Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of the Christian Church, From Its First Establishment to the Present Time: Containing a General View of Missions The rise, progress, establishment, corruption, and reformation of the Church, arc subjects of deep interest to mankind, and especially so to the friends of Christianity. But the voluminous works in which these subjects are exhibited, are to the great mass of community inaccessible. The want of moans to purchase, or of time to read them, has restricted their use to a comparatively small number of readers. Hence the spread of the gospel, and tho condition of the Church in different ages since the establishment of Christianity, are by many very imperfectly understood. The object of this work in its original form, as prepared by Dr. Gregory, was to furnish a comprehertsive abridgment of ecclesiastical history; and thus to place this important branch of knowledge within the reach of multitudes that could not obtain it from larger works. In revising and preparing it in its present form, the same object has been kept in view. The work might have been swelled to a size much beyond its present limits; but a general history of the Church in a small compass was deemed preferable, especially in view of the use that may be made of it by the young and rising generation. The history by Dr. Gregory does not extend to the close of the last century. Although this is compiled principally from that, it is extended to the present time; has numerous additions and improvements, and is enriched with a view of missions, and other subjects of moral enterprise, exhibiting the present condition and prospects of the Christian world. In this compendious form it is offered to the public, with the hope that it may be found, in some degree, useful in advancing the great interests of the Redeemer's kingdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Christian Church From Its First Establishment to the Present Century Mysterious are the degrees of God with respect to man; often slow in their operation, but always certain in their effect. Man had lost himself by sinning, God promised him a Redeemer, but a period of about four thousand years elapsed before that promise was fulfilled. Our first parents, Adam and Eve, were originally created in a state of innocence, and were finally designed by their bountiful Creator for the supernatural enjoyment of his glory in heaven. They had the garden of Eden, a paradise of earthly delights, allotted them for a temporary abode, till their translation into the heavenly mansions of everlasting bliss. They were endowed with free will, that they might have the merit of obeying and honouring their Creator by choice: for the merit of their obedience they had but one easy precept to observe, arid that was, to abstain from the fruit of a certain tree, under the penalty of death. Such was their primitive situation. A fallen angel, envious of their happiness, resolved to attempt their ruin. He entered the garden in a serpents form, addressed himself to Eve in a most artful manner, and by deceitful assurances at last persuaded her to eat the forbidden fruit. She prevailed on Adam to eat also. By this deliberate act of disobedience, they both incurred the penalty denounced against it: in vain did they try to shift the blame from one to another; they were driven out of paradise, loaded with shame and remorse, and condemned to drag out life in painful labour, till death should reduce their bodies into dust again, out of which they had been first formed. The gate of heaven was moreover shut against them, and against their whole posterity, until full atonement should be made for their transgression. Great was their affliction for the evil they had done; but God was pleased to comfort them with the promise, that the time would come when the woman's offspring should crush the serpent's head. Human nature being thus tainted with sin in its very root, a vicious race of mortals soon began to spring up and multiply. The corruption of their hearts and morals provoked the vengeance of an insulted Deity. God deluged the earth with one universal flood, and in the watery abyss buried every living creature that was not in Noah's Ark. Of all mankind only eight persons escaped destruction; these repeopled the earth with new inhabitants, not better than the former. In the space of a single century their progeny became too numerous for the spot the inhabited. Necessity compelled them to separate in quest of other settlements. For greater perspicuity, I remarked in the adver tisement, that I should divide the whole work into four pe r1ods. Considering the first (i mean the primitive ages) in its proper light: that is, as a source of virtue and science, and the basis of religion and piety, I shall endeavour to col lect some few of the treasures scattered in profusion, through the ancient monuments: I do not, however, mean to make particular mention, much less to give the analysis, of the voluminous writings with which the early ages abound. The most comprehensive work could scarcely do justice to so boundless an undertaking. Nor do I mean to interrupt the career of history by my own remarks: but to afford abundant matter to interest the attention, and awaken the re ections, of the reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of Christ: From Its Institution to the Sixteenth Century; In Which Are Traced the Rise and Progress of Its Corruption and Reformation The church was the subject, in the divine counsels of the everlasting covenant of Redemption. God Said, in the language of the inspired Psalmist - I have made a covenant with my cho sen; thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. I will make him my first born, higher than the kings of the earth. My covenant shall stand fast with him. The apostle of the Gentiles, in his epistle to the Ephesians, extols the spiritual blessings of God in Christ bestowed upon believers, ao cording as he had chosen them in him before the foundation of the world; and in the epistle to Timothy, he speaks of them as being saved, and called with a holy calling, not according to their works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given them in Christ Jesus before the world began. Upon this covenant of Redemption are founded all the merciful and providential dis plays of God's love towards his people. According to it he be stows his grace; and from it sprang the gospel of peace. A seed which should prolong his days - or the General Assembly and church of the first-born - was promised to Christ by this covenant as the condition of his 'propitiatory sacrifice for sin, (isaiah The existence of this invisible and catholic Church, and the salva tion of all believers through the dispensations of grace, are equally embraced by it.
