Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of St. Luke's Hospital With a Description of the New Buildings The thought was conceived by Rev. William Augustus Muhlenberg, D.D., while rector of the Church of the Holy Communion. This thought was first expressed in an address to his own congregation on St. Luke's day, 1846, in which he named his ideal hospital St. Luke's, for the beloved physician, and devoted one-half the offertory, the sum Of $15, toward its erection. The spirit of the man is shown by his reply to a question asked of him that day: doc tor, When do you expect your hospital to be built? Never! Unless I begin. He was soon after encouraged by a gift of from Mrs. Lindley Hoffman, a member of the Church of the Holy Communion. Other large gifts followed from other parishioners. An Appeal for a Church Hospital was made, by request, in other parishes. The Doctor's enthusiasm, and the evident need Of the City, kindled the flame of Charity in other hearts, and Dr. Muhlenberg was soon surrounded by a noble band of fellow-workers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-Seventh Annual Report of St. Luke's Hospital, 1919 Under present conditions, without assistance, it will be impossible to maintain a free list of from thirty to forty per cent of our patients as well as about fifty per cent of the pay patients at rates which do not meet the full cost Of their care. It is of course wholly unnecessary to present arguments Or evidence as to the absolute need for the work which the Hospital does, in so far as its means will permit, and it ought to be unnecessary to do more than make known the imperative necessity for adequate support. To sum the whole matter up in a few words, to maintain our old standard we must have an income available for current expenses from services outside the earnings of the Institution of not? Less than per. Annum and further if the Hospital is to progress, a sum of not less than must be secured for new buildings and equipments. Book excerpt: Bethlem Hospital, popularly known as "Bedlam", is a unique institution. Now seven hundred and fifty years old, it has been continuously involved in the care of the mentally ill in London since at least the 1400s. As such it has a strong claim to be the oldest foundation in Europe with an unbroken history of sheltering and treating the mentally disturbed. During this time, Bethlem has transcended locality to become not only a national and international institution, but in many ways, a cultural and literary myth. The History of Bethlem is a scholarly history of this key establishment by distinguished authors, including Asa Briggs and Roy Porter. Based upon extensive research of the hospital's archives, the book looks at Bethlem's role within the caring institutions of London and Britain, and provides a long overdue re-evaluation of its place in the history of psychiatry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Luke's Hospital Annual Reports, 1954-1955 The Clark Building, opened on St. Luke's Day, October 18th, 1954, supplied the badly needed space for a new and modern out-patient Department. Its 34 clinics occupy the first two floors of the building and daily render a tremendous service to the Community. In 1955, the first full year of operation, it handled more clinic visits than it had in its old quarters. Equally busy are the diagnostic and therapeutic services on the third floor. The laboratories of the Pathology Department on the fourth floor and the special laboratories on the Penthouse floor now offer opportunities for clinical and pure research the Hospital has never had before. Modern and well-equipped space for patients of services already major in the Hospital, i.e., orthopedic, urological, and pediatric, are housed in the new building. The inauguration of a long-needed psychiatric service was also made possible. The establishment of the Columbia Health Service on the second floor of this building and its Infirmary on the ninth floor was also a natural and desirable development. It is not possible to think of the work of the three divisions of St. Luke's. Hospital - the General Hospital, Woman's Hospital Division, and the Convalescent Home - without paying tribute to its staffs: physicians and surgeons, nurses, technicians, administrators, medical social workers, and all of the hundreds who serve so faithfully and with such good will. Contributing freely and cheerfully to this service is a group of men and women who last year gave hours of volunteer work to St. Luke's.
