Excerpt: ...have enjoyed for a few years the happy calm of a country parson's life, with his children growing up around him. Some of the most touching passages in his works show his own heartfelt experience of domestic happiness, which belongs chiefly to this time. "No man can tell," he says, "but he who loves his children, how many delicious accents make a man's heart dance in the pretty conversation of those dear pledges: their childishness, their stammering, their little angers, their innocence, their imperfections, their necessities, are so many little emanations of joy and comfort to him that delights in their persons and society." The years which Taylor spent at Uppingham were full of importance in the history of England. Charles I was compelled by the rebellion in Scotland to summon a Parliament, and apply for subsidies to raise an army. This measure he had postponed for eleven years, during which Lord Strafford had been his minister in civil matters, and Archbishop Laud in matters ecclesiastical; and both had strained the royal prerogative to establish despotic government. Meanwhile, the popular discontent had increased. Many conscientious men, unable to endure the state of things in England, sought a new home beyond the Atlantic. Those who remained were eager to take an opportunity of revenge; and among the first acts of the Long Parliament were the impeachment of Strafford and Laud. The policy of these ministers had tended to associate the Puritans in a common cause with the friends of constitutional liberty. It is probable that Laud's disposition was on the whole more tolerant than that of his adversaries; in fact, he was more hated for his indulgence to the Papists than for his harshness to the Puritans; and his...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Movements in the English Church Erastianism reigned almost supreme. The Church was looked upon as the creature of the State. Her spirit ual functions were subordinated to her social ones. There is no better picture of the life of the last Years of the centurv than that to be found in Jane Austen's novels, and there we see the clergyman at his best an amiable young man, with nothing to dis tinguish him from his sporting brother except a little better temper and a little gentler language, while at his worst he is an ignorant and pompous fool. If it be urged by any that the type is not yet extinct, it may at least be said that it is no longer taken as a matter of course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Nineteenth Century (1800-1833) It was impossible to investigate the history of the English Church in the eighteenth century without being carried forward into the nineteenth, especially when one loved, and believed in, the Church's system, and could not fail to see, towards the close of the earlier period, indications of the dawn of a brighter day. Hence, the materials for this volume have been accumulating for more than twenty years. During the whole of that time the subject, though amid many interruptions, has never been wholly absent from the writers mind; and his notes upon it swelled into such a vast mass, that they began to be in danger of becoming unmanageable. Nearly five years have elapsed since he began to put the mass into shape; and the result is at last presented to the public.
