Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Chisholms: With Genealogies of the Principal, Families of the Name The History of the Chisholms, as given in this volume, is not an ambitious work. The materials are not extensive, and those available are not of an important or stirring character. I claim to have disposed of the absurd and groundless contention, so long maintained by the Northern clan, that they sprang originally from the Earls of Caithness and Orkney, and to have established, on the contrary, that they first came to the Highlands from the Scottish Borders, and that all the families of the name, north and south, can trace their descent to one common ancestor, heard of for the first time in Scotland in the county of Roxburgh towards the end of the thirteenth century. I am indebted to various friends for assistance, but above all others to Mr. Colin Chisholm, Namur Cottage, Inverness, whose interesting Traditions of Strathglass and genealogical storehouse I have freely and profitably drawn upon. Book excerpt: "James Chisholm was a staff writer For The Chicago Tribune sent to report on the gold strike made in the late 1860s at one of the great historical features of the continent?South Pass on the western trails. His journal, illustrated by himself, Is a graceful, observant narrative full of the real essence of frontier mining camp life."?Library Journal. "Chisholm had a lively sense of humor, An engaging frankness, and a fine eye for landscape. He was also a candid social critic."?Rocky Mountain News. "Lovers of the Old West will buy Chisholm's Journal and never part with it."?Pacific Historical Review. "If South Pass failed to produce gold in the paying quantities James Chisholm's miners thought it would, Chisholm himself produced finer, more lasting gold in his journal account of Wyoming's short-lived gold rush. His journal exudes the smell of sagebrush and scenic panoramas, Of torrential rain storms and night packing, Of being small in a big land, and of honest, earthy people who, In business-like fashion, went about the task of risking life, limb, health, and what small fortunes they had, To hit the big one. Chisholm sees with unpretentious eyes. His is an honest appraisal from a detached journalist, leavened with self-effacing humor. His prose is clean and clear. it can be read aloud and remembered."?Charles E. Rankin, editor of Montana the Magazine of Western History. Lola M. Homsher was director of the Wyoming State Archives and Historical Department.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work is the result of over thirty years of oral fieldwork among the last Gaels in Cape Breton, for whom piping fit unself-consciously into community life, as well as an exhaustive synthesis of Scottish archival and secondary sources. Reflecting the invaluable memories of now-deceased new world Gaelic lore-bearers, John Gibson shows that traditional community piping in both the old and new world Gàihealtachlan was, and for a long time remained, the same, exposing the distortions introduced by the tendency to interpret the written record from the perspective of modern, post-eighteenth-century bagpiping. Following up the argument in his previous book, Traditional Gaelic Bagpiping, 1745-1945, Gibson traces the shift from tradition to modernism in the old world through detailed genealogies, focusing on how the social function of the Scottish piper changed and step-dance piping progressively disappeared. Old and New World Highland Bagpiping will stir controversy and debate in the piping world while providing reminders of the value of oral history and the importance of describing cultural phenomena with great care and detail.
