Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Earliest Accounts of That Nation, to the Reign of King James Vi.; To Which Is Annexed a Genealogy of All the Kings From Fergus I. To James Vi The regent and the chancellor did bewail the state of things, but they could not rectify it; so that the gangrene spread farther and farther, and soon infected all those parts of Scotland which lay within the Forth. And they themselves also disagreed, inso much that proclamations were publicly made in market towns and villages, by Alexander, that no man should pay obedience to the chancellor; and by the chancellor, that none should obey A lexander. And if a man addressed himself to ither of them, to complain of any wrongs, he was sure, at his rejurn, to meet with severe treatment from the men of the contrary faction; and mat ters were now and then carried with so high a hand, that the complainant had his house fired about his ears, and was ruined to all intents and purposes; so that both parties went beyond the length of hostile fury, in their mutual butcheries of one another. But the good nien, who had joined neither faction, not knowing well what to do, kept close at home, privately bewailing the de plqrable state of their country Thus, whilst eve1y party sought to strengthen itself, the public was neglected, and stood as it were in the midst, forsaken and abandoned by every body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time At the very outset of the proceedings, several difficulties arose which required some skill to smooth them down. In the first place, the duke of Norfolk, somewhat in discreetly, observed that the regent of Scotland, having consented to plead before Elizabeth, must begin by doing homage to the English crown. This proposal moved the indignation of the regent, and provoked an ironical retort from Lethington, who re presented that Scotland had been deprived of those appendages, namely, the counties of Northumberland and Cumberland, and the manor of Huntingdon, for which homage had been formerly paid. Mary's commissioners, on their side, were startled at the prelimi nary oath required of each party, to speak nothing but the truth and to conceal no thing which might be necessary for a just appreciation of the cause. All these matters however having been arranged, and the oaths taken, Mary's commissioners made a state ment of the charges against her subjects, as they had been directed in her instructions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Scotland From the Roman Occupation, Vol. 1 of 2 Among what are called general histories I have made most use of the well-known works of Mr W. F. Skene, Mr Hill Burton, Mr Freeman, Mr E. W. Robertson, and Mr Tytler. The last-named gentleman, by his research in docu ments then difficult of access, though now open to all in the immense collections of printed State Papers and Club publi cations, made a new epoch in Scottish history. Documents not fully accessible to him (such as the 'hamilton Papers' and parts of Mr Bain's valuable Calendars) are now pnelz'ci jnm's: indeed, save for some lucky accident, we are unlikely to find much early ms. Material beyond what is now edited or in editorial hands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historians of Scotland, Vol. 2 The earliest historians of a country are undoubtedly the most valuable, if, upon a fair critical trial of their agreement with the writers of the neighbouring countries, but more espe cially with the sure testimony of public records and charters still remaining, they appear to have made a faithful use of the works of preceding writers and of other vouchers extant in their times, most of which being now lost, they, as the earliest faithful Copiers of them, are entitled to our respect and grati tude for furnishing us with the only means of obtaining the knowledge of many of the transactions of past ages. Hence it evidently follows, that the truest and most essential service that can be done to the history of any nation, is to lay before. The public genuine editions of its most antient and authentic historical monuments, and of the works of those who first attempted its general history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author was invited to undertake this general Sketch of Scottish History in connection with a similar abridgment of English History by Sir James Mackin tosh, and a History of Ireland by Thomas Moore, Esquire. There are few literary persons who would not have been willing to incur much labor and risk of reputation for the privilege of publishing in such society. On the present occasion, the task, though perhaps still a rash one, was rendered more easy by the Author having so lately been employed on the volumes called Tales of a Grandfather, transferred from the History of Scotland, for the benefit of a young relation. Yet the object and tenor of these two works are extremely different. In the Tales taken from Scottish history, the author, throwing into the shade, or rather omitting all that could embarrass the under standing or tire the attention of his juvenile reader, was desirous only to lay before him what was best adapted to interest his imagination, and confining himself to facts, to postpone to a later period an investigation of the principles out of which those facts arose.
