Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compelling story of Canada’s Irish pioneers, revealing the enormous scope of their achievements. Beginning in the eighteenth century, an increasing number of Irish people sought the better life that Ontario and Quebec offered. Set free from the stifling economic and social constraints that held them back in their homeland, they prospered. And yet, strangely enough, they continue to be mourned as victims. In this second book of the Irish in Canada series, Lucille Campey takes on the victim-ridden mythology of destitute Irish immigrants fleeing the famine of the 1840s. In fact, the Irish influx to Quebec and Ontario began a century earlier. Comprehensive and extensive research has been distilled to produce an informative and lively account of this great immigration saga, whose roots date back to the time of the British Conquest of New France in 1763.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports in detail how a particular portion of the American wilderness developed into a settled farming community. To fully comprehend the history of the American people in the early national period, an understanding of this transformation from forest to community—and the pattern of life within such communities where the vast majority of the people live—is essential. Three major conclusions emerge from Philip L. White's study of Beekmantown, New York. First, the economic advantages of the frontier attracted a first generation of settlers relatively high in social and economic status, but the disappearance of frontier conditions brought a second generation of settlers appreciably lower in status. Second, White rejects the romantic notion that the frontier fostered equality and argues instead that the frontier's economic opportunities fostered inequality. Finally, in contrast to revisionist arguments, he affirms that in Beekmantown the Jacksonian period does indeed warrant characterization as the era of the "common man." This book represents a model in community history: the narrative is full of human interest; the scholarship is prodigious; the applications are universal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fast-moving narrative, taking place in the Regency era, brings to life contemporary issues of empire and international conflict and explores some of the major social issues of the time, such as colonialism and slavery. It vividly recreates the intimate life of a man on the edge of upper-class society, who became embroiled in the tumult of duels and adulterous liaisons. Drawing heavily on meticulously researched, fully notated and fully referenced primary material, the book ranges from the American Revolutionary War to the life of a naval officer in the fight against the tyranny of Napoleon, sharing the triumphs and hardships of life ashore and on board a man o’ war. James Murray’s mother, the extraordinary Eliza Smith, flies in the face of the conventional well-bred Regency lady as she claims mother status for six children from at least four different fathers and becomes a wealthy woman through her involvement in slave-based plantation agriculture. James’ father, the illegitimate offspring of the illustrious Elibank Murrays, was a British Army Officer who left a unique diary of his involvement in the American Revolutionary War. The story moves from early colonial settlement in Florida, Quebec and the Bahamas and ends in the Highlands, where James’ new wife becomes involved in a adulterous liaison. James, who was then challenged to two duels, succumbed to ill health and moved back to his childhood home in New Abbey in southwest Scotland. A Scion of Heroes is an easy-to-read but fully referenced and researched adult biography that will be of interest not only to biography aficionados but also to local history enthusiasts and students of social and military history of the Georgian period of British history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1776 more than two hundred Indian warriors descended the St. Lawrence River to attack Continental forces at the Cedars, west of Montreal. In just three days’ fighting, the Native Americans and their British and Canadian allies forced the American fort to surrender and ambushed a fatally delayed relief column. In Down the Warpath to the Cedars, author Mark R. Anderson flips the usual perspective on this early engagement and focuses on its Native participants—their motivations, battlefield conduct, and the event’s impact in their world. In this way, Anderson’s work establishes and explains Native Americans’ centrality in the Revolutionary War’s northern theater. Anderson’s dramatic, deftly written narrative encompasses decisive diplomatic encounters, political intrigue, and scenes of brutal violence but is rooted in deep archival research and ethnohistorical scholarship. It sheds new light on the alleged massacre and atrocities that other accounts typically focus on. At the same time, Anderson traces the aftermath for Indian captives and military hostages, as well as the political impact of the Cedars reaching all the way to the Declaration of Independence. The action at the Cedars emerges here as a watershed moment, when Indian neutrality frayed to the point that hundreds of northern warriors entered the fight between crown and colonies. Adroitly interweaving the stories of diverse characters—chiefs, officials, agents, soldiers, and warriors—Down the Warpath to the Cedars produces a complex picture, and a definitive account, of the Revolutionary War’s first Indian battles, an account that significantly expands our historical understanding of the northern theater of the American Revolution.
