Excerpt: ...served until mustered out November 9, 1898. James E. Payne. Frank B. Pauley. Captain Charles T. O'Brien. Company A. Charles Francis O'Brien was born in Worcester, Mass., November 14, 1867, and was educated in the public schools of that city. In September, 1883, he removed to Kansas City and was employed in a clothing store until the following year, when he secured a position as clerk in Bradstreet's Commercial Agency. Applying himself here with notable care and industry he soon raised himself to the place of chief clerk. In 1885, fired with the hope of acquiring wealth through the great real estate boom that was then setting ninety per cent of Kansas City wild, he gave up his situation with Bradstreets and associated himself with Mr. George Law, subsequently engaging in the real estate business for himself. When the collapse came he was strictly in it, but pulled through without material loss. In 1892 he engaged in newspaper work on the Times. In 1893 he severed his connection with that paper and moved to California with his mother and lived near Los Angeles until the Fall of 1896, when he returned to Kansas City, reaching here in October. He easily secured his old position on the Times and was soon advanced to the work of city editor, a place he filled with marked ability. He was thus engaged when war was declared against Spain. As soon as Gen. Moore began the organization of the Fifth Missouri, Mr. O'Brien offered his services and the offer being accepted, commenced enlisting men for a company. When the company was sworn in he was chosen as its Captain. The following day he was assigned to duty as Quartermaster, at that time a very difficult position to fill. But he filled it with his usual ability, and many of the comforts the men...
Book Synopsis The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War by : Dennis W. Belcher
Download or read book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th Missouri Infantry distinguished itself as just the type of regiment the Union needed in the Civil War. Hard as nails and loyal to a fault, the men of the "Eagle Brigade" would follow their commanders "into hell if they ordered." They battled two Confederate regiments at Iuka, turned the tide at Battery Robinett at Corinth, assaulted the impossible Stockade Redan at Vicksburg as whole ranks of soldiers were cut down, and broke Hood's line at Nashville. Although the 11th Missouri ranks among the 300 top regiments of the Civil War, little of its history has been formally recorded. This study provides a detailed account of the regiment's four-and-a-half years of outstanding service and a roster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Civil War historians now agree that the guerrilla conflict shaped the entire war in significant ways. Some of these “bushwhackers”—Nathan Bedford Forrest, William Clarke Quantrill, John Singleton Mosby—have become quite infamous. Illiterate Sam Hildebrand, one of Missouri’s most notorious guerrillas—often compared to “Rob Roy,” and the subject of dime novels—was one of the few to survive the war and have his story taken down and published. Shortly after this he was killed in a barroom brawl. “I make no apology to mankind for my acts of retaliation; I make no whining appeal to the world for sympathy. I sought revenge and I found it; the key of hell was not suffered to rust in the lock while I was on the war path.” —Sam Hildebrand Hildebrand’s reign of terror gave the Union army fits and kept much of the Trans-Mississippi, especially Missouri, roiling in the 1860s. Over seven years of fighting he and his men killed dozens of soldiers and civilians, whites and blacks; he claimed to have killed nearly one hundred himself. He was accused of many heinous acts. The historical significance of Hildebrand’s story is substantial, but his bloody tale is eminently readable and stands quite well on its own as a cold-blooded portrait of a violent time in American history. Like the nightmarish and depraved world of the Kid in Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian, Hildebrand’s world is truly ruthless and his story is brutally descriptive in its coolly detached rendering of one man’s personal war. Published in 1870, Hildebrand’s autobiography has long been out of print and has been a rare and highly prized acquisition among Civil War

Book Synopsis Civil War St. Louis by : Louis S. Gerteis
Download or read book Civil War St. Louis written by Louis S. Gerteis and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2001-11-26 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Civil War, rough-and-tumble St. Louis played a key role as a strategic staging ground for the Union army. A citadel of free labor in a slave state, it also harbored deeply divided loyalties that mirrored those of its troubled nation. Until now, however, the fascinating story of wartime St. Louis has remained largely unchronicled. By the mid-nineteenth century, St. Louis had become the nation's greatest inland city, providing a "gateway to the West," a riverine crossroads for national commerce, and an ideal base for expansion-minded industrialists from the abolitionist Northeast. Yet as Louis Gerteis reveals, many of its citizens were staunchly dedicated to both slavery and the southern agrarian tradition. For them especially, federal martial law was an outrage, one that only served to nail the coffin shut on their loyalty to the Union. Gerteis's rich and engaging narrative encompasses a wide range of episodes and events involving the lynching of freeman Francis McIntosh and murder of publisher Elijah Lovejoy, the infamous Dred Scott saga (which began in St. Louis), city politics and martial law, battles in and around the city (at Camp Jackson, Wilson's Creek, and Pea Ridge), major river campaigns, manufacture of ironclad combat ships, prison camps and hospitals, and efforts to secure civil rights for blacks while denying the same to former Confederates who would not swear loyalty to the Union. Featuring famous figures like Thomas Hart Benton, John C. Fremont, Claiborne Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, and Sterling Price, Gerteis's study also sheds considerable light on the participation of women and the status of blacks throughout the conflict, offering gripping images of black and white Missourians contending with the issue of emancipation. Ultimately, Gerteis offers a compelling portrait of a war-torn city-teeming with wounded soldiers, displaced civilians, runaway slaves, federal prisoners, and profiteers-that was forever changed by its wartime experiences, even as it anchored Union victory in the west.
