread medical calamity sparked by emancipation is an overlooked episode of the Civil War and its aftermath, poignantly revealed in Sick from Freedom.
